This CONSPIRACY CHANGED the College Football Landscape... (The Boise State vs TCU Fiesta Bowl)

During the 2009-2010 football season Boise State and TCU both qualified to play in a BCS bowl game. It was the first time two non-AQ conference teams played in a major bowl in the same season. While many hoped for them to play Cincinnati or Florida, they instead were matched up against each other. This sparked a conspiracy that AQ conference leaders did not want to be embarrassed for the second year in a row after Utah beat Alabama, they year before. During this time period there were a lot of conversations about the creation of the college football playoff and had a non-AQ school beaten a "big boy" for the second year in a row things would have only intensified. Instead, we have a conspiracy on our hands that could have changed the college football landscape forever.

Kellen Moore is from my hometown and those years he started dor Boise State was some of the most electric years in CFB history. It was a damn shame what the NCAA was doing to these "smaller" schools that showed that they could hang with the big dogs every year. Boise State had some of the most dominant years ever and they were still weren't taking seriously in the rankings

Everyone always believes that smaller schools no matter how far they go, no matter what record, no matter who they beat, should never be allowed to play for a Natty. Like they fight their hardest to be noticed and Everyone treats teams like UCF, Cincinnati, and Boise State as if they were fluke teams. Why have 130+ teams for FBS if only 4 can compete for a Natty? Why have a top 25 if 21 of those teams don't matter?? I don't understand it!!!!

What always got me during that season was ESPN was singing TCU’s praises for being (correctly so) an amazing team. During conference championship week, ESPN was even suggesting that if Nebraska beat Texas, then TCU could play in the BCS championship because that’s how good they were. Then when Boise State beat TCU, ESPN turned around and said “wow you barely beat a mountain west team, how do you expect to play with the big boys?”

Correction: It was going to be Cincinnati playing in the national championship if Nebraska beat Texas. Cincinnati was ranked#3, higher than TCU was after Conf Championship week. Cincinnati had just beat #15 Pitt in the CCG the day before Nebraska vs Texas.

@FasterJTG 11 ай бұрын
@@patrickmagarian1603Correction to your correction: Cincinnati was narrowly ranked higher than TCU in the final rankings based on the points system the BCS used. Both human polls used by the BCS had TCU above Cincinnati, but Cincinnati was being treated very highly by the computer polls used by the BCS, even ranking them above Texas, which narrows TCU and Cincinnati’s difference in computer rankings if Texas loses, so TCU likely is ranked above Cincinnati had Texas lost.

The BCS cabal was self-evident in 2009. When the Orange Bowl passed on TCU and chose 9-4 Va. Tech, leaving the undefeated Horned Frogs, with wins over Clemson, Virginia, and Utah (which had defeated 'Bama in the 2008 Sugar Bowl) for the Fiesta's second selection to take on Fiesta's first pick, Boise, it was unquestionable that the fix was in. Plainly the powers were worried that both TCU and Boise would defeat AQ teams and utterly expose the myth of AQ superiority over the best of the mid-majors.

2008 was even more evident, of the bcs' bs control, they had Florida vs Oklahoma in the championship when the 2 best teams were very obviously Texas and Utah. In fact I even recall polls taken throughout the country that season with like 95-98% of voters saying Texas should be in over Oklahoma. That year Texas ended the season first place in the big 12 (they won the 3 way tie because their win vs OU was not at home, and they beat them fairly easily) yet was not allowed to play in the big 12 championship because the bcs had Oklahoma in 1st place. Which is bs and was the first time and I think only time that ever happened, because the bcs cannot force conferences to prevent the team #1 in the conference from playing in the conference championship, yet the #1 team in the conference was not allowed to play in it.

Multiple problems with this comment. 1.) The 2009 Orange Bowl was for the 2008 season, not 2009. The 2009 VT team played in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. 2.) Even if the Orange Bowl chose 9-4 VA Tech, that 2008 VA Tech team won the ACC Championship game, meaning they were contractually obligated to play in the Orange Bowl UNLESS they were in the national title. In other words, you used the wrong equation and got the right answer. The fix was in for Boise and TCU to not mess up anything, but not in the way you present here.

Looking back, those TCU, Boise, and Utah teams all could've won a national championship if they weren't saddled with the G5 moniker. From 2008-2010, at least one of those teams should've gotten a chance, because all of them would've been capable of doing so.

FBS football is such a weird sport. P5 conferences just hate giving G5 a chance simply because their big brands and big money. I always confused by those people who refused bigger playoffs, they thought the games would be blowouts, and G5 shouldn't be in the conversation with P5. In my opinion, if we have FCS playoff system in FBS, in the long term, recruiting will be much different and give chances for G5 to build their brands because those new playoff spots. As a neutral fan, I really wish to see more more faces.

It will take a recruiting cycle to see the benefits of allowing more teams in. It would even the playing field. For those people who say it would be blowouts, Cincinnati versus Alabama was a lot closer than Georgia versus Michigan. There are already blowouts.. I think what they're afraid of is eventually there will start being upsets. Eventually recruiting will even out just a little bit. Eventually one of these G5 teams won't have a catastrophic injury and have most of their team healthy for a game. What separates a lot of these teams is not their starters but the depth and if a great G5 team doesn't have a lot of injuries it will be able to compete. Everyone knows about UCF in 2017 button 2018 UCF lost their quarterback. I know LSU was playing without some starters going pro but losing your starting quarterback is a huge deal, much bigger than the few players who left LSU because they were replaced by four and five stars. In 2018 Memphis scored more points on Penn State than any other team that year. They also gave up a lot of points but also stop Penn State on a huge 4th down play in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately for them, in interception in the end zone and another turnover ended their hopes. But the fact that they scored that much against one of the better defenses showed that they could play with anybody on offense.

Boise state has offered every major school a home and home and 99% of them won't play Boise state. They'll play all them division 2 teams but don't want anything to do with Boise. Just too bad they had to get rid of the small schools entirely with paying players now. It's a shame because Boise state will always be dominate in any division they play.
@BG-ig1rd
@BG-ig1rd 2 жыл бұрын
Boise State would get dominated if they played in any real conference. Every major school refusing to play them isn't out of a fear of them necessarily. If they could play them every single week, they would take that in a heartbeat competition-wise, but they wouldn't because playing Boise State every week would lessen their strength of schedule. It's the same thing that is happening with like North Dakota State and whatnot now... the lesser school has that slight chance to beat you, so they don't do it because that one loss could mean they don't get a chance at a title game when those games are supposed to essentially be warmup games for them before the huge conference games. I said it in another comment here too, but look at Utah for reference since they made the shift to a better conference. They were in the MWC (where Boise State is now) and went 13-0, 10-3, and 10-3 between 2008-2010. Then, they went to Pac-12 the next year and went 8-5, 5-7, and 5-7 in 2011-2013 before finally turning it around into winning seasons again in 2014 to the present (once they finally had that recruiting power to match the talent of the division). Boise State is the best team in a bad division in which none of the teams get any of the nations top recruits. The talent level isn't comparable at all. And, that was Utah going to the Pac 12, a division which generally gets eaten up by the even bigger conferences like the SEC. Saying Boise State would dominate any division is ridiculously silly. If Boise State wants a shot at a title, you can't be bragging to the big boys about how you went 14-0 against the likes of Nevada, Idaho, New Mexico State, San Jose State, etc. while they are going 11-0 against Auburn, LSU, Alabama, etc. Every single one of those big schools would be undefeated in the MWC too. There's a reason Boise State plays in front of 36k fans tops while those schools are playing in front of 80k+. It's just not the same.

Everyone seems to forget the fact that if the mid majors (Boise, UCF, ect ) played in the power 5 they would have more access to power 5 players. Right now they are pulling 2-3 star athletes. Just being in the power 5 opens up their recruiting tremendously, thus improving their roster, thus making them even more competitive, thus making them able to play with the "big boys".

Yes, there was a conspiracy to prevent non auto qualifiers from playing qualifiers. Why? Aside from a Hawaii/Georgia BCS bowl game, the non auto Qualifiers won every time. The BCS school presidents that are running their mouths are the same guys that have never been a school president of a non BCS school. Why aren't we hearing from the guys who've been at both, such as Bernie Machen? That guy was at both Utah and Florida. He hired Urban Meyer for the head coaching job at both schools.

Not talked about enough is how Boise was only two years removed from their victory over Oklahoma in the fiesta bowl, which is seen as among one of the greatest football games played at any level. I would argue the opposite in that game though. Yeah, it was one of the greatest games ever, but that was because of the odds of that actually playing out the way it did. Keep in mind, Boise State had to perfectly execute three trick plays in a row (the first of which happened on a 4th and 18), to make that happen. They got extremely lucky, and replaying that same sequence of events probably fails 99/100 times. If any one of those fails any of the times, it's game over and a loss...that's why it went down as the greatest game. Same with the 25 point comeback of the Patriots over Atlanta. It wasn't like they dominated Oklahoma and proved it... all they really proved is that they had to get extremely lucky in order to take down a team that was #8 at the time.

Yes! It is the same way that Utah got screwed the previous year. I once sat down and mapped out all the bowl games with all the conferences... You could totally create a winner takes all tournament using the existing bowl games to decide the national championship. It has stuck in the big conference's craw ever since BYU was awarded the National championship in 1984. In their defence they either defeated every other major contender or beat the team that beat the other contenders that particular year and finished as the only undefeated team. But they were an inferior team from an inferior conference and therefore didn't deserve it and the powers-that-be set out to make sure it would never happen again. So every time an upstart small-school dares lift up its head... slap! Behind-the-scene manipulation.

Not to mention OSU had to run the gauntlet of an actual conference, unlike the self-tailored schedule ND has enjoyed for years because they were too self-absorbed to join a conference among all the "plebs." Unlike the 2012 Notre Dame ragdoll that got manhandled up and down the field from the first kickoff, the 2002 OSU team actually belonged in the natty conversation. Undefeated or not, that ND team was not deserving of their spot in that game. They beat scrub competition and didn't play in a conference, end of debate. By your position, the undefeated UCF, Boise State, and TCU teams of recent past had just as much claim to a natty bid as anyone else, except no sane person would argue that. Everyone with an objective view knew ND would get embarrassed before the game ever started, and they did. Their schedule that year was sorry, as it is most years, and like most years, they believed going 12-0 through it should be an automatic bid to the BCS game "becuz tHey'RE nOtRE DamE!" No program in all of college football is more consistently overrated and coddled by media pundits than ND. You can point to several other seasons in the last decade to back up that claim. ND is a blight upon all of college football, and every time they get pummeled by legitimately elite teams just reinforces that fact.

Western Michigan went undefeated in '16 and didn't get into the playoff despite being one of only two undefeated teams in 1-A that year. Central Florida still claims a National Title for their undefeated 2017 season when they weren't selected as one of the four playoff participants, despite being the only undefeated Division 1-A team at the end of that regular season, and then their 2018 squad was denied *again* after an undefeated regular season. Two undefeated regular seasons in a row and they couldn't even sniff an invite to the playoff. As seperate to the information of this video, I would like someone to explain to me why Texas made the national championship over TCU. Now selection for the BCS in 2009 came from 66% weight ranking of human polls of the AP, Coaches and Harris Polls and 33% BCS computer polls. I understand that there would be some variability on the computer based polling to a certain degree but statistically Texas clearly made the selection over TCU. The problem is I don’t see any reason why they were. In terms of performance on the season, TCU beat both ranked opponents by a larger margin of victory and averaged a larger margin of victory on the season than UT. On offense was ranked #5 in total offense by SRS, #3 in total offense by SP+ and by the NCAA Offensive Production they ranked #4. On defense they ranked #1 in the country across SP+ and SRS. Now for everyone favorite comparison of P5 and G5 teams - SOS. At face value TCU should get the nod as per the BCS rankings they beat more and higher ranked opponents than Texas: TCU: beat #12 BYU 38-7, #18 Utah 55-28 and #20 Clemson 14-10. Texas: beat #13 Nebraska 13-12, #19 Oklahoma State 41-14 But very often the number of ranked wins and what ranked team you beat has historically not mattered for G5 teams, so let’s look at how SOS was actually calculated at the time. Per the BCS SOS was measured by “determining the cumulative won/loss records of the team's opponents and the cumulative won/loss records of the teams' opponents' opponents. The formula shall be weighted two-third (66 2/3%) for the opponent's record and one-third (33 1/3%) for the opponents' opponents record.” Now I actually went through and did the full scale calculation for both Texas and TCU and this is what I found: Texas - opponents records: 87-78 - Opp-opp records: 1117-958 - 0.348 + 0.183 = 0.531 TCU - opponents records: 80-69 - Opp-opp records:1036-799 - 0.354 + 0.184 = 0.538 So even statistically speaking TCU had a superior SOS than Texas. So how is it that a team with a greater margin of victory, better defense, better SOS and only ranked 1 spot behind Texas on offense, somehow got ranked two spots behind Texas by the BCS?
@Layer67
@Layer67 2 жыл бұрын
Nahh strength of schedule matters, of course TCU would blowout MW teams and only beat two ranked opponents all season in 09. An mid 2010’s TCU, team would be more realistic as they are now in big 12 and play better competition year around.

@@Layer67 So again read the whole post….. TCU statistically had a BETTER SOS than Texas. So if SOS isn’t the reason then what is it? “They only beat 2 ranked opponents in 2009” I guess this depends on what ranking system you use as they also beat #20 Clemson who was runner up in the ACC. If your gonna go strictly on BCS then guess what TCU STILL beat the more ranked teams, higher ranked teams, and TCU still beat beat them by a significantly larger margin. You act like the MWC was clearly inferior to the B12 yet by OOC they went 3-2 against the B12….. I was giving Texas Oklahoma State, which they had a much higher margin, but if you go strictly by BCS then this significant win goes away and all you have is a #21 ranked Nebraska who Texas beat by 1 point. Compared to #15 BYU who TCU beat by 31 and #22 Utah who TCU beat by 27. So that’s really not a good look for Texas…..

What a lot of people don’t realize is that had Texas lost, Texas or Florida would have likely played in the title anyway. This happened in 2003, when OU got blown out in the Big 12 title game, and still came out as the BCS number 1. The computers always favor the bigger conferences. Also, what the video really glosses over is that the Big East was still around which is why Cincy got an automatic bid. The Big East was really trending down after the defection of Miami, Florida St, and Boston College. Talks of them losing their automatic bid were already in the works and when five more schools left in the coming years, it was a done deal. Not many people thought that highly of Cincy and them playing Florida was not much different than TCU or Boise playing Florida. Having said that, I believe both TCU and Boise would have played Florida better, but doubt either could beat them with it being Tebow’s last game. And yes, it was really stupid to have TCU and Boise play each other, but I don’t subscribe to the conspiracy theory. I think the Fiesta Bowl picked the best teams for the best matchup and the Rose Bowl’s Big Ten/PAC 10 history limited the options. Unfortunately, it didn’t line up with what we the fans wanted and thus we’ll never know if they’d have upset an Ohio State, Oregon or Iowa.

Personally I thought BCS was a joke from the beginning, and have been pushing for 16 teams. This would provide the same number of rounds as the FCS playoffs, but include more teams. All FBS conference champions would receive an automatic bid, and the remaining spots would be wild cards. Let them play on the field to decide who the best team is, giving all FBS conferences a chance.

I hated the BCS system, and think that the two round "play-off" is more or less the same thing -- unfair systems where 40% of the teams have no prayer of even sniffing the championship game even if the run the table. But in all fairness, you could maybe argue that this is just a system that's closer to rendition that we see in other country's sports leagues, and not like the play-off oriented systems that we're used to here. FIFA uses a lot of rendition for their non-American club leagues: different leagues exists in given countries, ranked by quality/competitiveness. You move up and down based on performance. Arguably, if you're a mid-major, your job isn't to compete for a national title, its to impress the Power conferences so that you can move into one to compete for a national title potentially. Its a deviation from what we're used to, but not necessarily quite as unheard of or unfair as you would think.

"its to impress the Power conferences so that you can move into one to compete for a national title potentially." Except thats not at all how you join a major conference. If it was perhaps you could explain why the B10 took Rutgers over Cincinatti from the Big East in 2011, or why the B12 took Colorado back over Boise State, or why the B10 took UCLA over SDSU?

Whether or not you folks want to hear this, short of the alumni of the weaker teams (Boise, TCU) and fans in that state, the vast majority of America doesn’t care about the underdog and the narrative is well over done. It’s not rocket science. This is the same reason the NFL doesn’t flex a pair of competitive 8-8 teams to a national game short of when one of the other teams is a big draw. Any other time…..they’ll pass. Or they’ll take a bigger name with a bad record 100% of the time. The Packers, for example, will never be flexed out of a game. Nobody cares about the middle of the pack teams scraping by to compete against the heavy hitters. That’s just a fact. Boise State was never going to change that. No matter how good they were. Fair? To fans of the 12-0 team? No. But. Would football watching America rather see 11-1 Texas play 10-2 Georgia for the right to claim a national title should all 3 teams in the top 3 finish 11-1. See how that works? Not a conspiracy, even if Boise finished 12-0, they still didn’t travel the same road as those other 3 11-1 teams. That’s why they don’t just hand teams the crown based on record and when that happened they STILL asked the AP and coaches. This screaming that undefeated teams get the short end need to come back to the fact coaches and ap voters could change it, and always could have, but they don’t or didn’t. There is no way Boise, if the coaches or AP voted them 1 unanimously, would be held out of a top bowl. But they were. Because unlike coaches and the AP, fans cherish under dogs. They see themselves in them. Coaches and AP voters look at what team has 6-7-8 future NFL stars on them and how those kids will match up to similar competition. They don’t care about Kellen Moore’s dominance over a bunch teams that are desperately out of the AP polling all together. Really, competition matters. Sorry to be such a bummer here. But an 12-0 WMU team that beats Akron and Miami Ohio isn’t as good as an 11-1 Ohio State team that only lost to Iowa and beat 6 other ranked teams.

100% agree with this. All of those big schools would go 12-0 in the MWC too each year. Playing Idaho and Nevada isn't the same as playing Auburn, LSU, and Alabama. If that were the case, those recruits would be going to Boise State because they'd be guaranteed a title game. But, that's not how it works, and it shouldn't. The MWC doesn't have the recruiting power and talent of the big school, plain and simple. If the national title game was purely based on records, those power 5 schools would LOVE to play Boise State every week instead of their regular conference schedule. I said it before, but look at Utah as the perfect example because they made the shift to a better conference. They were in the MWC (where Boise State is now) and went 13-0, 10-3, and 10-3 between 2008-2010. Then, they went to Pac-12 the next year and went 8-5, 5-7, and 5-7 in 2011-2013 before finally turning it around into winning seasons again in 2014 to the present. Competition matters, and Boise State doesn't play against any in that division.

This era of G5 teams completely destroys your underdog narrative. If you go 5-1 in major national games against the “big boys” are you really an underdog and are you the hurricane coming to beat the sense into fans that’s there a new program in town? The ONLY evidence you have to support your narrative at the time is 07 Hawaii vs Georgia. In every other signature matchup between the best G5 and a Power Brand P5 team the G5 team won and controlled the game and on multiple occasions beat the ever loving sh!t out of the P5 team….

Great video but I disagree on 2:49. I think most agree that Boise State and TCU definitely could hold their own against Alabama/Texas in 2009 and even an SEC/Big 12/B1G schedule, but at the end of the day, Alabama and Texas were more deserving of the national title game spot because they had a tougher schedule(based on ranking, talent, team expenditure, etc.) than TCU/Boise during the season and since only two teams could play for the championship at the time, it's about who deserves it, which while it's a shame that there isn't a playoff system that could accommodate all of them, Texas and Alabama deserved those two spots the most of the 5 undefeated teams. With that said, Boise State and TCU should've played other teams in the BCS, rather than each other. It felt as ripped off now as it did, granted it did give a great game

Without Colt Mccoy yes, they could have handled Texas, that was the only thing that kept Alabama from getting smoked, was playing agai st a terrible Garrett Gilbert who gave Alabama 13 points with 2 minutes something left in the game by fumbling and throwing 2 pics in that time frame. But I do think Tcu and Boise could have given Alabama a run for their money.

I just hate the “weekly gauntlet” argument. Every SEC team gets a free fcs game once year, plays teams like Vanderbilt (and one other really bad team, depending on the year) and only has 8 conference games.

That quote at the end from the dude from the SEC and Big 10 is such horse shit. And it has always been. It's the argument ppl continue to have to this very day on tv and otherwise. These Power 5 conferences don't have top to bottom incredible leagues every yr. And they never have. MOST of the power 5 schools aren't qualifying for the CFP. Everything is Top Heavy. In the CFP era only Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson & Georgia have at least 2 appearances in the title game. No conference even deserve any type of AQ status besides the SEC. It's just bullshit to keep the rich rich. NIL is going to continue to change the landscape. I can't wait to see what College Football looks like in 3 yrs bc of NIL.

All you have to do is follow the money!! The big schools are so arrogant that they feel that all the rest of us peons don't deserve to play them. Enter the 2008 Sugar Bowl where Utah destroyed Alabama. BYU beat Utah during the regular season in 2021 and got snubbed again. If I were BYU, and 10-2--beating 5 Pac 12 Teams, I would refuse to play in any bowl except on News Years Day. However, that said, it would be so easy to figure out a college Playoff system. There are 12 conferences; the winners of each conference would have an automatic berth. They then would select 4 more teams that have at least 10 wins and have a playoff system like college basketball using the bowl games as the platform. Easy peasy. Have a good day.

It was definitely a conspiracy. If you allow both of them to play better teams as they say and they both win, how would the major conferences counter that. I remember i was pissed when this happened and to this day still upset about it. I have learned over the years it's all about $ so I don't get upset anymore. People laugh when I tell them it's all a setup then they see it comes true and be like 🤔 I think you maybe right lol.

I’ve never cared for boise bc they DO play cupcake schedules every year and HAVE had chances to move to difference power conferences and turned it down. No they don’t get a chance to go into a natty bc they’ve never deserved it. These tcu teams on the other hand have a better better argument, IF they were in the big 10 at the time. My memory isn’t working so I don’t recall. But Boise played cupcake teams and had ONE good team a year on their schedule. Just Boise butthurt fans
