Our hierarchy of needs isn’t a pyramid. It’s this.

Self-actualization is about finding your unique strengths and gifts and applying them to the world around you, for a fulfilling and purposeful life. The idea of self-actualization was first popularized by Abraham Maslow, who developed his Hierarchy of Needs theory in the 1970s. But modern cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman challenges that iconic ‘pyramid’ of needs, by proposing a new model that reflects our modern world.
Scott's own struggles, including an auditory processing disorder, led him to understand that traditional measures of intelligence, like IQ tests, don't capture the full potential of individuals. To better represent the self-actualization journey, Scott proposes a sailboat model: the boat's stability represents safety, connection, and self-esteem, and the sail represents exploration, purpose, and transcendence.
Unlike the linear pyramid, the sailboat model reflects integration of all needs, changing narratives, and creating new meanings. For Scott, and Stand Together, the ongoing journey of self-actualization involves helping others on their unique journeys, recognizing that what is good for individuals can create a thriving society.

What do you think of the sailboat model of self-actualization?

The language and sailboat model appeals to me. I learned about Maslow in college, decades ago😂 so I appreciate your research, thinking, and the way you developed it throughout this engaging video. I’m curious for more on safety and what that means, though I know you included it - that’s where I’d like to hear more on this idea from you, as I am on board (no pun intended!) with your model. More please!

Decades old Maslow's Triangle is undoubtedly a great frame work. This gives us an idea to work on it. Infact in easternd world, some, directly live on the top actualisation, without climbing the scaffolding.

Thanks. We learned about the pyramid in school and I always thought it was weird and not very accurate.

Re: 0:11 just like Millennials and Zs can’t fake smoking well… this isn’t at all how we used to blow in to video game cartridges. Not sure how to say this with out sounding like a “that’s what she said” joke-but you would blow hard, and back and forth several times like you were expressing frustration… because you were. Then you wouldn’t put the game back in gently, it would be aggressively and you would turn on the power quickly.

merely a subjective and semi-abstract sharing surrounding an unremarkably informal opening, yet the source of your fixated semantical criticisms -- considering the cohesive discussion they're trying instead to stimulate. Your stream of consciousness is interesting, but on an irrelevant minor facet..most evident when scaled by purpose and function against the larger concept and equally or grander linguistic off-comments / schematics included in the video's deconstructed proposed of this alternate revision.

@@TwanBankz well, I used to strive for a scientific discovery, but now decided to instead focus more on helping people, not just a few people by donating money to the homeless, anybody can do that, but it means nothing if they'll end up not much better in the end, you can't help everybody by just throwing money at them, you'd need to get it from somewhere, so the only true way is to challenge the status quo, it's a gable, but then again, everything is, and the world is running out of time, I knew I could do a lot, but now I know where I must focus... Sorry I'm ranting again.

Not all of us can think abstractly enough to grasp this sailboat thing. Nor do I understand how sailboats actually work - I don’t think I’m east coast bourgeoisie enough for that one. I’ll stick w the pyramid. The basic geometric shape works better for me - like the simpleton I apparently am. And yet, and I am comfortable w that. He can keep his sailboat.
