GARP (Growth at a Reasonable Price) investing, a strategy popularized by investor Peter Lynch, lies between value and growth investing, aiming to combine the best of both worlds. It focuses on identifying companies where growth is being undervalued rather than simply finding cheap stocks.
In this video, I explored various iterations of GARP investing strategies, each with its own set of criteria:
1. The first iteration involved a simple screener that considered market capitalization, the PEG ratio and EPS growth rate
2. I then utilized SOIC's GARP framework which is a combination of market cap, year-on-year quarterly sales and profit growth rates, plus a PE multiple of below 30. I was surprised, this methodology excluded the PEG ratio, a key component in traditional GARP strategies
3. The third GARP methodology, inspired by an Economic Times article, involved a 6-point criteria including market cap, sales revenue, profit growth rates, PEG ratio, and analyst coverage
4. The fourth GARP strategy the S&P 500 GARP Index, which tracks companies considering growth factors like EPS and sales-per-share growth rates, as well as quality and value composite factors such as financial leverage, return on equity, and earnings-to-price ratio
Finally I put all our learning together to create a single GARP strategy that delivered a remarkable 115% return over the last year. Overall, GARP investing involves balancing growth potential with valuation metrics to identify undervalued growth opportunities

@shankarnath
@shankarnath 2 ай бұрын
I put subtitles in my videos so that the content can be consumed by people who are watching it on their way back (like in a metro) or those who have hearing impairment. Apologies for the inconvenience caused to you Fortunately there is a solution which has been a feature offered by KZfaq for the last 10-15 years. You'll see a CC button in the top right corner of your mobile device when watching my videos. Alternatively, if you are watching it on a laptop, you'll see an icon (I think 3rd or 5th from the right) in the bottom right corner. Tapping on these buttons enables and disables the caption. Please try it .. I have used it hundreds of times

@shankarnath

Thanks for the suggestion. Every quarter I'm guessing there might just be 2 or 3 changes primarily based on the PEG ratio as valuations move faster than changes in sales/earnings growth or promoter holding.

Shankar ji - Thank you so much for sharing this strategy. Your content (Newsletter, Videos) are something I really look forward to always. Simplicity with which you explain does not come easy as at your end you must have to spend huge to time to make it concise and impactful. While I will watch and rewatch to understand the concept better, I have a qq on the first glance - Aditya Vision has Debt / Equity of 2.3. In my list, it would have been filtered out as per my screeening criteria. Your views on such high Debt / Equity would help to understand why it still has place in your list?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 2 ай бұрын
Hello Vikrant ji -- I don't look at debt-equity ratio with as much intent as I look at the interest coverage ratio (I have incorporate Int. Coverage in my screener aswell). Let me explain with a small example. So, 2 companies --- Company A has debt of 100, equity of 200, earns EBITDA of 5 rupees .. and there is Company B with 100 in debt, 20 in equity and earns operating profits of 50 rupees Now for someone looking at D/E ratio, they'll give a higher preference to Company A as that ratio is 0.5 but for me, it doesn't matter because a debt of 100 means the interest payable per year is 10. The company isn't earning enough operating profit which makes it a potential default situation and there is no way the company will be able to rollover the debt which means the DE ratio means nothing here. On the other hand, Company B has a DE ratio of 5 but that doesn't bother me because the company is earning enough (i.e. high interest coverage) to not only pay the interest amounts but it can also extinguish its debt in a few short years.

I have some questions, Can I copy your framework for the future considering the risk Second how to decide about the percentage allocate to different stocks based on your framework and at last do the amount plays a role in adopting this kind of strategy and if so then can 10 lakhs be a stating good amount? Can you please give your take on the quick differences in the Trending Value Strategy and the GARP strategy? How both of them differ from each other and are similar to each other?

Hi Sir, Thanks for the awesome video. This is explained in very simple terms. Really a fan of your storytelling skill. Just wanted to know what would be the entry point. Is it anything less than a PEG of 2.

Thank you so much. I am glad you liked it. I've discussed your query in the video itself towards the last .. framework 5 i.e. my framework .. which is a compilation of the other 4.

Thanks a lot Sir 🙏 This is what sets you apart, your responsiveness. You responded to my message in just 45 minutes. Even the people who run paid communities/courses don't do that. Very much appreciated

Can you please create a video on Tax Harvesting in MF? Or Gain harvesting and what are its Pros and corns. Is it really beneficial to do that with your Long tern MF for tax benefits?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. Personally, I don't think the gains from tax-harvesting are significant enough to justify the effort -- so I don't worry about it. Having said this, I do use tax loss harvesting to improve my portfolio. I have a video on the same at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8VzftWfq5qnpI0.html

You are doing a great work sir, I watched first video as momentum and value investing MF and after that I am a big fan of your content. Thanks for all these hard work and guidance. I have a question sir, We understand where to invest but when to exit in this strategy? do we need to rebalance portfolio every year based on GARP screener stocks? If yes then when we should start investing in these stocks? any date or can start from today onward?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your appreciation and gratuity. There is no defined answer to your question but if one thinks logically, the answer is there in the video itself. For instance, the PEG ratio preferred range is 0 to 2. So if it goes outside that, then it's not preferred & hence becomes a trigger for exit. The same way one can define an exit strategy. Even for your other questions, there is no defined process.

@@shankarnath Thanks for quick response sir, I will create excel sheet and start monitoring this strategy everyday for some time. Will add it in my portfolio if I get a good return after my observation. :D

@@smilyhemant If possible, please apply some learnings from previous videos on technical indicators such as moving averages, RSI, Piotroski score etc. The idea should be to develop a methodology that you are comfortable with. GARP + technical indicators can be really helpful. Try it.

Hi Shankar. Nice compilation of scattered info. Can you suggest when should one use the screener provided by you at the end of video ? As 1 month before the screen was showing 24 stocks and today it showing only 14 stocks. ,?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Ай бұрын
Hello. You should build a frequency for yourself. I would say 1 year. So pick a date -- say, 15th May. And every 15th of May of each year, pull out the list of available stocks .. do some checks (I would read news, earnings call on many of these stocks) and create a bucket of not more than 15 stocks.

Hi Sir I have watched this video multiple times. I have observed that stocks on the screen will increase or decrease according to market conditions. However, I have one doubt: how is it that the stocks shown by you and the stocks as of today, 29-06-2024, have doubled in just a matter of 2.5 months? Is it because the market is at an all-time high, or is there another reason?

It might be a silly question. So you run the query and got a list of stocks to invest right now but the stocks that are displayed have a past record of 1 year over 100%. If you ran the query 1 year ago you would have got a list of stocks which is different from now. So we have to wait for a year to see whether this is true. Am I right or am I missing something? BTW, great knowledge and great clarity of speech. I became a subscriber

You are absolutely right. I explained why backtesting is not possible at my end in the video but if you have the resources, please do try it out & share the results. I still believe this doesn't corrupt the strategy though as this is where most people have made money over the years.

Very good video. However, I have one question. How do we exactly know when to enter or exit?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath 2 ай бұрын
There is no study I found on the exit but here's a simple framework I use that works most times i.e. if I enter a stock/portfolio when certain conditions are ripe, one should exit when those conditions aren't there. E.g. in this case, GARP needs a PEG of between 0 and 2. So if the PEG goes over 2, then it's exit time.
