Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.
The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.
While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.
The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:
1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy
Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

They need to plant mangroves. They are a natural barrier and over time they build up the land.

Thas a good idea, or maybe they also can plant the corals? The corals can protect the land from a big wave, this type of problems happend in my country at the beach a couple of years ago, it destroy my step grandmother's childhood house. ( I didn't excits yet, but my mother told me after her death😢)

@Splexsychiick: Mangroves dont just grow on every sea shores... They need special conditions... like High in Silt/ muddy shallows..NOT SANDY. They WON'T survive if too sandy.

@@jaydon.2833 Humans have been burning down the Amazon for a very long time. It's a terrible problem and Brazil needs to sort it out. I wasn't trying to make it look less important, in fact I was trying to do the opposite. Illegal farmers have been burning down massive areas of the forest to make way for their animal and palm oil farms for way to long and the Brazilian government knows exactly what's happening.

the sea level has risen for a long time, doggerland was once inhabited by land animals. Long before the start of human caused pollution. Maybe just be realistic and adapt, we humans are smart.

I'm assuming u can just connect the dots from here... It is totally true that humans are causing part of the rising sea levels; it is also true that us humans are not the only cause for this problem. Nevertheless it is OUR job to take responsibility and action.

Just remember, sea level is not rising, some islands is sinking and it's happened all the time in history (well, avtually not sinking, seawater just wash them away in time. Climate change has happened too all the time in history.

My friend, this is a good piece. Your production value is also very good. I found this while researching Kiribati. I am going down there to do a documentary on climate change out of a sense of responsibility. I have to tell you though that research has not been easy and I am wondering if you can point me to resources on where to stay down there and how to get a guide. I have tried several avenues including Kiribati tourism and some hotels but cannot get responses. I do know I will be going to Christmas Island by Fiji Air via Honolulu, but that is all I have managed to be able to research other than fishing lodges.

Braindead terms. People use the term Climate Change when them mean HUMAN CAUSED PREVENTABLE Climate Change. I do believe in Climate change, it has change for millions of years b4 humans put out this tiny bit of extra CO² and yes its tiny TINY TINY what humans produce. Also china is starting another Coal Power plant EVERY WEEK. Its literally MEANINGLESS if you buy some "CO² Neutral" marketing product or whatever you will not effect the climate. Ice ages and worm period will come and go like in the past. Humans have to adapt to what the earth dictates. And yes Climate change is real, as real as it was without humans around!
