I’ve owned this Game Gear since 2011 when it was already broken, so it’s probably more than 12 years. Regardless, it was the victim of an ill-attempted capacitor replacement when I had minimal electronics experience and later had parts removed from it to fix other Game Gears. Today, the goal is to right my wrongs and finally give this French Game Gear the operating life it deserves. Yes, I bought it in France.

To solder those smt caps on flat without using hot air the best method is to only put solder on one pad then heat the pad with your iron and slide cap into position and hold down with finger or tweezers, then go and add solder to the other side and push cap down gently from the top as you add solder to make sure it’s flush. Good solder and flux will make it easier (check out solder brand called multicore get some 60/40 around .73mm or so and a brand called chemtronics for flux and desolder braid) much better them goot and the generic solder Jaycar sell. It makes a huge difference.

2euro is pretty good, what was shipping like to Perth? The annoyance is having to add 3 to 4 days once something arrives in Perth for Australia Post to actually remember that they do in fact deliver stuff :P They have this fancy new multi-million dollar sorting facility in Welshpool, yet they still manage to take 3 to 4 days to send something from Perth to the Bunbury region...

Have been looking for replacement contrast wheels. 1 of my gamegears needs one and I spent forever a year or 2 ago and came up empty, couldn't even find anything that would fit on places like digikey.

Haha Brilliant...."what's the boiling point of electrolytic fluid?....Who cares!!" Then 30 seconds later rips capacitors from the board tearing up traces as he goes....thats how we do things in this country

Haha. Tbf I didn't actually rip up any traces or pads. Some of the other caps were basically pushed off the board off camera because they had leaked so much.
