I don’t use guides nor gauges when I file my chains. I sharpen for the cutting point, cutting edge, & I do not forget the gullet. I switch from my round file (running a Husky 572 XP w/ 28” bar, skip tooth 3/8 chain & my current backup is a Husky 61 w/ 24” bar) to my flat file & shave 5 strokes from the raker. Then I roll forward & switch sides till I’m done, with an eye for angles & that pinprick. I try to be conservative on the metal I shave, but I’m not satisfied till each tooth is razor sharp. I’m bucking 2 cords or more per day, & the time to hand file pays dividends 100%! If I’m getting good square chips; not shreds. And I flip my bar whenever I remove the chain, & file down any burrs. I learned all of it by watching Buckin’ Billy Ray & years of daily bucking. Now I love to file! We have firewood to get out to our customers, so it’s imperative to have that razor sharp chain… every time. Greetings from the Bitterroot!

Great wood craft work. Great sharpening teaching. Amateur here in Alabama. Have found often with some tougher woods like hickory, oak or sweet gum, the rakers wear such I only need the round file to sharpen teeth and no raker sticks out over gage when I check rakers. But with easy woods like pine, yellow poplar (aka tulip tree) or black cherry, yep, pretty much all the rakers need adjustment after round filing the teeth.

I see a lot of trees being cut down that would be Prime for a totem pole or a sculpture. I wish more people would see this. So much talent!! Great advice on doing the rakers. Most people overlook this. I have a small machine and I get to do all my friends chains. By the time they get to me some need a lot of work.

Wish Carlton still made raker gauges like before. Husky gauges are almost as soft as the Oregon and Stihl gauges. The only one that appears to be made of hardened steel is the West Coast Saw. And with theirs you can set the rakers at four different depths depending on wood you are cutting.
@gerrytrader4756
@gerrytrader4756 Жыл бұрын
Try heating up your husky raker gauge until its bright red hot then quench it in some oil like atf. Your file should then skate right over it. Don’t quench them in water they may become brittle and break easily. These gauges are made out high carbon steel and will harden, if you get right they’ll just about last forever. E

My solution to a dull chain is give it to an Amish friend, then eat some peanut butter pie his wife makes. But on a serious note, I tried an old (4x sharpened) chain on some poplar and maple. You were right it works really nice.

Hey, sweet totem pole! My whole inspiration in becoming a chainsaw carver was to carve a totem pole. Ive been carving fir four years and havnt carved a totem pole yet. Its not easy to work with giant logs without machinery. My parents named me Forest Otter Thompson and im a white guy. Not sure what they were thinking. But, i need to carve a totem pole so bad its making me crazy. So, i called a guy with a crain, and, im going to get started real soon. Keep up the good work gentlemen! Thanks for the inspiration!! 🙏
