When your forest is at the minimum basal area for trees and you get a windstorm, hold on. In today's video you'll see exactly why forests are even more susceptible to wind damage the closer you get to that minimum basal area for the forest stand. Unfortunately for me, ever since a big storm went through and reduced the number of trees below this value, I have trees falling nearly every day. Guess that means my chainsaw will be busy as I continue to utilize the down trees for my sawmill while keeping my trails clear.

good morning Sandy like i was saying you never stop cutting trees down because of the or diseases it is a never ending battle. I am going to suggest a little something i don't know the topography of your land but see if there isn't a way to open a little tranche from the lowest place to exit somewhere or event with the mini excavator dig a small pound in the lowest part that will also give you a little extra dirt for yourself i know it is not easy of a project but it would help for a better forest and your trail well have a great day
@sawingwithsandy

It may be out of view in this angle but not too far from this area there's a creek which helps keep things flowing. Like you said though, a nice ditch to help the water funnel down to the creek would be helpful

Afternoon Sandy, we have a lot of hot dry and high humidity, (105 some days) and afternoon showers that make more humidity. I agree with another comment about a dozer. that might be worth it. Looking at that section of forest I see a lot of pulp wood doesn't bring much and its messy but could be an option to think about. Have a good rest and 2 sludge's you deserve it. Cheers!
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 23 күн бұрын
Thanks John. My main issue in this area is there’s a lot of springs so the ground is very wet. I’m not too familiar with group pressure when using dozers but if it didn’t sink in too bad that sounds like a great option
@robertwazniak9495
@robertwazniak9495 23 күн бұрын
@@sawingwithsandya dozer purchase would be a waste of resources but a weeks rental might be good. They make low ground pressure versions that can almost walk on water. Opening up that part of the forest could help give Ma Nature a head start on reclaiming the land. Looks to me that someone planted that area with the wrong species and nature is trying to correct the problem on her own.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 23 күн бұрын
Thanks for the details about the dozers. Would be neat to try one here. With the exception of the red pine forest, all the trees here are planted naturally

If you want really solid trails, I can highly recommend surfacing them with crushed concrete. Once that stuff has been packed down a bit, it lasts a really long time. Yeah it sucks once a conifer stand has been open up by windfall. Then it seems the ball just keeps rolling. Is there any places to plant "stabilization-belts" of deep-rooted trees on your land? Not sure what species are native to your area for the wet spots. Where I live, red alder, sitka-spruce, poplar & willow usually thrive on the wet areas of my forest. Take care.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 23 күн бұрын
Good question Brian. In this stand where the shallow-rooted balsam fir are breaking off I find the spruce are coming in quick. May be hard pressed for me to find good hardwood species to grow well here but slow but surely I"m sure something will take hold. The alders come in quick here ask well. Hope all is well with you and thanks again for watching

Hi Phil. I don’t know exactly how long this stand has been in tact. The large white pines likely are second growth trees so probably 80+ years old but the smaller trees likely 30-45 years I’d imagine

Hello Sandy. Do you think there is enough wood in the one that you said was soft on the edge for a 6x6 or 8x8? I think the Baumalight would do great with a grapple on it. The first one you cut that was really long, I would pull it, what looked like downhill, and then pull it out from the other end. The downside to that is possibly needing two machines seeing how the trail is narrow. The length would be determined by how much the mill could cut. That is if you intended in cutting it all. It could be part of a bridge. you know and we may find out next time. Have good days!

It's too bad you don't have a dozer blade to go on the mini-skidsteer. Pushing those logs and branches, only to see them spring back... "Welcome to the Law of the Coefficient of Restitution!" (That's humor... something only a traffic accident reconstructionist would understand). Have you got any place handy, where you could rent a bulldozer for a day or two? Something with the power to grade and clean all your trails, and push the debris deep into the forest? It might be a worthwhile, one-time expense. AND... like excavators, dozers have all kinds of neat levers and things to push and pull on!!

Be 100 years before that forest has anything valuable on it, unless those trails lead to a beautiful stand of spruce I haven't seen yet. Those fir are nothing but a weed, good pulp.
