That kid fast talked her. The first book of the series the Song of Ice and Fire is called Game of Thrones. The Twilight series is called that because the first book is called Twilight. Just like the Divergent series is named after the first book Divergent. (And Brett, dear, the Song of Fire and Ice is based off the English War of the Roses, but inspired by Beowulf. The difference? Plot mostly. If it was based off of Beowulf, it would focus on one heroic character and follow his story. TSOFAI doesn't do that. It follows a kingdom where competing noble families fight to rule in the face of outside threats, like the War of the Roses)

So during 1 of my deployments I got heavy into TOM CLANCY, ghost recon series. I read maybe 6->8... I couldn't tell you exactly what those titles were, But from the jack Ryan series, I read The Hunt for RED October, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present danger, Sum of all fears. Another great series was AMERICAN APOCALYPSE by Nova. Books 1->4 plus Gardner summer and Gardner winter.

And actually recent copies are branded with "Game of Thrones," across the top of the front cover, with the book title at the bottom. It's perfectly reasonable that if a person potentially has a book series that says "Game of Thrones" across the top of every book, that they assume the series is called Game of Thrones. Tale of genji was written in the 11th century, and the oldest novel is the epic of Gilgamesh post 1200 bce after being recompiled from epic poems (similar to beowulf) into an actual story. Edit: tale of genji written heian period japan 794-1050 ce Epic of gilgamesh written around 2150 bce recompiled from poem to story around 1400 bce, significant gap. Although the tale of genji is still widely regarded as the first true novel because any "novels" that came before it were just recompiled epics transitioning from poem to story.

Damn, my private school practically forced all students to to read at least four or five books picked off a given list in an entire semester (even the Pre-K kids) and I thought that was annoying as a kid (mainly because the books picked for us students were boring and GOD FORBID an adult tell elementary school me what to do with my free time). Thankfully, I learned that when I wasn't forced to read and actually got to pick my own book, I actually enjoyed reading and I still do to this day! The fact that some public schools don't force their students to read is mind boggling to me.

Fun facts about a few books: the Fifty Shades of Grey books started out as fanfiction for the Twilight series, but the author changed some things and turned it into her own books series. In Twilight, the wolves are not werewolves, but in fact are shifters. There are real werewolves in the books, but aren't seen in the story. They and vampires don't get along. Also, the reason the vampires glitter in the sunlight is because their bodies are basically like ice so are reflecting the sunlight. The Lord of the Rings books were based off of Tolkien's experience in World War II and the Ents represented the United States of America. If I remember correctly, all of the Jane Austin books have a happy ending because she nor her sister got theirs with the men they loved. The books series that the movie Eragon is based off of (it's called the Inheritance Cycle), the author was only 19 when the first book was published. It was supposed to be only 3 books, but the last book became so long that it was made into two books instead. Also, the books are WAY better than the movie. 😆

You can be 100% literate and very smart, but still not read for fun. With so many media options available to us today, it’s not as common a hobby as it used to be. And honestly I know many voracious readers who are still pretty dumb cuz they just read trash. Books should not be conflated with intelligence. But I’d understand why a dumb person would think that.

@BBS-dl1lt I can 100% agree with you. Personally I feel like you can learn what you would from a book in KZfaq and even more, not saying they don't work at all but the way people learn has changed drastically this past few years. I still enjoy reading here and there but not that much, prefer to do some other stuff as a hobby. Also gotta clarify I like reading about history of stuff, medical stuff or stories that keep you hooked, I don't really like novels.
