Designer Karen McAloon of x8 Property and Design shows Rick Spence how she dramatically updated a 650 sqft desert home. It went from unlivable to a modern show stopper. McAloon ripped up old linoleum on the floor and then polished the concrete slab foundation to create new flooring. In the kitchen, she took down a peninsula to open up the space to the living area, and walled over an entry door to create more room for countertops and a new range. In the bathroom, she ditched the tub to create a larger shower. And she enclosed a former patio to add a new bedroom that can double as a lounge space.
McAloon also shares several of her favorite design tips, including how to install ceiling lights to make a small room look larger, using clerestory windows to make a space more versatile, wall mounts sinks for more counter space and window placement to take advantage of the best views.

Who needs a huge house with marble and gold fixtures when you can have a cozy, calming place like this... not me for sure! I would take this beautiful house over any mansion any day. Love it! ❤️

Me, me...I want a big house, we living in a bi-level ranch is too small for my family....4 children, plus my in laws, 2 dogs, 2 cats....

@@Aliciaek we raised our seven kids and helped raise a couple others in our 1,365 sq ft home. We homeschooled five of them too so our home was always full. Besides being small, our house has a terrible floorplan. Not open at all but we converted the two car garage into two bedrooms, had average so the kids had tons of room to play outside, and bought a 60 ft mobile building to use as a classroom with a separate playroom inside.

Damn Karen, Rick didn't say you were a magician. The house is beautiful. I loved everything you did, especially adding a second bedroom. You took a tiny house and glamorized it. Well done. Thank you for sharing.

It’s beautiful now. Love the decor. I love a small home. I love a polished concrete. In Tennessee it’s not a big hit. But this Tennessee girl likes them. The perfect size kitchen. I love a 10x 10. With nice appliances. I am thinking about blue tiles in my kitchen. I bought a small country home three yrs ago. Been slowly making it my own. And you can do quality in a small space without going over your budget. Love the guest room. It’s perfect. I want to do the exact same thing with the twin beds in our cabin lake house. To serve two purposes. This was awesome Karen ! Leslye

I've never heard of Joshua Tree. But I like the name. I also like that she created a second bedroom that can also be a hangout space. I'm a reader. So I instantly imagined myself just sitting there with a lot of comfy pillows around me and reading a good book. Ideally I would have liked to see a separate tub and shower. But there wasn't space for that. That house was desperately in need of some love and attention. And she made a lot of improvements. She did a great job.

Los Angeles and Hollywood has long been a magnet for some of the most creative people in the world. But it's also a business. So, when they need to "get away" they come to Joshua Tree. It's why you see Joshua Trees in the background of so many movies TV shows and adverts. The main attraction is Joshua Tree National Park, established in 1936.

Love every aspect of this desert home. You maximized the space and gave it the illusion of being larger than it really is with large windows, lighting, etc. The decor is great too. I think you must have saved a lot of money by merely polishing the cement floors instead of alternative floor options. Really nice final result!

Does anyone know how the plumbing and water supply works out in the desert? I’m not from that region, so I’m not familiar if homeowners have to tap into a pre-existing water main source or if you have to dig wells, etc.?? Just curious, if anyone knows. Thx!

my kentucky home is one level on a concrete slab. the concrete is covered with hardwood and carpet. so can we take all that up and “polish” the concrete? is it as simple as that? any tips/ideas will be so appreciated!
@mickeybowmeister1944
@mickeybowmeister1944 4 жыл бұрын
If the slab is in a bad state you could consider applying a polythene damp proof membrane over and pouring a fresh 2" concrete topping which can have a aggregate that will polish up beautifully. I worked for Phase IV contractors in Lexington for a while. Contact them.

It looks beautiful, but no storage. Where does your food processor go, your mixer, your stock pots, your toaster, your instant pot, colanders, on and on...any time you see these houses with open shelves they just have a few pretty plates, wine glasses and knick-knacks displayed, but no real kitchen devices. Obviously these people don't cook. And that's fine. But for those of us that do, these kitchens won't work. Everything's not just about how a space looks and photographs, some of us care about how it actually functions. Plus open shelves collect dust. I've had them, I'll never have them again.

I don't get why you would cover that great floor with rugs. They are NOT easy to clean. The polished concrete is easy to clean. The dining room chairs especially should be able to slide on the floor. Pitch the rugs.

This designer is not a cook. The bottom cabinets in the kitchen should be drawers, not having doors at all; they’re much more efficient to use. If she wants to design a better kitchen to cook in, she should do some movement studies. Also, when one cooks, oil and water fly up and coat everything on those open shelves, and coat that macrame mirror frame!!😮 That’d be a nightmare to clean! In my small kitchen, all are drawers except below the sink, and I have no upper shelves or cabinets at all, except around the microwave and refrigerator. I left them as deeper storage; they’re from the 1930s. I have enough storage in my kitchen.
