Hexcells Part 2 - I see you guys enjoy this game! Good news is that I enjoy it a bunch as well. This time I check out the random puzzle generator. Every puzzle it creates is solvable without guessing, and often extremely interesting. This random puzzle I get is no exception, enjoy the logic puzzle!

If you wish to get this game and send me interesting seeds to play (or custom puzzles!), get the game here! store.steampowered.com/app/304410/Hexcells_Infinite/ I made the choice to cut out a lot of my silent thinking this time (this puzzle was HARD!), and I hope the flow of the video still holds up.

The fact that each 'random' seed is pre-proofed means that it's a solved game, and that the algorithm for solving is probably very simple. It'd be nice to see the dev's solving algorithm, just to see what the computer's approach is when compared to a person's approach to solving. It'd be interesting to see if a computer has any efficiencies over the human brain's solving method, assuming the algorithm is single-threaded and not multi-threaded, where it could solve multiple chunks at once if it were multi-threaded.
@justkarkat9575

Honestly, might just be that it randomly generates a pattern of blues and grays, and then assigns numbers that make it solvable, but who knows
@NStripleseven
@NStripleseven 2 жыл бұрын
I would think to generate a solvable puzzle it would just iteratively remove unused information until it was satisfied with the difficulty, so it wouldn’t need a solving algorithm per se, it would just need an un-solving algorithm
@dachosens1
@dachosens1 2 жыл бұрын
@@NStripleseven agree, i was also wondering how they things are related to the seed, so the seed should either give information to create the puzzle, or the puzzles are somehow sorted in a way that relates to the puzzle... or maybe its the end arrangment of blues and greys, its a number in binary (blue or gray oviously so binary in some way), and maybe shuffled somewhat
@algc19
@algc19 2 жыл бұрын
My guess is that they generate a random puzzle and then check if there is a unique pattern of blues and greys satisfying the restrictions. If there is one, it is solvable. So there is no need for solving or un-solving algorithms. This is what they do with sudokus (it's called linear programming)
@somebodystealsmyname

Just one more reminder of how impressively good at puzzles Tyler is! I've been playing pencil-and-paper puzzles like this for years, not this exact game but many of this type share strategies and heuristics, and that puzzle would've taken me much longer than 20 minutes to solve! Even though I understand all the thought processes and patterns here, my brain just can't track the info and hypotheticals as well as he can, especially at parts like 5:00 :)

This video contains 145 instances of the word, 'blue'. As this video is 11:46 long, 'blue' was said on average every 4.87 seconds. The first 'blue' is said at 1:01, and the final 'blue' is at 11:03. This means for the main 'blue' portion of the video blues were said at a pace of every 4.15 seconds. This has been a blue PSA.

the idea of these always being solvable without guessing is great, but there is also another interesting way to go about it: allow the player to mark a tile as completely unknowable. There is this amalgamation of puzzles that you have to solve to view SCP-2212, and for the image you have to solve most of a nonogram, but there are a few parts of puzzle that cannot be solved, and the way you get a key for the larger part of the puzzle is with the unsolvable bits. It makes it interesting with you having to commit to "it's not that just that I don't know, it's that I can never know with the information given"
