This November, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will both be four years old, which means both consoles are a little bit past the halfway point in their lifecycles, which is absolutely nuts to think about, because the both current-gen platforms barely have anything to show for their four years of existence so far.
Usually when a console is entering its fourth year, it has well and truly hit its stride, following up on consistent past support with a steady string of new releases to build up a healthy library of games that cannot be played on previous generation consoles. That, however, has very much not been the case with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S so far. Here, we talk about all of that and more.

This is the absolute best time in history to be a backlog gamer. Physical and digital sales make it so easy to catch up on anything you missed. New releases are expensive and ship unfinished. Enjoy your library and save so much money instead.

fantastic point.. I personally have enjoyed the cycle of gaming.. and then when it comes to the backlog, thats absolute facts.. Im focusing on Elden Ring now loll but alongside that, im playing Kingdom Hearts 3, Nier Automata, Doom Eternal etc alot of older games. backlog is insane

Totally agree. I was in a relationship for the last 12 years just collecting games. Now that I'm single I have to go back and beat RDR2, The Witcher 3, CP2077, and learn if I have what it takes to be From Software games.

don't forget that nobody could get a console for multiple years unless it was from scalpers for around $1 ,000. Both Amazon and Wall-Mart had no problem helping squeeze us for every cent they could.

I just turned 40 got my Nintendo at 5. I've noticed the slow burn of regressing quality over the last 10 years. There's just too much money being spent to give the gaming industry a wake up call

The problem with some games taking 6-7 years to develop these days is by the time they are released they are on outdated engines and not taking advantage of the latest hardware. Then you had games clinging onto previous gen consoles when they were not at all capable for it like Cyberpunk selling to PS4/Xbox One. That should have only been released for the PS5/Xbox Series.

No. Cyberpunk was announced before ps4/xbx1 were even announced and was in development starting in 2016. CDPR just messed up. The only reason people say it should have been ps5 were because the delays. It was originally due out in 2019, a whole year before ps5. So tired of cyberpunk defenders blaming old gen consoles instead of the developers

Cyberpunk came out a few years ago. It makes no business sense to only make a game for two consoles most people can't even buy because they can't make enough of them. And they worked on the game a few years before it came out.

Scalpers had a hand in this. Way less people were able to purchase due to scalpers. And by the time there were enough consoles to buy through normal means, people (like me) said F it. I don't need a console.

There weren't that many scalpers though. When the new consoles came out there were major chip shortages around the world. That was a big problem for a lot of people.

I got my PS5 last year and honestly I've gotten more out of my PS5 as a 4K blu ray player. I've also been playing older games for the most part just because they're more entertaining to me

Exactly. The PS5 is probably my favorite console ever, besides the library of the PS2. Since the PS5 plays every PS4 game but better and faster, I don't regret buying it for one second. Besides, the PS5 controller is absolutely amazing. Feels great to play.

But if games are on a cartridge, load times are no longer an issue. Cartridges/Memory cards are cheap as chips nowadays.

@@AHeroInHell on a SSD there is 1 second of wait time cartridge life span in shorter but is better then a download ppl with Sega cartridge deal with many factors worst then a loading time but PlayStation uses a digital code that needs to be updated from time to time. Both are good and bad in they own way.

The biggest problem with the gaming industry is that graphics require far too much money and time to be created, resulting in very few games being released. What was Nintendo saying since the Wii era. graphics will be the Downfall for gaming and gameplay is much more important. And now the Switch has more than 90 first party games, that speaks for itself

graphics are important nothing stays the same forever. game play is important but you cannot just ignore graphics either. that being said game play is more important.also their is a reason remakes are popular its because remakes are a way to get a new experience like with dragon quest 3 2d remake that square is coming out with.

@@supersaiyaman11589 Most games nowadays have great graphics but not a great art style. Nintendo's franchises either have a cartoony art style or an anime art style. So even with the weak power of the Switch, their games still look great while they are super cheap and take very little time to be made. You can see this in recent games such as M&L brothership and Zelda echoes of wisdom. And that is why games such as Persona 5 have a perfect port on Switch.

Nintendo is just cheap and lazy when it comes to graphical power. They have no problem charging full price for their games but will stay behind the eight ball hardware wise.

Right? It's like all gaming KZfaqrs forget a pandemic delayed development of absolutely everything for multiple years at the beginning of their lifecycle. You couldn't get your hands on one of these for over 2 years because of chip shortages. There's a reason Nintendo's Switch is still viable even though its hardware is 10 years outdated. If anything, they probably should've delayed release on these a few more years but alas, this is reality.

@@lammyjammer6670chip shortage was not the reason no one could find one. It was all the scalpers and bots buying them all up and then trying to sell them for outrageous prices. It took me 2 years to find a ps5 and I got mine from a third party reseller from Walmart and still had to pay 1200 dollars for it.

It's looking like this holiday season they have more releases lined up than Sony does for once.

Games take 5-7 years to develop now and these companies want to put out new consoles every 10. It’s just not sustainable.

Exactly . You could potentially play a story driven game left on a cliff hanger for part 2 and then have to pay another 500-600 on a new console to experience part 2. It’s like when things like elder scrolls 6 was announced like will it even release on this generation doubt it very much . Ps2 has gta 3/vice city and San Andreas - which people probably had more fun with these than majority of games these days .

That's the way I feel. The games look good but they are so shallow. I thought battle systems would have gotten more complex and amazing but they are being dumbed down. Also everything feels and looks the same. It's all the same type of game just a different coat of paint.

This was the one and only consoles generation I totally skipped, and my first console was (mind you) a Sega Master System. I am fine with my PC & "previous gen" consoles, and never felt a reason to get a PS5 or an X. Never happened to me before, in 30 years of gaming.

That's pretty much my story, too - started with an Atari, stopped with a PS4. There's only a scant handful of console exclusives that never make it to PC, and with so many other great games out there, I don't really miss them. I'm still glad that I own all the consoles I already have, but now that PC gaming has gotten so accessible, investing in another one doesn't seem anywhere near as necessary as it used to.

Exactly like me. I also started with the Sega Master System and never missed a console including all previous Playstations. And just like you I jabe not yet felt an extreme need to get a PS 5. So far I am still waiting for some awesome games that will want me to soend my hard earned cash. My plan was to wait for the Pro version. But let’s see about the games first. If nothing major happens maybe I’ ll end up skipping this current generation after all. I do think thought we are about 2 years behind schedule in terms of games development because of Covid. Let’s see what the future brings. Maybe now there are starting to kick in.

The most probable reason is that the PC/ Console technology is advancing faster than the human game developers can make new games. Developing games for new gen hardware is more difficult and takes a lot of time.

The main problem is business types that took over and focus on profit over quality, and with their greed they raise prices and rush things to keep that ever increasing income flowing and so not enough time is given to making things properly (or to the right things in general). Consoles were meant to be the cheaper alternative to computer games but now they match the price when you add up all the costs at the end of a consoles generation. Games once made by gamers for gamers are now made by uninterested/not invested workers for investors interests.

I don't see why just because we have better hardware they always have to push the limits cinematic wise but keep it safe and non experimental gameplay wise. Very non forward thinking. Feels like I'm watching a movie then playing a video game. And the industry and fan boys will use that as a scapegoat to charge more money for the same stale ass games.

I beg to differ, what was the most disappointing thing about this generation was the media coverage. The media coverage was primarily about the console war rather than the games. Nothing about this generation was fair or balanced all the media did was cover and fueled the flames of the console war. The ps5 has sold over 50 million consoles and the most they can do is money hat for timed exclusive while Xbox has sold over 20 million consoles and bought activision blizzard. That should tell yall that yall not doing your mother🤬n job.

I believe part of the problem with this generation of consoles is that Microsoft made a lesser version of the Xbox which handcuffed many game makers because they were not able to make the games for the elite hardware only. Therefore they had to dumb the games down for the Xbox S or whatever it was called. Quit making less capable machines, if people can't afford the extra hundred dollars then they can't afford gaming.

How much did you think upgrading to 16 gb of ddr5, a zen 2 cpu, and a ssd was going to cost? I think $500 for these systems was perfectly reasonable at launch. Should they be cheaper now? Yes, but they just go to their standard excuse of "teh pandemicz!" regarding that. But that's across the entire corporate spectrum.

I’m not surprised considering that we had to deal with a big massive Pandamic and let’s face it we still haven’t fully recovered. Plus the cost of living crisis that’s affecting every country is making a lot of people stick with last GEN consoles and not upgrading to new ones, which is why we’re constantly seeing cross generational games still coming out. This console generation has been slow and I’m not going to deny that but we have also have had some bangers. Horizon forbidden west, god of war Ragnarok, hades, returnal, ratchet and clank rift apart, marvel midnight suns, soulstice, chorus, shadow gambit the cursed crew, remnant2, Hogwarts legacy, hot wheels unleashed and unleashed 2 and stellar blade are all the ps5 games I have got so far. That’s still more games I have played on ps5 then what I had on ps4. While this console generation has been slow, I’m still happy about the games I have been able to play so far. I can’t wait to see what else comes out.

This is the first generation since before the Atari 2600 in which I (or my parents) have bought no consoles. I'm still playing Switch and PS4 with no desire to upgrade to anything newer.

We can't stress the fact that the offer was not meant to transition from the previous gen to the current one. Developers wanted to sell games and the current gen sales took off very slowly, which led to development cycles planning for last gen since 2020 all the way to 2022.

I feel like people really dont appreciate how much better a lot of these cross generation releases play on the ps5. Not only is the controller a huge upgrade, but all these games run so much better. I dont see anything wrong with giving people the option to have a better experience, but for some people its not worth it so they can stick with the ps4 / xbox one.

I think it’s what your standards are and if you think it justifies the cost. Because while i agree the boost in performance makes a big difference, it’s fair to say we should have higher standards to motivate companies to do more. When paying $500 to upgrade to a new system, the boost in performance for some people should be a given and expected. That’s the case for most previous gen upgrades where we got a boost in performance and visuals IN ADDITION to many new quality games. This time around there’s the boost in performance but the visuals are improved but honestly it’s less of a leap than previous upgrades, which does make sense because as technology gets more advanced it becomes more difficult to see the difference graphically. I guess my point is, if someone told me to buy a brand new system for $500 just to play old games that will perform much better, I’d say that is awesome but not fully worth $500. If it was around $300, then maybe. Now I know it’s not that black and white so I’m not implying the PS5 should be $300 because there has been some good titles that’s been released, but this is just my overall opinion.

As someone who enjoys the PS5 religiously, I do agree that these 9th gen consoles aren't getting the love that they deserve. I can't believe it's taking near the late stages of their console life just to drop games that don't suck up to 8th gen. I'm not buying a PS6 or newest Xbox until 9th gen gets a huge lineup of games to play years on end.

I dont feel compelled to choose sides since I own both but I find it weird how ps gets lumped in with xbox as far as the "no games" argument. Xbox has bareky dropped an exclusive since the 360 and pretty much all of them were garbage. Even with the few ps remakes, even with ms monopolizing studios, sony still drops better games and more frequently. My series x is literally just an occasional gamepass machine that plays the MC collection. How xbox gets any praise while ps gets dragged through the mud regularly is beyond me.

I have the financial capability to purchase a current gen console. The shortage of consoles, gimmicks by sellers, and scalpers during the 1st couple of years turned me off and lessened my interest. Later on, realized that I may not need to get a current gen console. I've allotted my dough and time to other hobbies. Let's see in a couple of years.

same lol. I bought a nice ryzen/rtx 3060 laptop and am enjoying Steam. My PS5 is collecting dust. There's been a few hits for me like cyberpunk or horizon fw. When the new college football game comes out, that may be the most I've touched my PS5 since I bought it.

I mean unless all their studio's burn to the ground that bar will be cleared easily. There's a possibility that we'll have a 3d Mario, Metroid 4, and Pokemon Legends ZA as launch titles depending on when the switch 2 releases, and that's just the stuff we know about.

This generation was essentially just PS4 and Xbox One games but in 4k 60. Hoping next generation brings some actual advancements. The difference between my PS4 Pro and PS5 is definitely one of the smallest console leaps ever. Plus it doesn't help either that practically all games are still coming out on this gen and previous gen. I am slightly worried we've hit a plateau as a whole with video games. Plus developers are trying way to hard to make each game last for years and years but in reality its just making them bland and boring. So many games are built with so much aimless filler now.

It's hard to realize a level of graphics on current gen hardware that can't easily be downgraded for a last gen release too. So it is tempting for companies to want to do cross-gen to maximize sales.

I really do think this is due to the pandemic. Think about it. The consoles came out in 2020 the year the pandemic started. Most if not all companies like game development companies suffered greatly due to remote work. And I know many people of a variety of positions within their respective companies and they all pretty much said that having people work remotely greatly impacted their projects. So for 2-3 years, game development came to a slow crawl, this is why we’re seeing 2025 being filled with awesome games. Because these are games that have been in development either since 2023 or since the pandemic but were greatly delayed due to the pandemic.

The is the remake, backwards compatibility generation with more fps and HDR. Covid destroyed this Generation. I hope they extend the life cycle of PS5 series x because this gen has barely started. The switch was the true star of this generation. Nintendo never lost focus and kept releasing big hits despite covid.

I consider Switch 8th gen, which still makes sony and Microsoft look really bad because neither of their new consoles can catch it AND Nintendo's about to release their new one. Bottom line they screwed up hard this generation, I really really hope they or at least Sony get's humbled soon because I do love the Playstation just as much as Nintendo. But I'm very aware of Sony's bad habits so we'll just have to wait and see.

third party dev are much more interested on last or cross gen console because of install base, unless Sony and Microsoft subsidized the cost of making games.

Great video, very well made, but I have to say you lost me at "2023 was a great year in terms of new releases." Most modern games are nothing but ESG-infested interactive movies, with repetitive gameplay, a hyperfocus on graphics (as opposed to fun), ugly character designs, and pretty much nothing truly original. Personally, I have an Xbox One and haven't really bothered to upgrade to the Xbox Series S/X or the PS5. I'm mostly playing last-gen titles and indie sim games on my recently-built PC lately. Judging from the comments, it looks like a lot of people are doing pretty much the same.

The main issue I see and I'll keep saying it, Sony and Microsoft rushed out their next gen consoles at the worst possible time to do so. There's a reason Nintendo did'nt do the same and ended up massively benefiting from it, if they had decided to wai too. I don't believe they would be having all these problems now, but they did and here we have the results. And the insane part is that both Sony and Microsoft should already know better because of the Ps3 and Xbox 360 era, their in almost the exact same situation now only it's lasting longer and Nintendo won't be slowing down anytime soon because they actually have learned from the past.

An 8-year lifecycle is too short considering how long it takes to develop modern AAA games. They should bump that up to at least 10 years. But the greedy corpos will keep crunching and laying off their developers.

My ps4 was definitely on its last legs and I didn’t get a pro, so my ps5 has gotten plenty of use. Still have a huge backlog anyway. I love how quiet it is and I absolutely prefer 60fps in everything I play now. Hoping this gen lasts longer as it’s not even close to showing the best it can bring.

The ps5 has no better graphics then the ps4 and the Xbox one x has no better graphics then the Xbox one. The only good thing about the Xbox One x is that some games can run at 120 fps. Other than that nothing about these new consoles is out of this world.

Perfectly great 1440p consoles. If only devlopers focused on that goal. But you have to contend with 4k and nvidias ray tracing hustle. Sad this current gen is.

Developers won't drop the previous consoles so quickly as there is already a big established user base. It took a long time for current consoles to establish itself due to the pandemic which resulted in a shortage of console deliveries. It was a business/profit decision to cling onto previous gen for longer. Black Myth: Wukong will be the first true current gen game.

What would make that the first "true current gen game"? Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Rise of the Rōnin, Astro's Playroom, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, etc.. were also only on current gen hardware. It's also not like God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West don't look "current gen", probably even more so than many other current gen only games.

I never bought a console last generation. I got a Series S and PS5 last year. You could finally go to a store and buy them. That took forever. I mainly just played on Steam or my old PS3 games. Now I can play all of the old PS4 games and the PS5 games.

Gamers want GAMES, not interactive movies. The reason PS4 is doing so well is because it has decent graphics, is very reasonably priced, and mainly, the GAMEPLAY. The big 3 (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony) should switch from console generations to console model/versions. This way, gamers can stick with one console, and upgrade models when they want to and are able to.

The games became giant productions with a cast of thousands, the end credits take longer than most movies. also they spent a good portion of the generation trying to catch up on actually delivering consoles. And because of that a lot more cross gen games, yay

So much potential yet to be be fulfilled by developers to create new PS5 games that take full advantage of the new consoles. It's been mostly prior gen games with a 4K/60 fps sheen going on 5 years in as of 2024.

There are many many new games that cant play on the ps4 but do on a ps5 . 155 ps4 games so far have the free 4k/60 patch now like Mass Effect and Witcher 3 all with fast ssd load times. Try and play Alan Wake 2 ,BDG3 and Jedi Survivor on a PS4 . The Ps5 is leaps ahead of a Ps4 .

Aside from the chip shortage, the MAIN reason why this is happening is because people during the COVID lockdowns preferred online shopping because they 'thought' it was convenient and the way of the future. Well now post-lockdowns, people STILL preferred online shopping, thereby disadvantaging people who will ALWAYS prefer going down to a physical retailer to purchase a console, but can't either due to the loss of business due to the lockdown OR people not bothering to go down to a physical retailer post-lockdown again, because they 'think' that online is the future and putting everyday people out of work. That after all IS the reason that games are still being made for last gen as well as this gen. That and also the reason that there are STILL people that don't want to move to 4K.

This was a weird console generation with covid, scalpers, and people just not being able to buy a new console. This lead developers to making cross gen games just to try and make profit. Look at what sony done to square enix, got exclusive deals with ps5 only and both major games are saying sales didnt meet expectations.

I bought a Xbox series X last year, I’ll be honest I only got it so I can play my Xbox 360 games on 60 FPS upscaled. I have a PS2 and PS3, used to have a PS4 but the only time I thought about getting a PS5 was when I nearly FOMOed for Final fantasy 7 rebirth. Soon as I heard about PS exclusive coming to PC I dropped that thought so fast.

You have stated the obvious without analyzing the root cause. Hear me out. New hardware is mostly an attempt to stay relevant among gamers. PS5 was launched when PC hardware had already advanced by a great margin compared to the 'then current gen' consoles mainly PS4 and One. It is always in the best interest of the platform holder to stick to large userbase they have spent millions in marketing to acquire. Then why make a new console?? Also we all know that console business is based on Razor and stick model where consoles are sold at a loss or at break even under a best case scenario and all the money is made from selling games and subscriptions. The only incentive left for a platform holder to release a hardware then comes down to maintain the interest of users. This is partly also the reason we see slim and pro versions. Coming back to the current gen I think these consoles will have the longest lives comparatively due to the fact that support for last gen is still going strong and that the first few years of this gen software development was slowed down by lock downs..

I hate to admit it, but this is 100% true. I am not by any means. A PC Master race chud. I have a powerful PC but I never built it with the intention of it replacing my PlayStation. That said, between the lack of exclusives for the PlayStation 5 and the advent of the steam deck, I found myself barely ever using my PlayStation 5 anymore. To be fair, some of this has to do also with my taste in gaming changing over the years. I'm not an action game player. I'm not really a fighter game player. I don't really play sports games nor do I play first person shooters generally anymore. Most of the games I play now are RPGs, crpgs, rts, tactical games, and management games like oxygen not included. And those games tend to just play better on keyboard and mouse. Sorry if this comment looks a little weird or there's bad punctuation, I'm using voice to text.

It was mistake releasing the console during covid . Nothing was ready - yet both Sony/Microsoft dare not release to give the other a upper hand . They should have both agreed to hold off in an agreement for a extra year or two . Maybe then people would have been happy to games Release on next gen only . Maybe halo wouldn’t have been a mess , maybe miles morales could have been longer ? Majority of people are still stuck on last gen and rightfully so - other than minor graphically improvement and the FPS boost ( only really relevant in shooters/racing fast paced games ) where’s the benefit ? I mean the casual cod /fifa players are still Able to play on last gen - even black ops 6 in 2024 will release on them : 11 years after there release 😮

The issue is that COVID really has killed so many things. Even if the shutdown only lasted one year, you had the aftereffects of that hitting businesses to this day. That changes the way games are made, it changes how many people buy games, and that has to be factored in here. Imo it's very difficult to ignore the macroeconomic factors at play since the consoles launched.

Depending on how aggressively GPU manufacturers pursue the AI / big data sector -- bear in mind there was much less interest in this when the PS5 and Series X|S were being developed -- it's entirely possible we'll see console generations last longer as they attempt to get more out of aging hardware.

So true. There are many great AAA games, many great AA games also. But if you want to impress 8th gen console user with something really next-gen, there is nothing really that you can show him. My only next gen experience was Ratchet on PS5. Or chopping limbs in Dead Island 2, or best ever human like characters in Callisto Protocol - but yes, you can play those two games on 8th gen also. 4K 60fps in not next gen. Just wasting of computing power.

Maybe for exclusives, sure. But since this year started ive played Granblue Fantasy Relink, Persona 3 Reloaded, Final Fantasy 7, Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade, FF16 DLC, and now Elden Ring DLC. It’s an amazing time to be a gamer.

I own both and found the PS5 to be better in the beginning, but ultimately I have found this generation to be a let down. Sony and Microsoft are busy buying up dev companies and most of them don’t actually use the features very well. The fact that the PS5 controller saw the most use from a free mini game released with the console. It shows a lack of originality and shareholders wanting by the numbers games to generate cash for them instead of innovating and creating something truly special. Cross gen also holds back new gen hardware and this needs to stop. My XBox Series X sounds like a jet engine and just isn’t built for purpose.

Nintendo Switch is part of the Ninth Generation of consoles. It’s competing with the PS5 and X-Box Series X. It’s also the successor to the Wii U, which was Nintendo’s Eighth Generation console.

While technology naturally evolves over time, sometimes it's a slap in the face. I purchased a VR ready system when the Occulus Rift officially released and while there has been advances in all components, I find I don't meet the Processor minimum specs for the Ubisoft release of the new Avatar game. Age it seems, has caught up to me again. Such a battle ever since the early 90's.

I just don't think I can agree with this. I do believe all the drama and greed behind the doors of game development has become something outrageous, but the games and experiences that we're able to achieve, whether through the overall game or even new tech being used for whatever title, is pretty impressive. It seems like the community one second is talking about how "stacked the month is with new games" and even a few "this might be the best year in gaming!" To then just talk about how disappointed we are. Maybe I'm taking away the wrong thing from this topic, but honestly I'm curious and just plain out stoked for the future and what gaming as a whole has in store for us.

Another issue is this consoles are weak, even weaker than PS4 and Xbox One at launch, all true next gen engines and games like UE 5 titles, alan wake 2, and avatar run at poor native resolutions on ps5 and series x, usually native 720p or 900p even games that aren't that demanding like helldivers 2 or rise of the ronin run at native 1080p on ps5 no wonder some studios are developing games on old engine like ue 4, (FF 7 rebirth, returnal and stellar blade)
