Just saw them live last night. He was running around stage with a ton of energy, and providing insane backing vocals. He not only learned bass, he got completely comfortable with it. An amazingly talented musician, and clearly a quick learner. Looks like he's been playing bass for most of his life

I love getting reminded that Lorna Shore is extremely talented. Someone in the comments of the playthrough said something along the lines of "Michael is a drummer that can fill for Austin and a bassist that can keep up with Adam's riffs". And it wasn't until recently that I found out that he plays drums too. He's seriously underrated in lorna shore imho. I just wish you could hear the bass more in the pain remains album.

Completely agree on the comment of thump and pop on bass. It’s a cool technique and one that I’ve never quite mastered. BUT this kind of playing is what I’m more impressed with, and especially if it’s accomplished with finger picking.

I love the playthroughs, because in the wall of sound you can't identify the bass propperly. This is so much better than I expected it to be.

I agree that playing one instrument helps you learn a second instrument. I play a bunch of instruments and when I first started, I started learning two instruments almost back to back. One would help me with the other. And nowadays, I can usually manage to make "music" with any instrument I pick up, even if I don't play it, because I play 5 different stringed instrument, drums, keyboard, and I do various vocals. This has helped not only make it easier to pick up a new instruemtn and star tplaying, but it also has made it easier to be "sharp" on each individual instruemt that I currently know and play, and writing music is easier now because i have an understanding of any given instrument that's going to be in the song and how instruments interact with one another. PLus, a solid understanding of drums and percussion can be transposed to stringed instrumetns like bass and guitar which increases the complexity and how "interesting" a musical piece can be. I recommended to ALL my musicians friends to learn at least ONE other instrument since I had been playing about a year, but unfortunately, very few poeple have taken that advice, and you can hear the difference between a "one instrument" player/writer and a multi-instrument player and writer in most cases.

So he wasn't using his pinky to mute strings, he was using as an anchor for muscle memory to hit the right strings. I've seen a lot of new and very experienced guitarists and bassists do this. It seems to work very well for him so what works works!

This reminded me of the bass play-through for Unleash the Archers' Soulbound, which is also a lot of fun to watch, plus they also overlayed musical notation, which is something I enjoy watching as a classically-trained musician. I hope you'll checkout that Soulbound video, if you haven't yet already. I also recommend Rob van der Loo's bass play-through videos for a couple of EPICA's songs, although I don't remember his bass lines matching the guitar parts quite as closely as in this and the Soulbound videos. Still, I think they're fun to watch, being a fan of the mighty bass.

I'm not surprised. Bass & drums are *very* connected to each other. When he's playing bass, he's probably thinking with his drummer brain.

My favorite bassist is Misa from Band-Maid. She plays Orange amps and it always sounds awesome. Her technique is wild too as she can flip from pick, hybrid and slap seamlessly. Her tone cuts through the mix so well too. Idk who their live engineer is but they always sound solid. If you’ve never seen it heard her play might be worth checking out.

Man, i love hearing different vocal technics and drummers playing different songs, but do you know what i love even more? The freaking BASSISTS playing metal songs! And this right here is just incredible! Now, i'am not a musician. I don't even know how to not just play any music instruments, i even have no idea how to hold them. But, i instantly fall in love with a good or incredible metal song when i hear one. And when i get to understand the lyrics, it makes me cry because how good it is and how life impactful it is. Because, when i first time discovered a metal genre and it's subgenres, i instantly understood that, this is it! This is the music that i looked for. And since then, no other music matters for me than metal. And, i might look like a regular guy from the middle of nowhere, but inside, i look like a devil that loves heavy music.

Had a retired pro drummer tell me I play bass like a drummer the first time we played together at a large church. He meant it as a compliment. At that time, I had been playing bass for just 3 years, but had 30 years of drumming experience before then. One of the first lessons I give to bass players is an overview of a drum set and getting them to learn a basic beat. That first lesson will help put into context the role of the bass guitar.

I haven´t actually heard Lorna Shore before but have to check them out after this, that is some serious musicianship.

As mainly a guitarist and drummer, I'm blown away by Lorna's guitars and drums and I know I will just never be able to play it (esp. the solo guitar), but I'm pretty sure I could play this on bass. I don't have a bass, but back in our teenage band, where I played drums, I sometimes took our bassist's bass during his smoking break and then played As Blood Runs Black lead riffs together with our guitarist. Our bassist's dad, who was visiting, just stared, eyes wide open 😂. I think going from lead guitar to bass, you just have a huge advantage... I need to get myself a bass now... So I can finally jam along to Lorna Shore without wanting to quit music altogether 😂

The last time I saw them with parkway drive he was playing the drums. Austin had medical issues with his back. Mind-blowing how amazing he played the drums🤯

I'm a drummer that learned bass, then guitar, then vocals, then keys, plus I'm old ! it is possible to learn new tricks even at 56 \m/

In my opinion, he uses the little finger to keep his position over the strings. Since he slides over the strings in some situations. If he wanted to mute the strings with the little finger, he wouldn't do that. I myself play the bass only with my fingers. But now I want to start playing with a plectrum.I was advised by some colleagues to "hook" the little finger under the lowest string to gain stability and a firm position.

In my own bass playing of all techniques (not very well). I can tell you playing with a pick saves so much time in learning songs. I didn't use a pick for years and decided to soley to get the tone correct for a tool song I was going to be playing live. It made playing the song 1000x easier. Leaning to pick takes very little time relative to fingerstyle or slap. I wouldn't call it inferior, just another tool for a different sound. But it definitely makes the transition from another instrument easier. It gets real fun when you swap techniques mid song.

Having taking the time to learn this on bass all i can say is he's a monster on it

Ay, im from new jeresy, and ive never met lorna shore, idk how. But that is a bad ass bass player right there.

There is a country group tht is 2 piece . Drummer also plays bass at the same time while guitar player also plays steel and keyboards but not at the same time . Really impressive .

And the guy sounds fantastic. It IS obvious that he's a seasoned MUSICIAN, but he's also NEW to bass. A few telltale signs that he's new to the instrument still is HOW he's fretting some of the notes, and how his fingers sometimes bunch up in the same place, that's osmething that newer bass players do, (nothing wrong with it, but its a "new guy" move) also his dynamics are very VERY monotonous, also a telltale sign of a new-ish player, he's not quite got the confidence to trust his ability to play dynamically, for fear the quieter passages might get lost. There's also a "general purpose body tension" in his entire body, he's very rigid... He's not TENSE in his playing, but he's not relaxed enough to be comfortable. His playing and posture is that of a person who senses their instructor is watching and might call them out at any second, OR, if not that, he's focused so much on making sure his technique and posture is correct that he's got that nervous rigidity to his approach. Sounds great though, and this is because he's an established musician who's proven himself to himself, so he DOES have some confidence, but he doesn't have tons of experience yet and there are signs of it. Give this guy about 1 more year from the time this was recorded and he'll look and act like he's been playing for 50 years.

The deeper you get into music details and the more you learn about Lorna Shore you start respecting them more and more.

His picking technique looks like the John Petrucci pivot picking technique. He is using his pinky to stabilize his picking hand by basically holding on to a higher string or the pickup edge. Very efficient and precise technique and he has a great left hand too.

Many years ago while in my most deepest hunt of percussion from all around the world plus the story of it's instruments, in a studio I heard the most amazing rhythm, drawn to it I walked into a sound room and would you guess it... It was coming from a bass guitar. This dude was the most talented I've ever seen. The thumps smacks plucks bends quiet then quadruplets pfffff Trust me, he was the best.

66Samus is an insane drummer that is also a great guitarist and bassist. He filled in on bass for Goatwhore (not as demanding as Lorna Shore mind you) for like a tour at a moments notice because they needed one.

Lorna Shore is easily in my top 20 favorite metal bands ever and probably my number one favorite of the new(er) extreme metal bands. These guys are just as talented as Job For A Cowboy. i show LS to anyone I think may like them. i'm 38 and have been playing drums in/listening to hardcore, death metal, metalcore, and punk bands for 25 years now. Lorna Shore's drummer Austin is better at drums than I am. what a fucking beast 😎 mike is equally a beast on bass... The whole band is really a showpiece in their current lineup. i hope they stay that way. seem like great kids, too.

the reason for holding a pick like that is so your index finger knuckle stays locked in place for drill picking. is a very common thing you kind of naturaly adapt to different grips when you get up to certain speeds. I am currently speed picking accurately at around 260bpm. lorna shore guitarist adam can do it up to 280. lol. it's kind of crazy. I have a feeling he's doing 8th note triplets tho and not 16th notes. at that speed and in their mix it is hard to tell. i'd love to see an interview with him about his speed playing and how to practice to get faster, i have my own methods, but i'd love to hear his

Mikes been good friends with the guys since university I believe. I’ve never had any guitar lessons but started as a singer really young, picked up drums at 11, then bought a guitar at 16. Parents just saw it all as a good outlet for me so was pushed to arts. Creative people will naturally pick things up faster especially constantly being exposed to it, Tim Henson’s actually pretty decent at drums these days

I was a drummer for 15 years and later switched to guitar/bass. Although I'm not as technically sound as this bass player, the bands I played bass in always remarked how tight and locked in I was able to get with our drummers. I guess it comes naturally after being the "time keeper" of a band for so long. As we all know drummers and bassists are usually the hardest people to find, so I would encourage anyone who can to be a "dual musician" like this! It definitely helps your opportunities as a musician and the tightness of the band as well.

I use medium picks to play my bass. I can still do the heavy parts but the more intricate parts with no problem. I hold my pick like a guitar pick instead of a bass pick. I do try and learn to use thick bass picks but they don't hold up to what I play and how I play

I always say if I was ever in a metal band I’d play bass. Bass Players along with Drummers often go unlooked. I’d be ok with that. Bass and Drums are the unsung hero’s, the mold that brings it all together. 💯

As a BASS player of more than 15 years, I would say that its fun to make bass look cool, but thats not the purpose of the instrument! Victor Wooten said it best. Its not about how good I can sound, but how good i can make the rest of the band sound!

Drummers can be good at almost anything. Not every other instrumentalist can be a good Drummer though, different foundations give drummers a HUGE leg up when learning other instruments.

I don't quite understand being from the UK why certain states get made fun of, I get it with Alabama. However when I first heard of Iowa it was because of Slipknot or maybe an episode of TBBT and New Jersey as a lot of the great bands/musicians are from there like Lorna Shore, Bruce Springsteen, Jay Weinberg, the misfits and I think Tom Barber is from there.

He's fucking incredible!! I'm a drummer who started playing bass too, and it's alot like playing the drums rhythmically I can't shred like this monster does, but I play with my fingers and I do notes and scales like I would frame out a drum roll mathematically so I could end up on the one to to stay in the pocket.. I mess around with guitar a little bit but the feel is different and it's a different mindset but mostly I don't like using a pick it takes away the percussive element I like the lower spectrum of sound!

I feel like it'd be easier for a drummer to learn bass than a bassist to learn drums right? I'm an okay guitarist and bass player and my mate tried teaching me drums for a month and it was completely awful. My brain understands co-ordinating 2 limbs pretty well. 4 is just insane. So I feel someone who can coordinate 4 would have a very easy time coordinating 2? Also good spot on holding the pick, dunno if its just him but I hold it similarly, it does help a bit with muting, but mostly its more comfortable/natural for me personally.

Hopefully in new material we actually get to hear his playing, the recent mixes are not great with guitar leads and drums extremely high in the mix, and riffs sometimes get buried along with will’s high screams, then the lows are super loud along with the symphonics and there are whole rhythm guitar sections that i had no clue existed until i watched playthroughs or saw a live studio session.

He didn't just learn bass, he would have been playing for years. You don't get that finger control without ridiculous amounts of practice.

I know that this is late and someone probably said this or you found out what he uses. But personally as an attempted bass player cause I suck 😂 I would assume hr uses .80 mm I like that thickness and the wider picks by clayton

Wow, I knew that I'm not very talented, but now I know that I'm the complete opposite of talented in comparison 😅 I mean.... I've seen Billy Sheehan and Joey DeMaio play solos live, but they didn't just learn to play bass a few years ago.

A drummer could become a bass player but a bass player could never just pick up drumming. Drumming is a totally different physical sport than bass or guitar. Every guy has maturbated with their right hand hand, but very few have done it with both hands and both feet at the same time.

Fun fact: he do 2nd vocals live sometimes.

Being a drummer makes you a better bassist and both make you a better guitar player.

As far as him being better than most established bassists, its because bassists tend to (generally) just not be motivated to better themselves like many other instrument players because they kind of hide in the mix, so they get the spotlight and accolades the rest of the band gets, but without the scrutiny, pressure, or "solo time" typically where active, ferocious critique can happen at any time, so unfortunately bass tends to attract the "lazier" musicians. Fight me.

I always wonder how bands and people tune so low into G. My bass only tunes down to A maybe G# but can’t go any lower. Any answers?

This video, along with Dean Lamb's (guitarist of Archspire) video "4 Levels of Death Metal" with Lorna Shore's guitarist Adam De Micco, really just solidifies the one thing that stops me from liking Lorna Shore: The production. On paper I should love this band; Blackened symphonic deathcore band that doesn't rely entirely on just chugging. But I can't enjoy any of it, because the production is truly godawful. Everything is so dry and overly compressed, that even with good headphones and the volume turned up, you can barely make out any of the instruments. It all gets drowned out by the orchestra/synth and the vocals. And it makes me so sad, because there are so many other bands out there that play instrumentally and vocally dense music, that also have good production to back it up; Fleshgod Apocalypse, Ne Obliviscaris, Beyond Creation, Xerath, Cattle Decapitation, Belzebubs. Hell, even Infant Annihilator can produce better audio quality from their bedroom.
