I mean, to be fair, since the story takes place post-rapture, you can either have an all white cast or have some characters left behind be POC. Sort of like how people complained how the Handmaid’s Tale made Gilead less white supremacist because some handmaid’s were women of color. The alternative is to have an all white cast, and is that…really what we want?

I was thinking this the WHOLE time! Like, all she was doing was acting like a normal teen the entire series (poorly acting as in professional acting, though, but still...) Sure, teens are old enough to make some decisions rationally, but it is also mixed in with all the awkwardness of just growing up. But PureFlix wants us to believe that refusing to go to bed at a certain time will damn us to Hell for all eternity? Then all teens would be doomed in this scenario.

They don’t just condemn them for eternity, they dangle threats of assault in front of them like with this PUREFLIX ‘masterpiece’ as if it’s some sort of “punishment”. @@shelbythisisaresidentialar5397 this depends on the belief system. Some forms of Christainity believe that if you just declare you believe in God, you have an automatic ticket to Heaven regardless of what you do afterwards. Others believe you have to work towards living a good life, practicing the commandments and virtues to gain Heaven. As for forgiveness, no, that is not automatic either. I want to clarify as an ex evangelical that Christians don’t “love everyone.” An evangelical will say with their mf CHEST that loving doesn’t mean you have to accept or like someone. This gives them room to be racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist (basically a republican). Their “love” for the “sinners” boils down to forcing their religion down other peoples throats so that they get more brownie points from god (basically more riches in heaven).

The disconnect comes from the definition of love losing its original meaning. That word doesn’t mean what it used to anymore. Real love means supporting what some needs versus what they want. I can want to eat candy til my teeth fall out. But I sure hope someone would love me enough to tell me I don’t need to do that. Similarly many things have consequences that aren’t always easily seen. People who have more experience and have seen more just know sometimes how things will work out. Unfortunately this is not always the case. And people heavily take advantage of that sometimes. It’s very disheartening. This is due to free will. I’m thankful for leadership I can trust in my life that help with direction.

I feel like the answer to a bunch of Nick’s questions about “if this is made for teens, why…” is that I don’t think this is made for teens. I think it’s made for parents to force teens to watch. It’s made for a pureflix audience, AKA parents who are too controlling to let their kids watch real Netflix, parents to whom slamming a door and refusing to go to church is considered disrespectful enough to warrant being Left Behind in the rapture. This show is for petty, narcissistic manipulation of children. The message is “because you made this gesture of independence, this is what I think you deserve, these are the consequences you should suffer.” There are a lot of interesting interpretations of the Rapture, but this one feels specifically geared towards manipulating your children. Anybody who grew up in a restrictive religious household or studies systems of control feel free to chime in, I could totally be wrong but the sense I get is that this is a really innocuous but really insidious form of behavior control.
@juniperr262

You're absolutely right, not only because of the way the parents behave, but because a child or teenager would not willingly watch this and essentially traumatize themselves into thinking they need to be absolutely perfect. Another example is God Is Not Dead, which is a movie Nick has also made a video on. When I was young, my mother forced me to go to the movies and watch it. I'm now 22 years old and I still remember the absolute sense of discomfort it brought me when I was literally 14 years old.

This is 100% accurate. Christian Fundamentalists Homeschooler survivor here. My “parents” believed most everyone, even ‘very Christian’ Christians were going to hell, often over little stuff. For instance, holding hands before marriage might not be a ‘sin’ but it made you “dirty.” I lived in constant fear of the Rapture my entire childhood until 17 or 18. More times than I care to count, I started packing supplies and getting ready for the coming rape and looting and burning of the Rapture before my “parents” returned home from a surprise shopping trip they didn’t care to tell me about beforehand. Nobody answering calls? No one in the house in the morning? The neighborhood is too quiet while walking the dog? Parents said they’d be home three hours ago and arent answering their phone? I was 10 losing my shit, getting ready for Armageddon. I was convinced that no matter what I did or how much I “loved” God, I was destined for hell. Tbh, I still think about it and feel the pang of fear run through me before I remember I’d rather burn in hellfire than be the type of person I was told makes it to heaven.

I look at that scene and I see three things a Christian won't see. Regretful reverence for life, loyalty to a loved one in scarcity and compassion. He's evidently there seemingly (genuinely, as far as the bad acting can say) just to get food for his family, he's clearly using the gun for protection against whoever might be home, when he realizes it's just a kid, even though she's armed and could be a threat to him still, he leaves and borderline apologizes. He's stealing in scarcity and possibly harming her chances to survive, but if it's his family versus her, the choice is obvious yet He still cares. A Christian would see depravity. (For the sake of this movie's world building being crap and it being a dream, we're gonna say the store didn't exist until she needed it for her dream to make sense to her.) Essentially, we get what she really thinks of atheists and non-Christians peaking through in the midst of her indoctrination.

So one thing about the robbery scene: Leaving your finger on the trigger when you don't want to shoot a gun is a very good way to accidentally put a hole in a 15 year old. He is actually holding the gun the way he should be if he just wants to be threatening without hurting anybody. That doesn't make this show _not garbage_ it just makes this one character responsible.
@markk8248
@markk8248 2 жыл бұрын
He’s not supposed to be portrayed as responsible… he’s desperate and robbing someone’s house. Like he’s STILL pointing a gun in a child’s face and you’re calling him responsible for the way he’s pointing the gun at the kids head? 🤣🤣 Critiquing it this way also makes no sense when in reality there’s no bullets in the gun anyway. Get that finger on the trigger Mary!! Make me believe you’re all losing it and so desperate for food you’re willing to do anything to get it.
@ssharkbait

Nick’s point was it’s not threatening enough. This is supposed to be Hell on Earth, the danger and stakes need to be raised. A polite robbery scene where no real danger isn’t involved doesn’t portray that.

Nice surprise to find a responsible _(possibly even trained?)_ gun owner among fundie conservatives, but in this case since its supposed to be an immediate danger kind of scene it would've made sense movie-wise to have the finger on the trigger, safety being on of course. But then again, if Nick didn't point it out I probably wouldn't have noticed and neither would the target audience of this

The thing that gets me about all these shows and movies about the rapture is that it could be really narratively interesting. I'm an atheist, but there are still a lot of compelling stories that could be told with this premise. I'd highly recommend Nick covering the Left Behind movies (the Kirk Cameron originals, not the Nic Cage remake. The remake tones down the Christianness for broader appeal and is way less funny). Also Nick, looking gorge today :)

My childhood church was obsessed with the entire “Left Behind” book series. My mom read the entire series; I couldn’t even finish the first book. I remember my church bought out an entire showing of the original Kirk Cameron “Left Behind” movie one Sunday because they “wanted to send a message to Hollywood that Christian movies can also make money.” Years later “The Passion Of The Christ” came out and part of me is still mad my childhood church would willingly scar my like that.

I think the problem is that as atheists/agnostics we think the rapture is an interesting premise because we empathize with flawed _human_ characters, but the people who make rapture films want to demonize them for the same reasons. We can watch another person struggle and then make moral judgements of their actions and environment, while the self-righteous are primed to make moral judgements first and then watch *an “other” person* whose struggles are just confirmation. We pity those who meet misfortune because such things could befall us, while a dude who believes he’d be raptured would only pity them because they were inherently _less_ than him.

They should make an opposite movie to this where all the LGBTQIA+ people and “immoral” people get “raptured” to a fabulous party with an infinite open bar and never-ending performances from Lady GaGa and Britney Spears and they get to laugh at the “moral” people back down on earth that still have to work 9-5’s while they realize they’re all boring af without us 😂 “John the Christian business man thought the rapture would purge the earth of all the sinners but now he’s so bored without them that he, too, wants to be saved. He admits that he secretly agrees with pro choice arguments and that he might find other men attractive and asks for repentance. Cher (God) comes down from the sky and whisks him away to the best party of his life, forgiving him for being such a judgmental biatch during his time on earth”

It amazes me that SO MANY people get taken up in the rapture during these shows. Society would definitely not fall apart. I feel like I know maybe three people that seem like genuinely good Christians and most every other friend/family member is a good non-religious person. I would barely lose anyone plus the majority of the scientific and academic community is not religious. MAYBE MAYBE we'd lose like 1% of the global population. Most people and communities would most likely be entirely unaffected.

That's what I was thinking. I find it really odd in these movies that involve a rapture how life descends into utter world ending chaos, when there's nearly 8 billion people in world. I get if things get messed up for some number of days with people suddenly vanishing, especially if some of those people were driving; but I think anarchy would not be on the list of things happening.

I'm reminded of some shitty movie about the rapture i saw once where the SECOND it happened, all hell broke lose for no reason. People driving cars through shop windows, stealing and murdering in broad daylight. Like. What. Why. It's weird how often i see Christians genuinely talking about how they think atheists have no morals or empathy whatsoever. "But if they don't believe in god, what reason do they have to not just murder a child?" Because I'm not batshit, Linda. I'm more worried that this implies that YOU would murder a child if god wasn't threatening you at gunpoint.
