This is the documentary that the U.S government doesn't want you to see!
This documentary has been uploaded for EDUCATION purposes and to show the public the harsh realities of what CAPITAL PUNISHMENT really means...and the horror of getting it wrong.
You will have a fly on the wall view of condemned man EDWARD EARL JOHNSON and his lawyer over the space of 14 days. You will be with him in his cell, with his lawyer, with his family and spiritual leader all the way...right up to the moment of his EXECUTION!
Never before and probably, never again will such unlimited access ever be given again.
Brace yourself to go on an extremely emotional journey as a man, considered by everyone, including the PRISONS WARDEN, to be completely innocent is fighting to stop a seemingly, unstoppable execution.
If you would like to end capital punishment in your country (U.S) or any country, visit reprieve.org/ to find out what you can do.
THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN UPLOADED TO TEACH/EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE ULTIMATE PUNISHMENT THAT IS CARRIED OUT IN THEIR NAME & WHAT IT REALLY MEANS. THEREFORE IT IS ALLOWED UNDER FAIR USE.
This video has been uploaded following reasons:
1) To demonstrate to the public the harsh reality of what a sentence of "DEATH" really means.
2) To show the full horror of what it means to get it wrong when an innocent man is executed.
3) The lasting damage it often causes to those carrying out the sentence...on all sides.
4) The data shows the death penalty does not work as a deterrent.
5) Too many innocent people are executed.
Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing.

Think it can’t happen to you? I was picked up for questioning on a burglary charge. I asked the law enforcement people “what makes you think I did it”? Their reply” the burglar was wearing army socks”; I said “well that leaves me out, I was a Marine and I only had Marine socks”! Law enforcement said I knew what they meant and I said no I don’t! I’ve never committed a burglary in my life. I told em I wanted a lawyer and I wasn’t answering anymore questions. I was eventually released. For a little bit I could’ve been charged with a crime I knew nothing about. Innocent people do get convicted!

This happened to a man who lived near me. There was a murder of a barmaid in the bar after closing. Ray was seen just talking to her. It ended up being convicted and sentenced to death and spent 10 years on death row. Turned out a lawyer saw his case and his conviction was overturned due to DNA evidence. They then arrested the right guy and Ray was a free man and was awarded money for the state’s screw up. I hope he lives the rest of his life in peace and happy

@@lynnstrand9367 Murder is when a person is accused of intentionally killing another person after planning!! to do so. There are no degrees of murder at common law. This is a modern statutory rule which divides murder into degrees according to its mens rea, but the exact definition of the degrees of murder varies by jurisdiction. Both first-degree murder and second-degree murder are intentional homicide crimes. Manslaughter is when a person kills another person, but with less culpability. There may not have been intent, but the death occurred because of their actions. This can happen in accidental circumstances and sentences vary, but are usually less severe than second-degree murder. Felony murder is a type of homicide in which a person dies while the defendant is in the commission of a violent felony, even if they did not cause the death. Laws regarding homicide vary from state to state and can evolve and change over time. Justifiable homicide may be when a person kills in self-defense or similar circumstances. It is not a legal charge but a classification used by police in cases where no crime was committed. The person who committed the killing will not be held criminally responsible, but civil penalties may still apply. ''Justifiable homicides'' also include!! killings permitted by law, such as an execution! for a capital crime. A justifiable homicide in self-defense occurs where a person, without any fault on his part in provoking or bringing on the difficulty, kills another under reasonable apprehension of death or great bodily harm to himself. Justifiable homicides are not the same as homicides committed under the heat of passion or with diminished capacity, which may be considered mitigating circumstances that reduce the actor’s culpability with regards to a killing.

It doesn't matter how you approach it there is no easy nor comfortable way to process the emotions and thoughts that stories like this bring to the surface. My wife was raised in a conservative household. She went to law school and completely changed her POV with respect to the death penalty. One of the things they taught was how it is better to let a murderer go free than to execute an innocent person. They studied many cases where innocent people were executed. Being convicted of any crime and doing time when you are innocent is horrible enough. Forget the death penalty.

Respect for the guy in uniform who from the outset wanted to display the upmost respect for his family in the situation. He was able to take a step back and see that any of them could be in their shoes. I don't know if he was doing that for the camera but he seemed to be a genuine, believable guy. I'm almost convinced at the end, he may have had his doubts whether an innocent man was put to death as he was addressing the press conference. He seemed to be struggling. What do you think they would have done to him? I’m sure at the very least he would have gotten a near fatal beating, at worst gotten shot and they would have said he was trying to run or had grabbed one of their guns. I agree! This case was a railroading case, just because he was black. I wonder if they kept any hair, saliva, etc., that they could do a DNA on, today. Bet they'd find he was innocent. But God is the one who does the real judging. I pray this man was granted more mercy, grace, and peace upon his execution death. Heck....a white husband in Washington State was accused of raping and murdering his wife, was found guilty based on the kind of truck he drove. Years after he was executed, DNA was done, and they found the man was innocent. It took a few years for the DA's office, the Judge, and the 3 police officers to finally get their justice from the justice system....they all lost their jobs, were disbarred, and the State had to pay millions to his family for the care of his children. It was found that the police and DA planted evidence to get him convicted. But the DNA rape kit swab was still there....and the same judge kept allowing the evidence that proved he was innocent, to be suppressed. That case went to the Supreme Court. It was a big smear on that Washington State County's justice system. Washington State rewrote death penalty laws and police detective homicide procedures. This kind of injustice happens to white people too. It's just a severe case of corruption throughout America's justice system. That's why almost every state revamped Death Row appeals and added enough time for a wrongfully convicted person to have their cases reviewed and added the number of appeals that would allow time for better technology to be developed to prevent an innocent person's wrongful execution. God bless this poor man! I pray he is at peace.

Executions Since 1976 : White Defendant / Black Victim (21) Black Defendant / White Victim (299) Jury selection is not random. The Justice system is flawed from the bottom up. Cops look good when they catch a so called criminal, prosecutors look good when they get the conviction and move up the ranks, politicians look good when they are heavy on crime. They are all in it for themselves. It's never a jury of your peers, it's a jury that will get the conviction and hand out the toughest sentence. Their success and recognition is more important than human lives. That's not OK, but has become the norm.

It's an admission on your part that you're going to do absolutely nothing, but hide that declaration behind a prayer so you can feel useful when in reality you're not. Action is what makes a difference, not prayers. Focused action that stops these things from happening to people convicted and sentenced from a severe lack of evidence. That's what is needed. Prayer is the action taken by those who lack the will to get involved and actually do something.

RIP Edward Earl Johnson (June 22, 1960 - May 20, 1987). Thank you Edward, your courage to allow this production has saved lives. Since Edward's murder, by the state of Mississippi, thirteen states have abolished the death penalty. It made a difference! It should be noted that the documentary was made by the BBC, a British organization. As well, it took British lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, to at least make sure Edward would not be forgotten. He also wrote a piece called "No steps forward for some: Edward Earl Johnson at sixty" on July 8, 2020 that provides more details into story. Sadly, it took a foreign lawyer, and foreign news organization to muster enough courage to document plight of Edward Earl Johnson. No American news organization, or media outlet had the courage to document the full story. Another well documented case of the horrors of execution is that of Cameron Todd Willingham (January 9, 1968 - February 17, 2004) . As the story goes, he was a possibly innocent American man who was convicted and executed for the murder of his three young children by arson at the family home in Corsicana, Texas, on December 23, 1991. Getting it right is not worth the price of getting wrong. We can point to cases like Timothy McVeigh, and Ted Bundy, where it's quite certain they were vicious murderers. McVeigh admitted it. Budey denied it. But you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who claims they were innocent. Still, they we're both executed, and the media portrayed it in a morally defunct way. They turned both instances into a celebration of sorts. It was barbaric and portrayed a chilling end of life in celebratory fashion. Like a hanging in town square. This type of mentality is what perpetuates executions. Just like Clive Stafford Smith said after Edward's execution: “It’s a sick world. It’s a sick world.”

@Jean Carlo henrique you need proof that he killed someone. If you actually do some digging or read an actual book on the case that with the cop case there wasnt an actual witness who saw the persons face!!!!!!!!!! &+ in the other case of the assult of the 60year old woman... She changed her story multiple times. Picked out several different people in every one of the photo line ups she had to do. I mean come on!!! You have absolutely no infinitive proof... Proof beyond a reasonable doubt right??? Absolutely not!!!! Then with the cop case they find the woman he was with in the pool hall all along and she never went anywhere, they never even looked for her!!!! The lawyers found her and she didnt get back until after the fact he was gone but the lawyers took the info to every court room, 2 every judge and none of them, not even the mayor said "ok, hold up, lets go get this woman. At least give a stay until after they talk to her??? But they didnt even do that!!!!!! Thats as bad as a different case 2day where there is dna proof but the judge just doesnt want to wait on the test... To murder someone bc you "just dont feel like it" thats disgusting and a person who isnt all about finding and digging to get the absolute truth should not have a job with any part of the judicial system PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN NOT PUT SOMEONE TO DEATH JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK SOMEONE DID A CRIME!!! YOU MUST HAVE ABSOLUTE PROOF STARING YOU IN THE FUCKING FACE OR WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT OF HAVING IT???!?!???!?!??!

To shoot n kill an unarmed person or someone running away from you or an unarmed person cuffed on the ground with your knee in his fucking neck cutting off the mans breathing!!!! You think thats okay???? A cop should get away with that???? If you think thats okay then people like you are sick. Smfh. Wtf is wrong with people now days. Absolutely insane.

I spent 10 years in the Louisiana prison system. 1 of the very many things I learned about lifers and death row inmates is after all their appeals are up they know their lives will end there. They admit anything to anyone that they get cool with. Mr. Johnson was an innocent man that was executed wrongfully.

Shouldn’t be a “wire” to reach, the death penalty is wrong, to many innocent people have been executed, and you can’t take that back, better to have them in prison and let them go if or when they are proved innocent, you can’t dig up a corpse and resurrect them, only God, if your a believer, can do that. Being on death row, especially if you ARE innocent, is definitely “cruel and unusual punishment”, and all the time the USA criticises, in their foreign policy, other countries human rights record or their oppressive political system (North Korea, China, and Russia), its just “don’t do as I do, do as I say”.

They have signs all up and down the freeways in red white and blue that say “ Don’t mess with Texas !” And they mean it !!! The death row house is straight up I-45 in huntsville and although this documentary doesn’t take place in Texas it’s very similar to what goes on there with the prison work gangs out in the fields and the officers on horse back… the prison busses full of inmates going back and forth and the attitude of the community about the death penalty. All I’m saying is don’t move to the south and think you can commit a crime and get away with it.

As implemented in the United States, the gas chamber is considered to be the most dangerous, most complicated, and most expensive method of administering the death penalty. The condemned person is strapped into a chair within an airtight chamber, which is then sealed. And the person suffocates to death the most painful way to die suffocates and burns inside his throat and airway no matter how much he tries to breathe he cannot because the gas binds to the cells and suffocates them. this is the most horrific way to die

And wow the point he made about the numbers on death row who can't afford a lawyer is bang on. Having money or not affects your chances massively in the US.Even in 2020 the amount of inmates on death row that are minorities or had no money for a lawyer is huge compared to being white or having money, even comparing death sentence to life sentences. Equality in the justice system should be a given, not a myth by now. Hearing the lawyer say basically if all of the case was put in front of a court now it would basically be thrown out. But cos of press/public opinion ect, what's "fair" won't happen screams lack of justice.

And hear them say hoped it was another way. I have to think about that cell 23 hours a day and the lights never go off, this is how uncomfortable I be around white people even at the damm Family Dollar Store, even crucified Jesus Christ not for what he preached but simply because he was not born white and sat re-elect Trump.

Right from the beginning of this video I knew in my heart that he was innocent. Those cops that pulled over on the side of the road and told him that he should say that he "just got out of the car" and then told him to "just sign" the confession without knowing what it said should have been given the death penalty in my eyes. This whole case was just so wrong. He did not deserve that. Too many black men are given the death penalty or life without parole just because they are poor and black and don't have the money for good attorneys. And I am a white woman saying this. It's a shame that the Innocence's Project wasn't available back then, but, sure am glad we have it now...if they could just take on more cases.

Someone comes forward who was with him at the time of the crime and can provide an alibi, but is sent away and told to "mind her own business". Individuals including the warden believe that he's innocent, but are unable to do anything to save this man's life. I hope that those responsible for this injustice are haunted every single day of their lives. Rest in peace among the angels young man.
