This video sold me on the flooring and I have since done lots of research that many may find helpful. The manufacturer is WellMade and was originally made in China but is now being made in Georgia as well. A good article on the person who developed this is a Feb. 7, 2022, article in FCNews. The product is privately labeled and different sellers use different names for the product line, color/finish, etc., but the same pictures and sometimes the same verbiage to describe it. It always come with 16.68 sq ft per box. It is 7 mm thick, 5" wide, and up to 4' long. It has a urethane/aluminium oxide finish. The wear layer / veneer (wood) is 1.2 mm (47.2 mil), the core is 5.8 mm (HDPC = high density polymer composite, which I believe is the same as SPC = stone polymer composite). The attached vinyl padding (I would call it rubber) is 1.0 mm. Jeff's link takes you to wayfair (Islander Flooring line). Other sellers that I found are - Home Depot (Optiwood line) - BuildDirect (Jasper/Varuna line) - Wallmart (Pacific Crest line) - Costco (Golden Arowana line) I have ordered samples from three of these sellers--they all have WellMade stamped into the attached padding/underlayment and the samples are all the same size. The color/wood/finish I have chosen is called honeycomb, countryside, sunglow, or frontier, depending on the seller (often given the number 71106). It is currently cheapest at Home Depot. I haven't bought mine yet--don't plan to install it until next year and plan to use it both in the basement (about 700 sq ft) and main level (about 511 sq ft). I looked into using a 6 mil moisture/vapor barrier and/or an additional separate underlayment (not sure I would call it a pad). Although several people say not to use an underlayment because one is already attached, there are some separate underlayments (rather hard and thin) that are made to go with such floors with attached pads. The risk of certain secondary underlayments would be too much give, which may cause the locking connection between the planks to wear down when the floor is walked on. I think Abatec that Jeff recommends (1.5 mm thick) is a good choice, as is Quietwalk by MP Global (2 mm). I think adding a 6 mil vapor barrier to a separate underlayment would be overkill. The advantage of one of these two separate underlayments would be sound deadening and thermal insulation, in addition to being a moisture barrier. One think several people recommend is using a PE backer rod (a spongey long thing with a circular crosssection, maybe 3/8" diameter) around the edges the rooms (where one would use spacers during the installation), topped with silicone caulk--I don't think Jeff talks about this and I'm not convinced it is worth it, except maybe in a kitchen or bathroom. This edging would allow the expansion/contraction of the floating floor but would attempt to prevent water going in along the edges (e.g., under the molding) and soak in/under the flooring.

I've been researching flooring for over a year and narrowed it down to hardwood or porcelain. I was on the verge of going with porcelain until I saw this video tonight. Now I'm off to researching engineered hardwood. I've been a fan for over two years and am so grateful to you for all of the invaluable knowledge you've shared. I’ve watched many many of your videos and from watching you and how you explain things gave me more of an understanding of modern building materials to the point where I added a large bathroom to my house!! Yep” Jackhammer the floor ran all of the drainage did all of the drywall ran all of the pex’s and did the shower bathtub kit and Vanity and toilet and did all drywall and paint AND a click lock floor design for bathrooms. I used a different manufactured wood product, though it was quite similar. When sliding a locked board in place you can use a small cut board (sacrificial piece) to tap it into place. No gaps and you don't risk breaking the end locking mechanism.

After trying a dozen of vinyl samples, went with engineered hard wood (white oak). The main reason was the feel and look that i got from hardwood, and like you said, high end vinyl products could cost the same and hard wood! I guess vinyl would be good for basement projects where humidity or water could be an issue. Thanks for all your valuable recommendations.

The hard wood looks great. About to put down vinyl plank floor in my kitchen. One of the reasons that I'm using plank, is because my father in law owned his own business. He gave me the flooring. Installed Bruce engineered hardwood in my dining room about 15 years ago. The click lock was easy and it still looks great.

I love engineered flooring. The best I’ve used so far is Kahrs made in Sweden. It’s 5/8” thick with an 1/8” wear layer. But the best part is that it has an end lock mechanism to keep the ends nice and tight. It’s called 5S click lock.

I like to do the floors before doors and trim. A lot easier to hang a door than mess about with cutting around them and trying to make it look good.

Yes i did used that in my whole new house 4 years ago. Previous house built 8 years ago was regular nailed hardwood, wayyyyyy easier with cliplock system. Nice trick for the end tips, didn't tought of cutting the lip. Was using prybar to move it and clip them. One question, if one of my plank in the middle of the kitchen uncliped, what are my options? i have a 1/4 inch gap appearing over winters thanks!

Jeff everyone loves your videos - Just a pro tip a diyer would want to be very careful when floating floors to not make them so tight that you have to hammer them down a tight floor or pinched edge floor is going to buckle and/or gap, even a click lock. So when putting in baseboard also do make it so tight that it pinches the floor either. THANKS!

Good idea taking the door trim off and trimming it rather than going with oscillating saw which will produce a gap that cant really be avoided. Also good tip on screwing first row down. Last time I did a floor right towards the end I noticed it had moved about a inch. Luckily got it back in place. This stuff does look a lot nicer than laminate.

I have been researching concrete flooring for my home. The floor is in such bad shape for when the house was built with paint and spray markers, and not to mention the glue from the vinyl tile that was applied directly to the concrete. It has been a pain. Now I'm having to consider resurfacing. Having a good quality floor is really important to me so this is a very appealing option.

If it’s difficult to flatten then planing the bead eases it. I used a jigsaw, workmate and clamps, and a sliding mitre saw. and a block plane. If you are sliding it under an obstacle like a toilet then you might need to but joint by cutting and planing off the click joint. Clamp boards before rip cutting.

I was laying half inch engineered hardwood and some of the planks were a bit warped, so I set my circular saw to cut through about half the thickness and cut a series of cross cuts every 3-4 inches to allow the board to lay flat. Then I saw this product, and they did it already for you. And yes, pre-painting the door trim and baseboard and laying it on top of the floor after the flooring is down is the only way to go.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks. Was was looking for something like this a while back, but my job is done now. My only concern with a floating floor is that I can tell in about 3 steps if the floor is floating or not. It doesn't have that solid glued down or nailed down "thud" when walking on it. It is more of a give away when dogs walk on it with their clicking claws. I glued my engineered hardwood mainly because it was adjacent to tile set on a concrete slab and the tile is like rock. I didn't want that transition from sold rock feel to a hollow sound/feel. I'm happy with the results, but it was much slower and more labor intensive to glue it all down to the slab. I would definitely use your product in a condo or smaller house.

Nice video - thnx. I installed a similar product from Flooret - their Silvan Hardwood line (on line availability only). The finish is a bit more satin than other click floors so it doesn't have the sheen that vinyl floors have. Techniques fm this video were quite helpful. I have a hallway w doors on both sides left to do. It will be a long tedious day. :)

I thought he was going to show SPC Hardwood, here in US In the last year or so Stone Core with a real hardwood layer that’s finished in an Oxide is just coming on the market. It’s a ACH (durability rating) is 3/5 with regular hardwood around 2. It’s also water resistant and due to the stone core has about 70% less expansion and contraction as wood based stuff.

Jeff, all of your videos are awesome, thank you. Wondering what you think of waterproof laminate vs. LVP vs. this engineered hardwood. I installed LVP in our last home a few years ago, but it scratched up easily and even buckled/cracked in some areas. We are buying a new home, and so I'm wondering if the waterproof laminate would be more durable. How's the water resistance of this engineered HW?

Hey Jeff, Once again very informative video. I am trying to install this kind of waterproof hardwood from homedepot. I have planked subfloor that was installed around 1955 .My current wood floor is squeaking a lot through out the house and I think that the 50 percent of the area in a room makes noise. Is there a way to install engineered hardwood over that old floor and eliminate the squeak ? or do you recommend removing the old wood floor, reinforce the subfloor and then install the new floor ? your opinion is appreciated. Thank you

That is impressive for hardwood floor products. I would be interested in knowing how durable this engineered product is. I have a race car dog with nails who would be able to volunteer his time. Seriously, that wood flooring looks great and easier install.

I prefer bamboo snap flooring either Cali bamboo or morning star xd if installed right can be an good choice.

The board that gave your son trouble would have been easier if the seam wasn't in line with the doorjam (no matter how much planning something always puts up a fight lol) but if the seam was 2-3inches inside of doorway It would have been alot easier cus then scribe to fit the rest of the board and install with a pull bar ....dont mind my" backseat driver armchair contractoring comment I love your videos and channel you do amazing work and the way you teach is awesome!

And don't try to have it right against the bottom plate. There will be a layer of 1/2 inch drywall, and then baseboard, so they could easily leave a 1/2 inch gap.

Hey Jeff Love the channel! I'm really interested in this product but I'm curious how resilient it is compared to actual nail down engineered floor? We recently did our entire main floor with nail down engineered. Even wrestling with the dog on it doesn't scratch at all. We'd like to save a bit of money for the second floor but not at the cost of durability if ya know what I mean. Thanks!!

The difference is the wide kerfs (channels cut across) on the underside. That gives the individual plank more flexibility, allowing it to handle undulations in the substrate better. You COULD do the same thing yourself with any hardwood flooring product, whether engineered or solid, but doing so would take a lot of time.

How does this click-lock hardwood compare to the water/scratch resistant laminates like Mohawk Revwood? I've used Revwod a couple times now and I'm very happy with its results even after a couple year's use, in both water resistance and scratch resistance.

Stick with vinyl with at least 12mm wear layer. Pets and wooden floors don't go well together.

Jeff, thank you for your videos. Quick question, I need to put in 700 sf of flooring in the second floor of my house. This is a high end home and I want to make sure very little sound travels between floors (I watched your episodes on that.). Also, I want a quality natural long lasting wood flooring finish. I have bought the 2lb MLV for the upstairs, but I am having trouble finding out if I have to use a floating floor to go over it or if I can nail through the MLV into the new 3/4" OSB sub-flooring. I will have my flooring guys do this, but they don't have any experience with MLV, so I thought I would ask you. What is the highest quality flooring solution to use over MLV? I used your promo code to buy the MLV. Thanks again!

I’ve been searching for a flooring that she more thickness and sound reducing than luxury vinyl. This product looks like it will be really great!!!! Cannot be used over a floor with radiant heat in it?

Nice video but have a question. How do you do a jointing room where they have to tie together as one and you have to go backwards? So you can't lift the piece to snap them together. I can't see doing a whole nother room backwards from a doorway. Hope you get what I am trying to say. Love your show

I'm stomping around on 1200 sqft of subfloor right now, trying to figure out the right flooring. Trying to get the right product to match our "jacobean" doors that we just love. I think this vid might have been very well timed, if I can get that flooring in Illinois. What support does it require? 5/8" + 3/8" plywood good enough on 16" centers?

Curious about the technology in the underlayment foam pad - I haven’t seen a foam product that doesn’t turn to dust in a decade or so. Are underlayments different?

THey have a cork underlayment that will last a long time. The denser foam tend to last a long time too usually they are sold next to the other underlayments but are slightly more expensive and will look more smooth in texture.

Jeff, love your content. Where can you get this kind of flooring? Is this something you can find at Home Depot, Rona, etc or do you have to go to a specialty retailer? I'm in Northern Ontario and there are a lot fewer options here than there are in a major city. EDIT: just noticed your link. My bad.
