There are no silver bullets in the fight against climate change - but there are some blindingly obvious solutions that wouldn't hurt anybody. So... why aren't fossil fuel companies plugging their methane leaks?
Reporter: Ajit Niranjan

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our channel explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

A lot of grocery stores here switch or already switched to CO2 as refrigerant because it only has the effect of CO2 if it leaks, other refrigerants are a lot worse.

Whenever I watch videos like this my emotional thought pattern looks like this: Anxiety at discovering the scale of yet another major pollutant, followed by hope because solutions do exist, but that quickly turns to anger and despair because solutions have existed for a long time, but our politicians seem to lack the will to do anything about it. COP 'promises' are meaningless until they result in policy changes.

this entire video is a lie: 1) methane having an estimated mean half-life of 9.1 years in the atmosphere its not going to build up to anything worth worrying about, as it currently sits at 1892.2 ppb or 0.00018922% which is nothing and 2) man made climate change isn't real in the first place. how many times are you going to listen to them say the sky is falling. do you have any idea how long people have been trying to blame people for the weather. for god sake in the dark ages they burned witches because of bad weather.

We believe that since it can go unnoticed except for expensive detectors like yours and ours, they don't bother even though it could save them millions if captured. Your leak is for one person's convenience. A methane leak at a large gas plant is one that might serve 10's of thousands of consumers. methane leaked/person is not really any more significant than you leaving the lights on needlessly, if you allocate those emissions to consumers, and I think it's fair to at least give consumer some of the blame. Even if they didn't know about methane leaks, they can no longer plead ignorance on global warming.

A different point to make would be how to deal with the infrastructure from gas drills after all the gas has been harvested. Usually companies, will close the pipeline but will never go back to do any form of check back later down the line for damage. The metal can corrode and vent out gas later down the line. And companies are under no legal obligation to fix these and are unlikely to do so, themselves. Solution to fix this would be to fine companies at a fixed rate of Methane lost or how long the leak has occurred from.

methane is not scarier than CO2 at all in my mind. methane leaks are easy to address. Right in the video they explain that the tech exists. If you fix a leak today, the methane emitted is completely gone in 20-30 years. CO2 emissions on the other hand, has MUCH less obvious solutions, and it stays in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. Like all we have to replace combustion engines is EV, and those come with a bunch of environmental damage including some significant CO2 especially on the scale people want them ie billions of EVs.

I have studied atmospheric physics and have a PhD in chemistry. If you add 1 ppm of CO2 to an earth atmosphere devoid of GHGs you get a warming of nearly 6 W per sq m. Do the same with methane you get 2 W per sq m, one third of CO2. Methane is NOT a powerful GHG, you are being misled by people who are confused between the basic greenhouse effect and GWP , global warming potential. Concn of CO2 in atmos is 400 ppm, for CH4 it is less than 2 ppm (source of calculation is MODTRAN).

Climate change is driven by CO2 in the long run. I'm not sure how strategically wise it is to tackle methane emissions now. A quick but short-term (~20 years) spike in temperature may motivate us to tackle the CO2 problem faster.
@Kaepsele337
@Kaepsele337 2 жыл бұрын
That would rely on us cutting the methane emissions in 20 years. Why not do it now? Also we're far from equilibrium i.e. we're getting more heat from the sun than we're emitting back into space, meaning that the warming hasn't caught up to the concentration of greenhouse gases yet. This means that the methane creates warming that will not be reversible by just bringing the methane levels back down. All that a delay in this does is to cost us time in mitigating climate change.
