After playing Octopath Traveler 2 I immediately fell in love with the game. Even though it was a somewhat niche game that I otherwise would not have even looked at, I gave it a chance and found a hidden gem. Here is my review of why Octopath Traveler 2 is a masterpiece.

I mean... This is strange take and I hate that it may actually be kinda truth. Octopath Traveler 1 was everywhere! It was so well received, so popular and spoken about that seeing 2nd one to actually be almost silent release that failing in Japan already awfully disappointing. Even with you being right, I hate that "Persona" is an answer because it isn't good and totally entry level JRPG. Lol what? Under what rock you live to believe that "retro-styled" 2D games weren't popular or get outdone by 3D? This was debunked ton of times already! And from the beginning of "3D era" itself! Like, you know, there's a reason why Symphony of the night and igavania Castlevanias are considered classics and almost all the 3D ones as feilures. Not to mention that Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 or Live a Live, or Pixel Remasters of FF1-6 all gone for their remasters not only with 2D but a pixelart! JRPG was niche before Octopath? I guess you're really not into it then. If there's no AAA things it doesn't mean they're forgotten at all or has any lack of fans. Because, hello, freaking Undertale is a turn-based JRPG! SMT never died and before 5th was all sprited. OMG, how much more wrong can you actually go? Where the hell Octopath took it's inspiration from FF6? If there's any games it took from it's: SaGa, Live A Live and previous game of this producer Bravely Default. There's never was any "team build lock", what you even talking about? You always could swap any character for another at the tavern and just go around the city with path actions you need. The closest to your point were purple chests that require thief and still you can always easy backtrack there if you wish to with the thief in party. Again, bad take. Job system hinted you that there's some "perfect match" secondary jobs for each character and that those don't actually overlap. And it forced player to actually build a versatile team instead of "3 mages and a cleric" but sure, let's cal this bad. If anything this isn't a QoL and more of the opposite. Oh, again with that "thinking is boooooring" whine from people that can't comprehend quality gameplay and have no attention span. And no, All out and Tera if anything are boring "pres X to win" time wasters that take stupidly long and make fighting even more single brained. Boost mechanic is much more complicated and about proper strategy with having different effects on different moves. Lol, hearing about petrifying boss was stupidly fun. Reminds me of all the SMT crybabies that don't build their team properly. I mean... You do know you have Rehabilitate on apothecary, right? "No one care about the music"... Yep, right, totally. This is why ton of reviews on ton of games mention every time when soundtrack is either gorgeous or horrendous. Do you even play actual games, if there's no good music to notice and speak about? Guess KZfaq know how to recommend some amazing entertainment from time to time...

"I hate that 'Persona' is an answer because it isn't good and totally entry level JRPG." - Not sure if you're implying gateway JRPGs are a bad thing or not, still a weird Persona take though. "Lol what? Under what rock you live to believe that "retro-styled" 2D games weren't popular or get outdone by 3D?" - I live on this rock called the 'Earth', and I don't think you understood my point, I'm comparing 2D games to the most popular games today like Fortnite and Warzone, which are OBJECTIVELY more popular. "JRPG was niche before Octopath? I guess you're really not into it then. If there's no AAA things it doesn't mean they're forgotten at all or has any lack of fans." - JRPGs were and STILL ARE niche, wtf are you talking about? Most people in the gaming community don't play them. Just because Undertale did extremely well, it was an exception, an no it's not a JRPG because it's not JAPANESE. "Where the hell Octopath took it's inspiration from FF6? If there's any games it took from it's: SaGa, Live A Live and previous game of this producer Bravely Default." - Sure I'll give you that it does take more inspiration from SaGa, but to say that it absolutely doesn't take any inspiration from FF6 is asinine. The artstyle, the combat, the enemy design of Octopath are very similar to FF6. "There's never was any "team build lock", what you even talking about? " - I never said that, wtf are YOU talking about? I said only 2 characters can do a mechanic (getting items, getting info, etc.) and allowing 4 character to do the same mechanic made it a smoother experience. Again, missing the point. "And it forced player to actually build a versatile team instead of '3 mages and a cleric' but sure, let's cal this bad. If anything this isn't a QoL and more of the opposite." - How is this a bad take? Players SHOULD be allowed to build 3 mages and a cleric if they want to. There is 0 benefit in not allowing players to build how they want. "Oh, again with that 'thinking is boooooring' whine from people that can't comprehend quality gameplay and have no attention span. And no, All out and Tera if anything are boring 'pres X to win' time wasters that take stupidly long and make fighting even more single brained. Boost mechanic is much more complicated and about proper strategy with having different effects on different moves." - Why did you even type this? I literally said that boost mechanic was a good system. And if you think the All Out Attacks and Terastallization is just a "press X to win", then you've probably never played these games. "Yep, right, totally. This is why ton of reviews on ton of games mention every time when soundtrack is either gorgeous or horrendous. " - No they don't mention it every time actually. A lot of games have great soundtracks and no one mentions them. I'm not even sure why you even typed this whole comment out. Are you trying to defend the game that I'm calling a MASTERPIECE? Or you do you just derive enjoyment from being an ass?

@@Atmux do you even remember your point? "Persona as definitive modern rpg". When baby easy game which you can complete being brain-dead is considered "definitive" there's clearly a problem... Either with industry or gamers. Compare proper games to overly popular junk? By this compression even proper AAA are unpopular you know... Can we speak about actual gaming industry and not about trash for casuals or eSports? Those are extremely different fields. No one consider FIFA when speaking about games because it's popular for all the wrong reasons. Again either all the games are "niche" because they aren't Fortnite or Pokemon and Persona aren't JRPG. Get at least your mind together. "Most people don't play them"? I can say same thing about Cyberbug, Souls series, GoW because where I am at internet we play Octopath, Fire Emblem and SMT, will it make those unpopular? Actually, first Octopath had amazingly huge coverage so it was popular? The artstyle? Same as in crap ton of games? Since when pixelart belong to FF6? If anything this modern HD-2D is extremely unique. Combat clearly from Bravely Default and has nothing to do with FF6, actually the way classes work is closer to FF3 if you wish. Enemy design... Again this is clownery at this point. You... Said exactly that. I stopped after those words. You was complaining that game forces you to specific team builds to have each of path actions all the time. And no, if anything having 4 characters doing the same things is a waste of potentially other unique actions. Having two doing same already was actually... Because why waste money with merchant when you can steal, or why bother with Cyrus if Alfyn do the same with no penalty. No, player should learn to be smart and utilize different classes instead of spamming 2 hit spell with 3 characters without care about breaking shields. Saying it's good without understanding it is as bad. And lol, of course I didn't play those. Because there's no way anyone who played those without being brain-dead could disagree with you. Yep, sure... P5, again, is a baby level game, I get bored going through it 3rd time even on hard because it's that easy on NG+ especially. All out just fast way to finish encounter if anything survived weakness exploit and Terastrallization I didn't even use outside of dens because I was already overpowered by being smart... Coming to a bage underleveled didn't help too. Only time game used Terastrallization smart was at electric gym. Again, either you're wrong, play bad games or watch wrong people. I rarely see review that don't mention music if it's actually good. Why... Good question. Because I love pointing out awful mistakes that people may believe without knowing any better and get too many things wrong. And calling game a masterpiece mean nothing if you do it with ton of bad takes on other games, no understanding the genre and industry as a whole.

Wait what? Why would you say that nobody cares about the music?? Hell that's one of the most important bits of any JRPG imo! And I agree, as I play thru the 1st game I have been VERY impressed with the music! It's some of the better JRPG music I've heard in quite a while. It gives subtle nods in it's melodies to the soundtracks of games like Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean 2, Etc. I can hear bits & pieces of influence from those games in the soundtrack & I couldn't be happier for it!

OT2 is so fucking good dude. I was left feeling pretty let down by the first one because it was left basically unfinished by the end. But the second one? _That_ was genuinely a magical experience. It makes the first feel like a tech demo at best. It's so weird to think about, but there have been so many times I've been disappointed by game studios that I was almost convinced my standards were too high. Then, this game had to come out and blow them out of the water. It reminded me that _yes,_ games really can be much more in this day and age. The music, the combat, the world, the characters, the stories, literally everything - if I had to nitpick, I'm sure I could find something wrong, but I never even noticed anything while playing. I was drawn in the whole damn time, immersed, even. I thought that was something I could only get from games when I was a kid. When I reached the end, I was actually *sad* it was over, but I was happy at the same time that I'd played a game so good after so long. I know this is silly, but it really does feel kind of like the game was made just for me. So I think you're right when you say it's not for everyone. But god _damn,_ man, I CANNOT stress enough that this game is special regardless. Give it a try if you haven't already! There's a free demo if you're not sold yet.

@@corndog9482 In my opinion, the idea that turn base gameplay is somewhat bad is a big problem. I am actually fairly good at competitive at multi-player PvP game(Racing, fighting, RTS, FPS etc) , yet, my favorite games are turn based. So from my point of view of a capable player, I don't get why turn based games have become unpopular, if they actually are. Turn base doesn't necessary means retro styled in my book. That is my complaint. It's ok to do retro. OT2 is actually doing it really well, and it has its charm. But what I meant in my first comment is : turn based game can be graphically more ambitious and modern than FF6. There were never a lot of animated sprites in FF6 btw. And it is a major flaw to me. Because SNES games were not necessarily this static. I can respect the fact that FF6 was very popular for valid reasons. But we're are in year 2023. I am not asking for Gran Theft Auto level of ambition. I am just saying that in the technical department, OT2 is nowhere near my technical expectations in the JRPG. And I actually really love OT2 at the moment. It's a blast so far. The game is doing it right in a lot of categories. But in 2023, there is a lot of margin for graphical improvement. It's the most obvious. Not the only one. That being said, I take what we have with this great game. And I am grateful for the work done on it.

To me Random Turn Based Encounters don't have to be boring! It all comes down to the presentation. I absolutely LOVE the Dragon Quest games, & the formula for them hasn't changed in decades, yet they are still tons of fun! Again, it all comes down to the small things. The music, the sound effects in battle, the look & feel of the menus, the battle animations, the way you gain experience and/or job points, the way your characters grow, etc. All of this stuff can make or break a turn based RPG! It's what games like Dragon Quest & Octopath Traveler do right!

I am born in 1991, I played videogames in the late 90s, and early 2000s. I had the grace to experience Chrono Trigger, Suikoden 2, Xenogears and Final Fantasy 6... Well my dear friends, Octopath Traveler 2 is the only worthy successor to the JRPG genre. It is the first true classic in the RPG genre since 2001's Final Fantasy 10. I dismiss everything released during this black whole aeon between these true grand classics. OT1 did a nice job to create a formula. OT2 brought honor to Squaresoft's and yes I insist Squaresoft. Square-Enix needs to remember what it meant to be Squaresoft! Octopath Traveler 2 is my favorite game since 2001's FF10. So it is tied with FF9 as my favorite game of the 21st century. Since well all other grand masterpeices are sort of in the last century. Kudos to the great team at Square-Enix for remembering what it means to be Squaresoft!

Yeah, it's the oddest thing 🙂I loved the first Octopath, but completely missed that 2 was out until I accidentally stumbled across it on the Nintendo E-Shop a few weeks after its release. I'm 30 hours in and loving every second, let's hope poor initial sales won't kill the chances of a sequel.
@LPTheGas
@LPTheGas Жыл бұрын
The first one was published (and pushed hard) by Nintendo everywhere outside Japan; the sequel is published globally by Square-Enix, who at some point got it in their heads that they could coast on brand recognition and didn't need to put any effort into marketing (which KIND OF makes sense for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, but they act like being known as the makers of those games means everything they put out will automatically sell just based on having the SE name on the box). That's why you never heard about it.

I even got the soundtrack and strategy guide for the first games, II's soundtrack is still impossible to find below $40. Also turn based RPGs are my favorite video game genre ever so I am very much in the target audience for these games.

Thank you for an amazing review. I've been playing this game over the last few weeks and it has been phenomenal. Games lately haven't been hitting the same and giving me the same... how to put it... the same excitement that I am used to in the past. However, OT2 has revitalised gaming for me, the amount of emotion it's managed to evoke in me during my time with it has been really special, and this is an easy choice for my GotY for 2023 (so far). You basically said everything I feel, especially on the point of how the largest complaint is the games characters not intereacting with each other's stories, and the logistical nightmare it would be. The nightmare aside, I feel like at this point even if they found a way to incorporate each character to each other's stories in a meaningful way, if would start to become just like any other jrpg and I feel like the separate 8 stories are what makes this series unique and special. I'm so happy I played this game, it's a special experience and I wish it had recieved the correct marketing that it deserved because I feel like it's going to be seen as a flop, which is heartbreaking.

I can tell ya that I'm absolutely LOVING the 1st one! I've been a hardcore RPG fan my entire life but the genre has felt quite stale for a while now as it becomes far too Anime. I very much dislike the average stereotypical Anime characters, environments & plotlines and that stuff is being injected into the vast majority of JRPG's these days, because for reasons I cannot fathom, that seems to be what the average person likes. I prefer stuff that is more grounded in reality & actually has good writing. But yeah, I find myself really loving this game in a very refreshing way. It doesn't necessarily do anything groundbreaking, but the way everything is presented is just REALLY well done, and the battle system is just plain fun! I love all of the various elements that each character's unique classes brings to the fighting system & it just makes it fun & engaging. Not to mention the ability to be constantly rewarded with items & gear with the basically broken Thief's Steal ability. I just absolutely love running thru a new town stealing everyone's shit lol, as well as beating up the local townspeople and leaving them all unconscious on the ground. It's the simple things in life.... ;)
@LPTheGas

The genre was always anime af dude. Right from the beginning, the two big franchises that defined it had character designs by the creators of Dragon Ball and Vampire Hunter D, with writing to match. You just didn't notice because they got swapped out for generic Frank Frazetta knockoff fantasy novel cover style art for the US release and the sprite graphics of the time weren't detailed enough to convey the artists' vision without a hefty assist from the player's imagination, and on the writing side, you weren't familiar with anime tropes yet.
@skins4thewin
@skins4thewin Жыл бұрын
@@LPTheGas Lol oh trust me, I am as familiar w Anime as anyone out there. Been watching since the early 90's before anyone even knew what it was. And I can tell ya for certain that things have gotten more tropey than ever, including Anime itself! Even Anime used to be a heck of a lot better than it is now. And ya I am definitely not trying to say that the story in Octopath 1 isn't tropey or is great or anything, that's for sure. Am just saying the game itself aka the battle system & mechanics are rather refreshing & not just your run of the mill generic turn based JRPG.

You know I've had a PS5 for like 3 months now and I've not seen this game once pop up on a list advertising for me to buy it. On a whim I ran into it and I'm working on the demo and I am sold immediately. There needs to be a whole lot more games like these still available. I forgotten niche for sure, but I would take a game like this over God of War, The Last of Us or Elden Ring any day. This is so much more up my alley of enjoyment.

Didn't know it sold poorly, but I'm not surprised. It sells for AAA prices, but doesn't have AAA production values. Don't get me wrong: I love how it looks and sound. But even I don't want to pay $60 for a game with static enemy sprites and gameplay that doesn't differ much from what we had in the 90s. This was a $30 game, tops, by current pricing standards (which may be unreasonably low, but that's another conversation).

I actually like the 8 somewhat disconnected story. That makes them extremely focused instead of one big story going off the rails, like many jrps do. I also did like the duo stories where they pair 2 characters and they have their own little side adventure. And I'll be honest, I think the biggest flaw is that the post end game content is a little lacking, but If they do another game is the series, I'd like to see them go one step further and do post end game challenges with only the characters in that side story can participate. Some kind of tower challenge would also be kinda cool.

2D is gorgeous imo! I still love a good looking 2D game, although nowadays we need highly detailed and animated 2D artwork. The first Octopath game on the Switch while beautiful in spots, the 2D textures feel a bit TOO old school in that they are very low res & not too detailed. I wish the entire game had higher res 2D art. I think it would look way better. The 2nd game seems to have done a bit of a better job with that, including having more animation in battle. I know 2D art takes a LOT of time & budget to create, but I'm still waiting on a game with gorgeous high res 2D visuals that really grabs me, and I haven't seen much of that still.

After 150 hours dumped into it and finding everything the game had to offer aside from personal challenges, speed runs etc. I can only agree, the game is a masterpiece. It has its flaws for sure, but then again so does all games I'd consider great games including Chrono Trigger, the final fantasy series, Secret of mana, Sea of stars, Chained echoes etc. It is really rare for me that I find myself wanting to just boot a game up and simply be in the game world after really completing a game but Octopath Traveler gave me that feeling a bit and Octopath Traveler 2 is all its predecessor was and more. The developers quite literally took what made the first game good and expanded on it in every way and made the game world feel weirdly alive and full of secrets. The stories, while not stuff that is revolutionizing were engaging each in their own rights with the overarching narrative making it feel like the 8 stories, the shared stories and quests were meaningful. I can definitely recommend the game to any RPG fan and especially to those who find the music to be an important part and in particular to those who like strategy and games that reward thinking things through (though that said I'm usually more inclined toward fast paced combat and I still found the combat to be super fun).

I actually didn't like the day/night field actions because NPCs completely changed when you swapped between day and night. Let's say I find an NPC with a weapon that I want. If I have Throne in my party I can try to steal it, or if Particio was in my party I could just buy it. Except that if I have one of those characters in my party, they can only trigger their ability during the day. So if I switch the time from night to day, suddenly the NPC disappears and I can't get that item unless I go find the tavern and get one of the characters that can acquire items at night. I don't really know why anyone thought forcing you to go to a tavern every time you want to change up your party composition was a good idea.
