Also something that wasn't noted but should be is that these tungsten lights draw far more power than LEDs. Make sure to measure out how much energy you're drawing and check that its appropriate for the circuit breakers.

Great video! When I saw your picture on Instagram, I thought the lights was fake and Photoshoped in 😂 100 Dollar is so cheap for lights. The only problem is that I don't have the space to store the lights and it gets real hot so I don't think it's ideal for my house. It sounds very scary that they can explode aswell. The lights would be perfect for a studio like your's because you have space to use and store them. I will not say that the LED lights to 200 Dollar is that bad as on 1:51 tho. I got a light kit of three for just 500 Dollar and the CRI and TLCI are 97+. Backing paper works great for diffusion, I have used it myself for years. I also use aluminum (for baking) to shape the light. Don''t you have something similar? Is it called cinefoil and it is black and stiffer? I have made a LED light that I use for everything. It's just a work lamp (LED) so THAT is super green. I use aluminum foil around and baking paper in front and use gaffers tape to connect it all together. I use GELs in fornt of that so it works great and are super cheap. The only problem is that it's a pain to build and if someone craches into it, it will be destroyed and you will have to start all over again (my cat has destroyed it many times 😂)

Strands are great tungsten lights, I've used them on all levels of Hollywood features and TV frequently. A Ton of indy shoots as well. It'll take LED lighting a lot more fine tuning to get me away from tungsten hot lights. The quality is just better, more reliable, and easier to control.

That's definitely true. Tungsten is just amazing. Everyone's trying to go to LED since they're getting cheaper and are hell of a lot more efficient than tungsten, but we're going to have to wait another 5-10 years or even more for them to have great color rendering without being so expensive. Maybe that won't change, who knows?

It’s true, that is the reason i bought a Leonardo desisti 2k fresnel last year, the thing is it’s so big and heavy that it requires a big car for me to take it on location (because i have a fair amount of gear to take and 1 light isn’t nearly enough) and it’s heavy it also makes the place extremely hot etc, Basically, i am now looking to invest 800€ in a aputure cob 120 markII, way more usable i think ( even if it’s just for the fact that i can actually a softbox without burning the place down on that thing...amazing

Other good brands for these kind of lights include CCT and selecon. Also make sure you use proper heat resistant gels for these or they can lose their colour very quickly. Also a lot of the plugs that come with these are designed for dimmer packs so they may need replacing. These are still really good lights and great video showcasing them

How refreshing. Im a big fan of Fresnel incandescent lights. I bought 5x 2K Ex BBC Lee Strand £250 and 2x 5K Ex BBC Lee Strand ten years ago and many others since. Also purchased yesterday second hand Lowel 3 point lighting kit complete with Tota and 2x Omni-Lights, stands etc etc £100. Shockingly Ive had second camera ops make sarcastic comments about the Lee Strand lights. What he failed to realise that a couple of the 2K were deliberately in shot for a Dragons Den type shoot for Sony BMG, the Strands were perfect as a practical being all black, rather than say Arri or LED lights. Using these as practicals, music videos, is perfect and popular at one time. All the lights are so well made and have and will last for years and have tremendous scope. I know directors that bought cheap Chinese lights, and the just fail. They are a fire and electrical hazard and most went up in smoke. Bin the Chinese bulbs too. In addition I adapted 4 photography soft boxes from 2m to 40cm various shapes with Bowens speed rings that fit over some of the lights above. Ive used LED lights for many productions over the years, but the throw just seems short, multiple shadows, lack of control from spot to wide etc. weird strobing on CMOS cameras. It can be risky and we've been caught out before, so we stuck with Incandescent lamps, they JUST WORK, so essential on a shoot. Just think photometries, if you're a Cinematographer, you'll know what I mean. Also the colour balance on LED lights vary, when they start to fail they are expensive or disposable, not always very robust, still evolving and can become obsolete (out of fashion) as the technology evolves. LEDs have their place. Think of it as WATTS per buck or pound, and ease maintenance. Good spot Jordy

To me I like to view everything as a tool at my disposal. I do not understand this replacement mindset that many have with replacing tungsten with LED. Why not just welcome LED into the family and allow them to do what they're good at and allow tungsten to do what they're good at. Artistically it's freeing to look at all the tools rather than just limiting myself to only one type of course. All have a place within the family of lighting.

Hey, I love your channel but you can’t compare tungsten to leds. The advantages of leds over tungsten are: - they can have a full range of color temperatures and rgb colors, and have a true white - they don’t heat up as easily so aren’t as much afire hazard - they pull 3x less power for up to 5x more luminance The green tint you see on the cheap vs expensive led comparison is mainly due to the CRI level. (Basically above 80cri is decent to good light) I’ve found cheap leds with great quality because they were above 80cri. I love tungsten lights but they don’t have the same use as leds. But yes they are definitely cheaper. All I’m saying is if you’re getting a tungsten to avoid paying for expensive leds you have to keep a few things in mind (your power circuit max output, what’s its use, and how you’re going to handle the heat)

Hey Cinecom! I am a hobby filmmaker and want to buy a light now. I have a cheap LED panel. But as you say: It is not the best. I am searching for a versatile light for all kinds. I especially like to make short films. It should work well as a nice key light. Do you think I should buy the tungsten Fresnel light and put a CTB in front of it or do you think I should look for another one like a good LED panel? My budged goes up to 200€ Thank you for your help! Great Video as always! Loved it

LED definately has more technology to it and its just nicer to work with. But for around $200, it's hard to find quality LED. Aputure, Ikan, Zylight, f&v,.. are all good brands for a relative cheap price. The tunsten lights mentioned are bulky, drain a lot of power and get hot. But the quality of the light is perfect. LED's can be used more easily to rig in a car, outside or quicky light something out of your hands. So it all depends on the needs 🙂
