K6ARK took tiny and made it big, but still portable!
I was honored to receive a sample of a concept Adam is working on. In the future, I will be providing a build video for both this and the 20w EFHW kit from K6ARK.
This kit was easy to build and uses the same concepts as his other EFHW kits available at Amazon.com - amzn.to/39NmUbS (All links provided through Amazon.com are affiliate links)
For this build, I used a T140-43 torroid: amzn.to/3OmcQFF (7.99) or www.jpmsupply.com/Toroid-Core... (2.69 plus shipping) or
JPM on ebay - www.ebay.com/itm/Toroid-Core-... (2.89 plus 4.70 shipping)
and a 3KV 100PF SMD capacitor or a regular 1KV-3KV capacitor will work if you do not want to fuss with SMD - .

The antenna wire used was BNTECH GO 26AWG . I used around 65 feet for my EFHW.- amzn.to/3QHrYzb
Finally, the magnet wire I used was BNTECH GO 20AWG - amzn.to/3xLIxkY
Testing this on SSB, I did not have any issues operating at 100W . The type of contacts I was making were quick POTA style contacts.
What do you think of this potential product by K6ARK?
NOTES:
I spoke with Adam after testing: he mentioned the possibility of adding a compensation coil:
""Get it resonant on 40m with extra wire folded back on itself, then check 20, 15, 10. If 20, 15 and 10 are above the bands, a coil at about 6ft from the feed point will help. 10-12 turns on a 3/4 inch form (I use black plastic drip tubing in my kits). You'll have to lengthen the wire slightly to get it back into resonance on 40m, but then 20, 15, and 10 should have the dip right in the bands"
This was a fun kit to build and I will be excited to see where K6ARK takes this.

This right here. I have plenty of toroids, magnet wire, heat shrink and 239's. That would take some of the pressure off of Adam assembling the whole kit.

Great Video, I'm glad Adam mentioned the Compensation coil. Lots of great info about this from Steve Ellington's video's on the EFHW. I would definitely buy a kit from Adam if he made it available. His PCB is a great innovation.

Yes I would buy kit, or any iteration of a kit, even if it was just the PCB board and a list of other materials to buy. I've already bought six of Adams 5 Watt and 20 watt kids and have built both nfed halfway and in-fed random wire. They've all worked beautifully!

I need another EFHW like I need another hole in my head....but I'd buy/build one of these in a heartbeat for the form factor alone. I've built Adam's 20W version and it's value for me is in its intelligent design. Great video on your part, by the way.

Adam's EFRW and 3 element yagi have helped me with plenty of contacts. For some reason I have trouble tuning the EFHW but I will buy all the parts in anticipation of a 100W EFHW.

I built Adam’s 20/30/40 meter ultralight before he released his kit. Love it! Now for a 100W version! I’d much rather build it from a kit from Adam! I already bought two of the QRP kits….

Nice antenna. Nice video. Since the center pin of the SO 239 comes apart with heat, before soldering, attach a PL 259 to it for a heat sink. Barry, KU3X

Thanks for the video, dude! If you want to have better efficiency on the lower bands, use 3 instead of 2 primary windings. Owen Duffy has a handy calculator for this and much more. If you're interested in more resonant bands, I wrote a document that shows a solution for a 20m long 7-band EFHW with one switchable coil. Have fun while experimenting, 73 de HB9EAJ, Stephan

Downloaded the document a few days ago and I have nothing but praise. I've used EFHW for many years both at home and out in the field and there are many variables to making and setting up and I guess you have to decide what's best for your operating. In general I use a 10 meter mast and mount vertically, however some recommend as Stephen does, mounting the UNUN at least ½ meter above ground. I agree, but that makes it a little impractical for my own personal field use for 20 meters and above using single wire resonant lengths. My challenge is to make something practical for 40 and above out in the field. The great thing about our hobby is that every day is a learning day and grateful to hams such as Stephen in producing such a useful article. 73 de M0AZE Mike

That may be good. I just got the EFHW kit from ARRL. It much larger and heavier. But I don't do SOTA, so it doesn't matter that much to me. At 75 I don't think I will start SOTA. But I will send this video to some younger friends that this should be something that they may like. That would be good for POTA and ARES.

Certainly if Adam offers it, I would go for it. A board and a BOM would also be interesting. But I would also consider going from scratch if Adam isn't into it. I'm guessing that cooling is better than the plastic box versions most of us already have, but I don't know what the R value of shrink wrap is (I'd probably go with white).

ghreat video 2 quick questions if I may how long is cabel originally (at your preferencess - when you measurewd with analyzer)? also when the antenna was in a sloper configuration did you run a coax to the transformer? or simply had it at radio (like the smaller version)? great video

One turn on the primary is nuts, though. That's only 78 ohms of inductive reactance in the winding on 20m, which is way less than the 5x rule of thumb. You should be targeting at least 250 ohms on the lowest band. That's 3T on an FT140-43. You'll suffer worse coupling and reduced efficiency with only 1T. When I made my most recent one, I actually built it on a BN-43-3312 binocular toroid. One turn on that is 312 ohms at 40m -- by using that low primary turn count, I was able to avoid the need for any compensating capacitor due to far lower leakage inductance. I wonder if a BN-43-7051 would have sufficient thermal properties for 100W?

I'm sorry, maybe there was confusion.... I used a 2 to 14 turn ratio which reduces to 1:7 ... 7X7 = 49. I'm definitely not using one turn.

I'm concern about 100W on FT140-43 especially with 14:2 turns. I made such transformer and its efficiency was around 70-75% at best. 21:3 turns efficiency is about 85-90%. Have you done some more extensive testing @100W and checked temperature of the core?

I have not yet. I'm waiting for some updated boards to arrive and then will test the efficiency and extensively test it. I plan on having longer conversations and running ft8 to get a better idea of the maximum power before reaching saturation. It will probably be about a week or two. During the time, I'm planning on winding two up, one with 3 turns on the primary and one with two, to get a better idea, understanding. I'll definitely keep you posted. Thank you for asking

Packetenna EFHW antennas are rated 100w and the core looks smaller than a 140, I push 45watts on FT8 through 30 feets of RG58 and I don't have any Issues. I'm probably at the limit. It might not be a 43 core on the Packtenna, it might be something more efficient.

Without much testing other than Field Day operating, I would suggest that 100w is fine for lower duty cycle operation (25% or less TX) and 50w should be reasonable for 50% duty cycle modes like FT8. Another option for 100w operation would be to stack a couple of FT140-43 toroids.

I haven't had any issues, more testing will resume shortly, but I believe it's fine for ssb use.

Since being a prototype,a larger core was added. I tested it on ft8 for two hours at 85-90w (I believe, I have that information somewhere), and the core wasn't warm. But yes, the original version in this video had a t140-43. Thanks for watching

Why the hell is everyone using Type 43 on HF antennas??? that type is rated typically for 25MHz to 300MHz!!! Type 31 toroid is probably much better for the HF bands!!!

How are the comparisons on type 43 vs type 31 between 20mhz - 30mhz? Maybe it's something I will look into if they are more efficient.
