Hey Arnold is my favorite cartoon from Nickelodeon, in fact, it is my favorite cartoon of all time. While I will make plenty more videos around why I love it, I figured today we will talk about one of the shows more "darker" episodes that really left an impression on my childhood brain from back in the day.
Check out the full "Darkest" Series here:

This, and the episodes "Four Eyed Jack", and "The Headless Cabbie" were so GOOD! (I saw "Ghost Bride" later on, so it's never felt quite as nostalgic to me for some reason). I've always loved the creepier episodes of Hey Arnold more (and have a love of creepypastas and NoSleep stories now, so correlation? lol). I also love how at the ending of each episode the ghosts would make an appearance, to keep that bit of spookiness at the end; it just feels more satisfying to me, for some reason. (Though if we're comparing them to each other in terms of being "unsettling", Four Eyed Jack creeped me out WAY more then the others (not sure why), despite, ironically, being my favorite of the scary episodes haha.)

The romance felt so forced, as did the return of the parents. I never liked their story or the setting. It is completely at odds with the setting of the show. Who the hell turns on Arnold and wants a jungle setting? Some of the humor or attempts at charm fell flat, like it was imitating a modern tonally ADHD kind of show, or something. And while city admittedly still looked quite nice, it doesn't compare to the colored pencil look from the show, especially season 1.
@Bopperann
@Bopperann 3 жыл бұрын
@Shin Shaman you mean not better than the show? I don't think anyone disagrees with that. If I remember right, the movie went through all kinds of production hell because Nickelodeon made it difficult. I've only heard bad things about the network and seeing the kinds of people they put in charge, it's true. Greedy network abuses it's creators and actors. It's why Dan Schneider got away with so much. It's such a shame that it's not the Nickelodeon we grew up with but now rather just another corrupt corporate giant.

@@saintd_ii Personally I only caught the movie half-way through so I have only seen the second half. With that said yeah the romance did feel forced but I didn't mind the jungle setting or the fact he finds his parents. The only reason why is because it it gives Arnold a happy ending and closes the series. Sure, I would liked to have seen another season or two instead but at least the series has closure.

Totally forgot about this episode. Right when you mentioned and/or showed the train I remembered that there was an episode about a haunted train that was pretty haunting as a kid. But man, now I remember the whole thing. Cool!

Hey Arnold! is my favorite cartoon too. I love cartoons with good writing and great voice acting, which Arnold delivered. And the show had an emotional core that few other shows (animated or not) can compare to.

I couldn't put it into words as a kid, but what disturbed me so much about this episode is that, in Grandpa Phil's story, the engineer is simply described as "going mad". Like he woke up that morning and went about his day perfectly fine until he literally went off the rails. It presented this unsettling notion that madness could set in at any time, with no warning, and that there was no going back from it to the point where not even death would be an escape, the person would just go on to be an insane ghost. Chilling stuff.

This episode and the one where they try to find the “ghost bride” and maybe “Four Eyed Jack” were the most terrifying for me. They all had an ending that suggested there was some level of truth to the horrific stories and then I couldn’t sleep for weeks.

These videos are great - just found your channel. The one Hey Arnold episode that has always stayed with me is the one where Helga gets in trouble in school and is sent to a psychologist for therapy. It's not "dark" persay but seeing a kids show really delve into those issues of broken families and insecurity (which Helga clearly was grown from - unattentive/potentially alcoholic mother; uncaring father) was really powerful to me. Hey Arnold as a whole was so grounded in its characters and it was not afraid to show elements of day to day life that were not always happy or pleasant; I definitely respect this show a lot, and thank you for your videos! Ha, I love how you mentioned in the beginning of the video that one day you’ll dona deep dive into hey Arnold and almost 2 years later you actually did it! Not only that, it’s seven hours! Hey Arnold is probably my favorite show of all time due to the same reasons we share. There’s something about this show that reminds us of our past, how life was pre 9/11. This show was more real than we ever knew

This made me realize how little I actually remember about the show. Old Spongebob and cartoon network stuff were the ones that stuck with me. Though I do remember the episode now and I recall being a little spooked by it. I mainly recall bits and pieces of the movie, more so the guy saying “you take the high road and I’ll take the low road” followed by a malicious chuckle. That and the episode where Helga and Arnold got stuck in the greenhouse and something about ants.

Oh man, I remember this being on close to bedtime too. The episode of Hey Arnold that jumps out as spookiest for me though is the vampire one - it didn't scare me too badly, but my little brother was so terrified of it. For years he couldn't handle vampires because of that episode, it really spooked him

I always found the episode of the ghost bride to be kind of dark, and the ending to that episode in particular where they lock the psycho kid in the cemetery with the ghost to be disturbing. Always spooked me when I was younger, but made me feel like an adult because I could watch something as dark as this and still enjoy it!

Nice man! I honestly thought you would talk about the dark episode where both Arnold and Gerald get in a fight with each other in a flower shop, don't want to be friends anymore, and Arnold has a bad dream when both he and Gerald are old and grown up. Man did that episode scare me 11-12 years ago as a kid. Can you please talk about that episode next double please?! The episode is in season 1 and is titled Part Time Friends.
