Andor Episode 10 had a really awesome detail - Kino Loy when starting the insurrection risked it all by staying on the floor. We’ll talk about that and more on today’s Star Wars video.

I also noticed that when Kino tells the other prisoners over the comm that the floors are disabled, it's his counterpart from the night shift who steps out of his cell first to test it. Like Kino, if he was in the military he would be the kind of officer who _leads_ his men, rather than _commands_ them.
@bitchoflivingblah
@bitchoflivingblah Жыл бұрын
And that is the nub, he leads, he's a sergeant, but that's as far as it goes. The executive decisions are made elsewhere. Had Cassa or people like Birnok not being there to plan the escape Kino would still be exhorting his the other prisoners to keep on working. Kino was used by Cassa as a means to an end. This was the purpose of the whole episode. This is Luthen's philosophy. It is to demonstrate the evolution of Cassa's mindset something we see in Rogue One - his ruthlessness and ability to see things through, plan and execute.
@hcxpl1
@hcxpl1 Жыл бұрын
@@bitchoflivingblah I agree with the first half, but saying that Kassa is adopting Luthen's mindset (specially when he hardly knows the guy) seems flawed. First bc it was on Kino's best interest as much as his and the other prisioners, so not simply manipulation and secondly that he thought Kino would benefit as well, he didn't see him as expensive and the moment he realise Kino couldn't swin he tried to help but couldn't. Wheter or not being "soft" like that is good for the rebellion is up to you, but I simply don't see it as being the same as Luthen.
@bitchoflivingblah
@bitchoflivingblah Жыл бұрын
@@hcxpl1 Cassa is a pretty ruthless guy already - he took out Skeen without hesitation, but it's all for himself, the evolution comes when it's for something else other than himself. You don't have to know someone to adopt the same kind of mindset. Luthen has decided that the only way he can live with himself is to battle the Empire with everything he has, anything less is failure, and by doing so he is willing to be as ruthless if not more so than the Empire. Cassa's character is i think evolving this mindset, already ruthless but directing that for a purpose other than himself.
@omegastar19
@omegastar19 Жыл бұрын
@@bitchoflivingblah eh, killing Skeen was a bit ruthless, but also completely logical - when Skeen revealed his plan (and also revealed he had lied about his past) Cassian immediately understood that refusing Skeen’s offer would cause Skeen to turn on him (because Skeen just revealed compromising info that Cassian could use against him), so he simply struck first.
@bitchoflivingblah
@bitchoflivingblah Жыл бұрын
@@omegastar19 Simply put Skeen played his hand too quickly. He needed to be someone where he could force/bribe to carry the credits to that moon he was talking about. I think because Cassa gave off the vibes that he was in it for the money Skeen thought he could be bought, not realising that he has a strong moral sense when it comes to life versus the Empire. Skeen played poker and lost.

Actually, I think Kino went into the escape knowing for a fact that he wasn't getting out - they knew they were at sea so he knew he wasn't going to make it. There’s at least two other cases of foreshadowing that Kino knew that he wasn’t making it out: He mentioned that he would assume that he’s already dead, and just before his speech, he hesitates, as though taking a moment to compose himself upon remembering that the one way out was by swimming. And I like the slight hint of a smile that Serkis gave, as though Kino wanted to say, "I didn't think I'd get this far!"

Kino’s sacrifice ties very nicely into what Luthen said in the same episode: "I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see”. Kino’s development of switching from one mindset into another could have been done to Boba Fett’s character as well. Excellent use of “show not tell.” In BobF, everyone just needed to assume that Boba’s outlook in life changed shortly after escaping the Sarlacc because NDE and NDE does things to your psyche. But we went straight to changed man in BoBF. Yes BoBF was faster paced but for me, largely unsatisfying and less convincing.

I think kino felt the whole mission, to him was suicidal. Once we know he couldn’t swim, it changes everything that lead up to that heart breaking moment. Like when he made the speech on the intercom. He is a true leader but couldn’t put a speech together because he knew the finish line was right there but he wasn’t going to be able to cross it. His line of being already dead was true because it was pretty much he’s damned if he does or damned if he doesn’t. Luckily for everyone and the viewers he’s such a great dude and decided to help his mates instead of trying to shut the whole plan down entirely

unfortunately, I think the ISB are going to eventually trace Andor to this prison and they'll probably interrogate those left behind, including Kino. I read that moment, where Kino is yelling "get on the tables" but doesn't himself, as two things. First, he still doesn't believe the escape is going to work. He really *isn't* leading things, not yet, he's just lending his moral authority to Cassian's plan. At this point, Kino is still very much in a "let's die fighting" state of near-suicide. But also, he isn't actually anywhere near a table, and doesn't really have *time* to get to a table. So those two elements taken together mean he doesn't even bother trying. Obviously anything along the lines of "what is Kino thinking" is going to vary from viewer to viewer, but that was my take. Either way, the look on his face when he realises the floor shorted out and he *isn't* about to die might be the best acting Andy Serkis has ever done. It's just perfect.

I honestly thought this was an odd editing choice or something, I assumed he jumped on one of the tables too given the fact the floor would probably turn on all at once, not layer by layer moving through the entire room for a few seconds? And if he got shocked a bit but survived, I also think they would've shown that

I had missed Kino not getting up on a table. Good catch. They really took a character I did NOT like in his first episode and made him fantastic by his last episode. Now, where’s my Black Series Kino figure, Hasbro?

Very sad that he gor written out at the end of the arc. Great actor, great character. Would have loved to see more of him like joining the rebellion, becomming a leader or something.

Serkis has said that Kino once held a union / shop steward type role before getting sent to prison, so he definitely has a background in leadership, and supporting working people. He became more self centered after going inside He's just come back round to his initial 'power to the people' position via Cassian, and recent events / 'the mistake'.

First time I saw that scene when Kino Loy looks at his feet, then looks up and yells "ATTACK!" he reminded me of Cesar in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Serkis is just perfect for that role.

Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they'll never sit in. This series is achingly beautiful at showing characters who are willing to give up everything to build a better future by fighting the empire.

Thing is, his acting through facial expression and body language is really incredible. His growing fear throughout his appearances on the show is palpable. I’ve not been a fan of his, but I am now.

Another great detail, the design of the pisoners uniform, the orange white pattern, can be found on the design of the X-wings. The rebels are taking the symbols of their imprisonment and fighting the empire with it

He's like a microcosm of Andor himself. His arc. A reflection. Seemingly self-interested to a fault turns to leader in the face of great adversity, ultimately fated to succeed in the larger struggle but doomed to die before seeing the fruits of this successful mission (I assume he drowned or was killed by the guards - he didn't jump, yes? He couldn't swim. Maybe his fate is simply unknown...Serkis could return).

i really do hope that he comes back in season 2 and has a more honourable demise. and also that other person with whom andor escaped and later departed from. ik it is supposed to symbolize that these people were temporary in andor's life who helped forge the rebel in him. but still just giving em a honorable ending would be soo satisfying.

I think it was probably more a case of there not being a lot of room on the tables, and he knew he wasn't getting out, so he saw no sense in taking up space on a table that could go to a guy who could get out.

One of the prisoners actually _did_ get killed by the floor during the riot, as he was standing in just the wrong spot. It seems that the electricity is like a massive wave, starting closest to the lift and advancing to the far side of the room, all within the span of a second or less. So that poor guy got electrocuted before the water could halt the "wave."

I think this is partly because he always knew he should never escape. He never wanted to rebel because he knew he couldn't survive. It wasn't until he realized the truth that he decided he'd rather lead others to freedom and die doing it. He never planned on escaping.
