This easy guide to making a fleece rug is perfect for your home!
#howtomakeawetfeltedrug #gudetosheepskinrugmaking #felting
Our easy guide to making a fleece rug.
Follow this straightforward guide to making your own wet felted fleece rug. Sometimes referred to as a vegan sheepskin rug.
It takes a couple of hours but you get a beautiful rug at the end of the process. This one gets walked on every day and is still going strong many months after making it. Tough, cosy, warm, environmentally friendly beautiful and functional, what more could you want from a rug.
In this video we use white English tops purchased from www.worldofwool.co.uk for the backing and our own fleece for the rug.
No sheep were harmed in the making of this video and Edith has grown another beautiful thick fleece ready for next time.
A wet felted sheepskin rug is a beautiful and cozy addition to any room. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make one yourself!
Materials:
-Sheepskin
-Soap
-Water
-Large basin or sink
-Towel
Instructions:
Soak the sheepskin in warm water and soap for 10 minutes.
Rub the sheepskin together to create friction, which will help the fibers to interlock and form felt.
Rinse the sheepskin in clean water until the water runs clear.
Roll the sheepskin up in a towel to remove excess water.
Place the sheepskin on a flat surface and stretch it out to the desired size.
Use a spray bottle to mist the sheepskin with water and let it dry.
Repeat steps 2-6 until the felt is the desired thickness.
Once the rug is fully felted, trim the edges to create a neat and even shape.
And there you have it! Your own handmade wet felted sheepskin rug, perfect for adding warmth and texture to any room in your home. Enjoy!

Our video journal of the trials and tribulations of daily life down the field.
We have a couple of kunekune pigs (originally from New Zealand) for rotavating and clearing up our land, a starter flock of rare breed sheep, Leicester Longwool ewes which we are keeping for their wool and meat, and a young Herdwick tup. A small flock of hens including some rescued battery hens to supply us with fresh free range eggs.
We also have a couple of native breed ponies which we hope to learn to ride and drive.
We hope to grow our own vegetables, fruit and flowers and are trying to be as self-sufficient and organic as we possibly can.
Everything down the field other than the perimeter fencing is made from something we have repurposed, recycled or reused.
We have an Ashford spinning wheel and our learning to spin yarn with which we can then crochet or knit things from it.
When not busy pottering and coming up with ingenious solutions to everyday problems Dave trains his dogs

If you fancy a beautiful homemade inexpensive sheepskin rug, follow our easy step by step guide. You'll need a fleece, some wool tops, some washing up liquid , old net curtain, string, a plastic sheet, hot water, broom handle, and a couple of hours.

That is an interesting cross. Was it an oops or planned. I had a churro ewe decide to mate with a Cotswold ram. Not my choice as churro sheep are a small breed. Love the technical term squidge Will use it in future. The rug is beautiful. Good afternoon. Hope you are having a nice Spring. Good luck with your lambing. Looking forward to lamb videos.

This is amazing, did you wash the fleece at all before you started?
@callumglass
@callumglass 27 күн бұрын
You don't wash prior, as it is a loose fleece. It'd felt and mix upside with right side up. It'd be a mess. Most of a fleece gets washed during the felting process, hence the tonne of wash liquid to start and during. Once you know you've nailed the felting and the fleece is a gooden. You can then wash it in a big trug, or bath tub. Then it's finally dry time. I make them for a living, they're hard work but worth it. Good luck! - Sheepfloof

How much top should I order for the under carriage of the rug?

Very cool! You only roll it one way and that was enough for felting?

who did the shearing? very huge piece. is it possible to put smaller pieces together if only cut side is up? thanks, love your channel.

Hi, we had a professional shearer in last year, I did it this year.... we will be getting a professional shearer in next year lol. I would think its eminently possible to join smaller pieces together as it will all be "stuck" together in the felting process. Key word is "think", give it a go and let us know how you got on.

I’ve a raw Leicester Longwool fleece I’d love to turn into a rug, but I’m afraid I’ll felt the curly locks into each other by mistake. How come the tips of yours stayed so separated? That rug is beautiful!

Ensure the cut side is up, (buts) felt with the roving ensuring that it only comes into contact with the buts. Good luck.

Hi Jane, great tutorial thank you so much. I'm going to have a go using a fleece I've been given but I'm wondering how much of the English tops to order? Alternatively, could I make my own from another (not so good) fleece? Any tips are much appreciated. thanks, Leslie 🙂

Hi Leslie, Jane has replied to you twice, but it hasn't for some reason made it here, I have no idea why. Regarding the tops, we ordered about a kilograms from World of wool (English 56 I think) and did 2 rugs with it easily.
