The new Masking Section added into Lightroom was a BIG DEAL! But...did you know there's a Hidden Button that makes it EVEN BETTER by giving way more control? In this video I show ow we can use this hidden function to realistically add drama to skies, add Special Effects, light a Macro Shot AND add Highlights to a Portrait!

As a user of the mobile version I’ve been achieving the process using masks and adding/subtracting and inverting. A dedicated button would be great, but you can still get there in LRm thankfully! It’s certainly a very powerful tool, just wish there was some control added to the select subject process as it sometimes misses bits...

Lightroom was transformed with the refinements to select subject and masking, and each update adds functionality. I have not opened Photoshop in months with my portrait work. Glyn, thanks for this. I'd personally ignore the comments by some of the more snarky commentators. They should obviously have their own channels, and I'm certain they know their stuff. To degrade what you are presenting is essentially a sign of insecurity. There is a place for content like this that introduces the concept in an easily digestible way. There is always time to get granular later on. Sure, you can do everything and more in Photoshop, but the entire point behind Lightroom was a simplified, faster, less precise workflow than Photoshop. There's a reason why the initial alpha and beta builds had the option for an External Editor, just for those really persnickety tasks that required intensive knowledge and workflow. That said, keep up the good work! And for the record, I like a snappy headline!
@glyndewis
@glyndewis Жыл бұрын
Cheers Harris. Yeah no problem with the 'snarky' comments ... some need replying to as they seem to not understand the meaning of'Goodbye' 😃 For some folks as you will know, the enhancements in Lightroom has seem them use PS less and less so for them it is 'Goodbye' and over time it will be for more people as even more enhancements are introduced. To say that will 'never' happen is like many people in thr 80's saying Digital Photography will never take off 🤣

Interestingly the application of intersect shows as “subtract” in the history panel, which it is not. If you have an larger area masked then choose “subtract” (perhaps a brush), the masked (affected) area is, as you would expect, the larger area except the part you have just brushed out. If, however, you choose “intersect” and use the brush, the only area masked (affected) is the area covered by both the original mask and the brushed area (which now brushes in the effect instead of brushing it out). In both cases, however, the history panel records the application of the brush as “subtract”, even though the effect of one is precisely the opposite of the other. The Adobe engineers need to update how this is recorded in the history panel to show a more accurate representation of what has been done.

Don’t worry, Adobe will fix this in a few years 😋
@glyndewis
@glyndewis Жыл бұрын
I guess you 'could' think of it that...you apply the first mask then use intersect to reveal it where you want; by revealing it in some areas you are 'subtracting' in others 🤪 Maybe that's how they were thinking...who knows, but yeah the word subtract can take some figuring out as to why 😃
@eartho
@eartho Жыл бұрын
I think the reason why is that Intersect is just an inverted subtract mask. There's nothing special going on with intersect other than the invert.
@glyndewis
@glyndewis Жыл бұрын
@@eartho Disagree. Invert does just that…invert. Intersect allows you to reveal the properties of a primary mask using the properties of a secondary mask.
@eartho
@eartho Жыл бұрын
@@glyndewis Intersect is the same as adding a subtract mask to your main mask and inverting it. The intersect button is simply a shortcut for those 2 steps. This is evident in the masking panel by Invert being selected after an intersect mask is added and why Subtract is added to the History step...

Camera Raw has the exact same features for masking as Lightroom. You could do everything still in Photoshop. Your last example for highlights, you might get better results in Photoshop using BlendIf to target only the bright areas. Select your subject then use a curves/level/exposure layer clipped to the subject and then BlendIf.

But if I want to stay in Lightroom OR I only use Lightroom then it can be done this way. I know how to use blend if etc … this is showing how I can get an effect I’m happy with and still stay in Lightroom

100% agree with what you have eloquently shown. Having become almost an expert in Photoshop and slightly looked down on "mere" Lightroom editors, I find the various combinations of masks, including subtract and add, plus the even newer feature of being able to invert a complex combination of masks, on top of the ability to select ONLY on the basis of luminance or colour into the rich mix.... it is all really tranformative. Of course a whole raft of techniques still require Photoshop such as the ever-more-common blending of images (though Lightroom can also do some of these procedures!), content-aware fill and any canvas extensions (such as in macro when you want to crop and change the angle, leaving an emtpy triangle at the edge which you then fill. Or occasionally when the subject or sky algorithms don't pass muster (usually very impressive though).... Anyway, I am using Lightroom so so much more that I am in danger of getting out of practice with advanced Photoshop techniques! Thanks for the great and timely video...

That's so good of you to say ... thank you. Yeah agree with everything you say ... LR is coming along at such a pace and I too am finding I don't need to go into PS for takes I always had to in the past. However, the more complex stuff...yeah PS all day long...well...for now at least 😃
