I have a 90s Martin DM. I love it. Even if I end up owning higher priced guitars, I'll never part with it.

Jeremy you were so gracious with your friend when you took the guitar back. You are truly a super guy. Plus your explanation on care of the guitar was thoughtful and simple low-cost. I loved it.

That was the first Martin I bought - a DM. I got it out and restrung it recently, to give it to a friend. I was really amazed at how well it had opened up. The problem is, it's humid here, and all the sweat had got the binding coming off, and discoloured the guitar. It sounds great - but I don't think they'll last very long - mine seems very fragile and beaten up. I'm happy to give it away - but it was like my first true love of guitars.

I bought a '97 DM from the original owner 2 years ago, he played the daylights out of it. I cant see myself ever selling it. Great tone and big volume, a real player.

I’ll have to watch the rest of this later! Excited to see the end. My 98 Dm is one of my favorite guitars. It gets as much air time as my Larrivee , Gibson, and Eastman guitars.

The best thing we can do for our acoustic guitars is keep them in the case when not playing them.

I am praying that is the case for both my guitars, I live in Santa Fe at 7000 ft. Keeping them in a humidity controlled environment is not realistic, so far, so good.

Except a guitar in the case is a guitar unplayed usually. I'm confused here because they bake or try to remove all the moisture to make these guitars seem old but then they need to be humidified and then re-add a lot of moisture

@@adamstewart247 Two great points. Yes, it does take that one extra step to get it out and play, which if someone doesn't have the ambition to do that, it won't get played. I wondered about the second point myself. Must work though, guitar makers are making big bucks off the concept.

@@scottstevens3213 I live in British Columbia at a higher elevation and I'm able to keep my entire basement controlled at 45-55%. Winters are -5 to -30 degrees celuisus on average and plus 30-40 degrees celuisus in the summer and it's an extremely dry summers and winters. It totally is realistic to have a humidity controlled room in Santa Fe.

Kept in case with a humidor! A guitar can still dry out and crack without humidification!

Thanks for another great video! I picked up a DM yesterday in about the same shape, along with a Martin Backpacker, for $400 total. Cleaned it up and put a hydra pack in it. I think it's going to make a great player. I think these lower cost Martins tend to live a harder life than the higher dollar stuff. I know I don't even think about throwing my nicer guitars in the back of the truck when I go camping.

I have a DM 6 and 12 string .Until youtube I had no idea that humidity or lack thereof was such a problem as I live in Miami Fla and we have no such issues.BTW there are great guitars.

My 2003 DM was my first Martin. I still have it along with four other Martins. It is an incredible guitar for the money. I love the bottom end. It is basically my workhorse when I don't want to break out the D15 or the D18.

Martin DM’s. I believe are low end Martins. Still decent. Probably solid top Lam-B/S. Your friend should consider a--all Laminated Yamaha for Camping/ Canoe trips etc.

Just came across your channel and glad I subscribed. Can anyone tell me how often I should change those Humid packs? I have a couple acoustic guitars and use humidpaks but sometimes I use the dampits and all my acoustics are doing well except one . I have one that the bridge is a little lower than the fingerboard. Thanks

I would recommend getting a humidity reader that will read down into the wood before assuming humidity issues. Too many people assume humid is a remedy when it is often the source of the problem. Guitars are manufactured from wood that is dried to often less than 10 percent moisture.

I am surprised that you didn't recommend pushing a little wood glue into the split and cleating it. That's not a difficult job and will guarantee longevity. Good video!

Laminate back and sides but they boom ... They also have a bolt on mortise and trunion neck easy to reset neck .... only glued spot is the fingerboard extension... Simple reset

I had a DM and sold it in 2020 because I was on Furlough from my job because of Covid. I was selling everything I could because I needed the money. I really miss that guitar. 😭 never should have sold it!!!

I think if they protect from inside (shellac or ...) it wouldn`t loose humidity.

Don't you mean "lack" of humidity? My 94 HD 28 top cracked because of the dry air during the winter.

Humidity isn't the real villain in this drama. One could get an Epiphone wrapped in polyurethane for one's camping trips. The string wrap closeup was thoughtful.

I have a D-1, the DM predecessor, and a D-28. I’ll never sell the D-1. I’d sell the 28 if it wasn’t sentimental.

A quick way to humidify a guitar is to take a shower with it. My Clarence White got dry last winter so I put a guitar stand on my sink and took a hot shower without running the fan, just let the guitar breathe it in like it's in a sauna. This is the nuclear option to fixing a dry guitar but it works, only rules are don't let the guitar get wet and always wipe it down to remove any moisture from the surface. You should only have to do this once or twice to fix a dry guitar.

HUMIDITY is not the problem here, that would be too much moisture bowing the bridge. LACK OF HUMIDITY or dryness is the problem. Humid means lots of moisture. "You use humid to describe an atmosphere or climate that is very damp". You must mean the humidity level.
