Chess has a very... Interesting way of having a meta. While a meta does EXIST in chess, it is very, very minimal. So, in order to look into this, let's set two things apart: tactics and strategy While the two remain similar, there is a line between them. This line can be blurry, but it's there. Tactics are what you go into a battle doing. What you aim to do in order to achieve a specific outcome and let you win Strategies are what you devise mid-battle. Examining your opponents moves and playing off of them, reading out your opponent and stopping them in their tracks The things that make a META are many, but there is one thing that can consistently cause a meta. Pre-game options. Pregame options are things like character choices, movesets, etc. Take Mario kart. There are loads of options for pre-game: which character you choose, what kart, wheels, wings you want, all of these tactics are what you go into battle with, and can determine your standing with others very early. These differences can create a meta, depending on which pregame options set you ahead Chess has an INCREDIBLY small number of these Black and white, with white going first, who is white usually being determined by rng Chess is a heavily strategy based game, as both players have the exact same board at the beginning, a row of pawns in front followed by 2 knights, rooks, and bishops, with a queen and a king at center. The entirety of the game is based around what you and your opponent are doing and how you play off of that. Of course, moving your king around arbitrarily is not a good idea and will get you killed, but at that point, you are not trying to win. remember. *The idea that that there are good plays and bad plays do not make a meta.* Doubling back for another itembox in last place in order to get a much better item that will allow you to push up the ranks easier in a match is not the same as picking a specific bike and character in order to increase your chances before a match even starts. The most that could change those odds in chess is picking white or black, and while one does grant an inherent advantage, you will be reacting to your opponents moves, striking back, predicting their next plays, and pulling your own schemes. A meta is there. It is, however, minimal. Almost to a point where one just might say, with a slight lack of insight, that there is none.
