I think I might be able to understand this. In reality, the game is probably only _barely_ broken, it just looks completely broken. Entering a door while a powerup animation is probably the starting point. I could easily see how that bugs the game. The second time you enter the door while it's playing, it probably resets the tileset number and position to 0. Horizontal day ground theme is probably tileset 0, especially because it was most likely to be added first. The reason the game looks so glitchy is because the horizontal background isn't tall enough to cover the whole vertical level. That means the game doesn't draw the background where it isn't specified, and it just leaves the previous frame. This creates a trail behind every object. When these trails fill up the whole screen, which happens very quickly, it makes a very chaotic pattern. This happens a lot when modern video games glitch out. The same effect can happen when shift+dragging something (with multiple distinct colors near the edges) around very fast in MS paint. Try it!

I think I might be able to make sense of this glitch. Since the game tries using a horizontal background in a vertical level, it just fills in whatever was in that place last before as the background. As for why the background becomes horizontal, I have no idea

I actually like the glitched background of SMB SMB3 and SMW, it looks cool, NSMBU kinda no, and hell yeah SM3DW black and white background looks perfectly good, i want it to be canon

If you pause on the right side in the 3DW theme, it'll turn red and blue instead of black and white

If I had to guess, I would believe this involves fooling the vertical subarea into using the horizontal background. So the hall of mirrors effect happens because of the lack of a background.

That graphical glitch on 3d world seems like that glitch on splatoon 2 when you enter a specific number of times in your friends list in-game and then the graphics really go crazy...

I can explain the graphical glitch. First, I must explain how rendering levels with backgrounds typically work in games. Imagine having a large canvas, then paint it with a nice background, and lastly paint some people. Once you've done that, paint the same background over everything, but this time, move one of the people by a bit. This is how background rendering typically works in games, and now that I have that out of the way, I must explain how the game loads sub-areas. If you zoomed out all the way and made a sub-area, you'd notice it's above the main area. The reason why you can't tell in-game is due to the developers locking the camera. It wouldn't be optimal to have to load an entirely new level every time you enter a pipe, so they simply just change your position instead. Another thing to note is there wouldn't be a reason to spend resources loading two backgrounds at a time, so they only load the one you're at. Finally, the reason why the graphics are all warped; it seems that there's a way to break the camera-lock, and as a result, you can fly to the sub-area, and since the sub-area's background isn't being rendered, the only thing you see is the objects constantly getting painted.

The glitch is easy to understand for non-3DW themes (it simply forgets to draw the background so the sprites leave trails; any experienced 2D graphics programmer should be very familiar with this effect); I'd be lying if I said I wasn't totally baffled by how it manifests in the 3DW theme, though. Reminds me of the DKCR and DKC:TF silhouette levels a bit.

Fun Fact: You cant go under spikes or jump over them. A barrier prevents you from doing that. But the barrier can actually be seen if you use a sound effect that greatly shakes the camera. I like how it looks in the SMW style. Try this one out for urselves boys.
