Eric, I'm a 26 handicap who started golfing 2 years ago. I watched this video earlier today and immediately took it to the range this evening after work. Best I've felt after a range session in a long time. Absolute stripe show. A few hooks but mostly draws with no slices whatsoever. This did more for me than any instructional video on KZfaq has to date. THANK YOU.

@@CogornoGolf Do you have a drill similar for someone who wants to a hit a consistent power fade? I like the fade more as to me it's more forgiving. When I play a draw a miss can be a big hook left.

I gotta say after listening to this it makes so much more sense. I want to go the range but currently nursing an upper back from my bad over the top swing, that I’ve managed into a strong fade.. now I have something new to try because that motion felt more natural after I pulled this damn muscle doing my old natural 😅

Tigers go to shot under pressure is 100% a fade. I think the key isn’t to always hit the picture perfect draw, but to have a shape you can hit consistently and under pressure.

right......but thats tiger----a pro........they learn to hit draw first tho Usually a player will go 1. start golfing......stink......hit slice 2. Continue playing.....learn to hit draw.....get better (break 90, break 80) Keep in mind this is a video about breaking 80.....not shooting under :) 3. Once they own the draw they get into 70's par.....then learn to neutralize draw/hit slight fade to sheet under par

I’ve been golfing for a little over a year now. I have watched a ton of videos (including yours) and I have never been able to hit a draw. I always fade the ball and my miss is a big ol’ slice from right to left (left handed). I saw this video, I just went to the range, and I focused on strong grip, club face down in the takeaway with wrist angles, and arm rotation on the way through. Wow, Eric. I didn’t hit one single fade. Majority were draws with a few hooks and pushes. I’m shocked. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help. I currently shoot in the 90’s, but I have a good feeling I’m about to break 90 real soon now.

This video came along at the exact right time for me. I've been struggling with my game for the past 18 months and I played yesterday and wanted to quit. I came across this yesterday afternoon and watched around 5 times. I went to the range this morning and just concentrated on this alone with an 8 iron. Although i didnt see any draws, my ball flight was holding up against a 2 club left to right cross wind, so I'm positive. By the end of the session i was smoothing 7 irons to a 160 target, so noticed an increase in distance. Like many people i am guilty of watching KZfaq golf tips and trying new things almost weekly, and this has really made my game suffer. Like the man says in the video, concentrate on this for the next 6, 12, 18 24 months. And that is exactly what i plan to do.

Eric, the timing of this video was perfect for me. I have been struggling with my scoring and consistancy this year. I went from an 11 to 13.8. I have increased practicing but struggled with what to focus on. Also been pulling the ball and fading it when I was a drawer of the ball. Now with this video, in one short practice session then off to the course, my draw was back and I was so much more consistant. I shot my lowest round in over a month all from this simple method. But now I know what to work on, during my practice sessions. Thanks so much.

I just started playing summer before last. I have a friend who is pretty good at golf and last weekend he got me doing the keeping the wrist hinged and rotating body until I hit the ball. When I went to the other evening to hit. I was jacked up. Thanks guys for bringing this up. I’m going to get that out of my head and go with your teaching. Thanks.

I’m scratch now, but I went through the same “progression” as everyone else. I naturally started off slicing. Horrible grip. Horrible path. Lots of things wrong. I gradually got my scores down into the eighties, by just simply getting better with “strike”, and with my chipping n putting. However, this was pretty much a dead end road, until I learned how to draw the ball. I changed my grip, and path, and at first, I actually fought a hook. I could occasionally shoot in the seventies on a good day, if I sorta tamed the hook a little. I started to then understand more about path, and face. I learned to work the ball either direction, and with a solid short game, started shooting seventies pretty often. It was when I could hit a 10 yard draw, OR a 10 yard fade, and “strike” was almost a non-issue, when my game changed forever. He’s so correct about “grip” being a VERY key factor. Listen to this man. He will get you there. I shot even par 72 yesterday, with a very average approach shot day. The key to scratch is STRIKE. I only hit 3-4 slightly thin irons shots, and only 1 low runner with driver. However, all of them was within 80% of my intended distance(very playable). Everything else was pretty solid. To me…. Strike is king! You absolutely can’t chunk, or skull your way around the golf course.

This is where I'm at, stuck in the mid-high 70s - low 80s mostly because of short game and occasional high 80s because of inconsistency off the tee with a hook. Normal flight is a slight 3 yard draw but when I lose control of it it's gone left. I can't even think about hitting a ball left to right anymore. What changes did you make to control your draw so you wouldn't hook and could actually hit a fade when necessary? Thanks.
@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 11 ай бұрын
@@Fab5foLyfe I will tell you how I work the ball left to right now…. I set up a little closer to the ball. This steepens my swing some, and let’s me swing slightly out to in. I’ll turn my hips, and shoulders a little harder from the top. This kicks the club out a little, so I don’t get stuck. But, the key for me is right side bend through impact. This stabilizes the face. The face has to be slightly open to the path to produce a left to right shape. Face controls start direction, and path controls side spin.

I find the best place to work on this, is on the trackman at an indoor golf centre. It's easy to hit it left curving left, and right curving right. But right curving left is harder, and I find requires an enhanced sense of timing and softer arms. Helps I think to aim the clubface straight and swing on a line slightly right of the target. This is the lesson we should all aspire to!

I’m an 8-10 handicap and I agree with everything in the video. It is great advice. I’m blessed to be able to shape my shots exceptionally well and it is my short game and sometimes putting that gets me! I don’t love tip 2 about the flattening the wrists to close the club face to the line. I have always found thinking about wrists is tough in the golf swing. I had a pro friend of mine give me a great tip to accomplish the same thing but easier to execute. “Knuckles down” He called it. Take the club away with the handle of the club facing the target as it comes back (that insures you don’t take it to the inside and open the club face) and as you get back past the right foot get the feeling of turning knuckles (left knuckle for right handed golfer) downward just a bit. The handle pointing at the target and the slight knuckles down keeps everything on line as long as the first two tips Eric mentions are strictly adhered to, proper grip and rotating the arms. I’ve found I automatically rotate my arms if I just finish like Eric does or the top of my right hand over my left and wrapped around my shoulders so I know I finish my swing with belt buckle left of target. “Hold it like a pro” On the finish!

Eric, I've been watching your videos (from afar) for a year or so. This one finally hit home. Had to watch this video at least 3-4 times, before I finally got it. I'm almost 69, been a mid to low 20 handicapper for all too long, have physical issues (2 knee replacements, arthritis, neuropathy in my feet)...yeah I'm a bit of a hot mess. Ha. Long story short...I took your 3 principles out to the driving range today and worked on them through my basket of 100 golf balls. Don't think I've ever hit the golf ball as well in my entire life. Didn't hit a slice or even a remote fade the entire bucket. All were draws and some big hooks 20 yards left...but you said that was a good "miss" and so I was cool with it. This tended to disappear as I hit my way through the bucket...must have been self adjusting in a good way. In general, my shots had good power behind them and unlike anything I've ever hit recently. My normal 7 iron is a 140 yd shot...today more like 165 which is great for my age bracket and handicap range. I even tried to use these same principals (strong grip, closing the club face on the way back, and releasing the club face coming through the ball) with my driver with impressive results. Mostly straight to drawing drives in the 230-250 yd range. On the white tees, this will really work well for me. Thanks for you great presentations, clear descriptions of what you are trying to accomplish, and practice drills. You are a great teacher and great fun to watch and listen too. BTW...wish I had such a balanced and beautiful swing as yours. I'll just have to be happy with the difference you've already made in mine.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play a lot with it due to all the rain, but I at the range, I am hitting the ball solidly and compressing the ball more than I have. I have to finish high to avoid hooking it, but I am amazed at what the counterclockwise left wrist during the back swing is doing to my consistency. My miss is a push right, but so far, that is not an issue with this change. Did I read that you are in FL this winter (2024)? Id love to get an in person tune up. Thanks much! BIll

Eric, thanks again for this super straightforward, actionable advice. I've commented before and I'm sure you read and recall every post :), but I'm a recovering baseball player who has only been committed to golf for a couple of years now. Struggling to train my body to swing in to out instead of the disastrous over the top I started with. This kind of drill and explanation is so helpful for someone like me, and I've been working on it for several weeks. I'm having success with my short to mid-irons, but still struggling with hybrids and definitely driver. I'm wondering if you could show us a similar or even the same drill but using a driver instead. The difference in setup and attack angle screw me up big time. I know it's the same concept, but I think the driver swing is more difficult to deal with for an amateur like me. If not, no worries. I just feel like a driver-focused video would be helpful to your fans out there. Thanks much! BTW - I'll be signing up for your online site soon.

Another piece not mentioned in this video is angle of attack. A flatter plane in your delivery will also produce a draw bias due to the loft of the club being turned. I recommend feeling like you are hitting a baseball with your driver, a horizontal feeling swing, around your body, rather than a vertical swing thought.

Great video explaining the 3 things to close the face, but please do a video specifically on how to get the in to out swing path. AMG golf has some great videos on that, but most online instructors just say "swing in to out" with no drills or in depth explanation. That is the Achilles heel of 95% of amateur golfers. For the many people that watch your channel, that would be a big help to them. Thanks!

Glad you mentioned the trainer at the end. I was a personal trainer and athletic performance coach for over 20 years. Athletes always got it and PT clients needed a lot of persuading…Athletes didn’t care if I NEVER changed anything-they knew it was what they needed and we only changed protocol when it was necessary to do so. PT clients we had to “keep them interested” and constantly change things. Annoying. Anyways, i think golfers have the same short attention span as the soccer moms and change drills and techniques long before the drill had a chance to imprint anything meaningful. tiger, Rory, Rham…all STILL do the same drills they did 5, even 10 years ago. YOU don’t need variety. It’s a myth.

Hey Michael! I would just give up that fear :) But if you want to square the face other ways I go through that in detail in video below. Hi Eric. I have noticed in Viktor Hovland and even more so in John Rahm that their wrists are bin their downswings. Yet with both of these players their "go-to" shot, especially with driver, is a power fade. How are they accomplishing this with such bowed wrist positions?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 7 ай бұрын
Hey Stephen! 1. They get their path LEFT enough of the club face at impact to create the right curve 2. They do this with A LOT of ROTATION and SIDE BEND of their body 3. Both ROTATION and SIDE BEND make the path more left 4. They also have a quite "passive" release pattern to not get the face closed to path

"Your timing stinks already." 😂 unfortunately true. Last year, I struggled with the overdraw, or a small pull hook at times. Worked hard to correct-weakened the grip slightly, held off the release a bit. Now I struggle with a bit of a right miss...a small push with a bit of a fade bias. One of these days I'll land in the middle...feels like I'm one small tweak away.

A question for you would be why do most tour players favor a fade over a draw. Now I know they can bend it both ways on command but a lot of them prefer a fade over a draw and it’s typically because it will generate more spin and more control. I know they are elite level golfers so comparing to a mature golfers is like apples to oranges but why don’t more coaches teach students to play that pull cut or small fade. Appreciate your videos man thanks for all u do.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 11 ай бұрын
For sure! Most golfers at the Elite level follow a similar process/learning curve They first start playing and hit a slice As they get better they learn to fix slice and hit a draw As they get GREAt they learn to ease down the draw and hit it pretty straight or slight cut. Thats also why this videos was about my getting into 70s and not pro level....as you know most players in 80s and 90s need this first (learn to draw) Once you get to that elite level the baby cut usually produces the best results....the MISSES are much better. The slight adjustments in swing mechanics needed to produce that are in line with more consistent strikes, better face control, smaller misses etc. Perhaps a full video to explain HOW and WHY in the future

Eric... why not just set your wrist how it will be at impact before you start your back swing... then your wrist is set ... then all you hav eto do is bring the club back to square... I am sure that there is a reason not to do this but I would welcome your thoughts??
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 ай бұрын
That is an option! Its never quite that simple :) but you could go more that route. Of course when you add the vertical wrist hinge component in backswing (radial deviation) that will also change the wrist angle.....so we need to make up for that on the way down as the wrist unhinges. The face will automatically have some "opening" to the swing plane in the backswing/early downswing so we need to off set that. Thats the main reason we see 90% of golfers miss weak right :)
