This Hippie Girl Found Jesus - A Haunting Beautiful 1960s Testimony

I post here another longform interview which my subscribers have asked for. I have posted clips from her interview previously. As many of you know, back in 1989, my team and I did almost 200 interviews with Americans who had lived through and experienced the 1960s. This woman's thoughtful interview stood out for me. So real. So poignant. So personal. So well spoken. About 3% of the baby boomers considered themselves hippies (at most). This woman was unquestionably a hippie and live that lifestyle until she found Jesus and became a Christian. I appreciate her candor and clarity and do not share her name without her permission, which I do not have. My younger subscriber commentators sometimes ascribe behaviors to the hippies which are incorrect. They seem to call everyone who looked like a hippie a hippie but the hippie lifestyle was uniquely different from the political radicals of that time, the kids growing up who grew their hair long and wore beads, etc. I was a working professional filmmaker in the 1960s and never engaged in the hippie lifestyle although I knew some of my colleagues who did. They "dropped out." I had a child and was married and was building my film company. When I came across hippies who one occasion, still lived in the cities, their lifestyle frightens me as I did not really understand it. But when I was making my documentary series for television, Making Sense Of The Sixties in 1990, I came to interview folks like this woman and to understand what they felt and how they lived better.

I'm having difficulties describing what it feels like to listen to these human beings sharing their incredible experiences. Their unique perspectives give color to a distant past that later generations might otherwise struggle to understand. For many of us who were born in the time after these events took place this is one of the few ways we're able to reach out and touch the past and to view these events through their eyes, to understand how these people had the rug pulled from underneath them and the ways they struggled to get back on their feet again. Your channel and these incredible interviews of people who decided to share their life experiences with us are true gift, David. I can honestly say that this is priceless in the true meaning of the word.

I'm in my 60's, I spent my whole childhood in the care system, and the early days of my life were especially traumatic as I spent time in the Father Hudsons care home which was run by priests and nun's. I witnessed child abuse that would these days be considered unlawful. Because of this I hated anything to do with the church and God and ultimately grew up an absolute atheist. My belief has always been that all religion was written by man for man for self policing purposes but I did grow up with a code of conduct that kept me out of trouble with the law, when I came across people later in adult life that would be considered abusers or bad people, I took the law into my own hands and delt out punishment that I believed would best suited to teaching these bad people that their actions and attitude towards others was not only wrong but made them fear that there was always going to be people like me that didn't follow any religious beliefs and therfore had no problem dishing out a punishment to make them stop and think about choices they were making that were impacting other people's lives that was totally unacceptable. I never killed anyone but did torture a few before handing them over to police. I have no regrets about that especially as the the punishment I dished out was more severe and thought provoking to them than anything in the way punishment that was given to them by our legal system. I have had a fairly good career that wasn't as financially rewarding as it could have been and I changed my career a few times after making choices based on principle rather than accept some of the poor practices laid down by companies in the name of profit and unaccountably. I always stuck to my beliefs in the hope that I made a difference. I have never looked for, or found God because I see the state of our world with all the suffering and still can't believe any God would allow this if they ever existed. I find everyone who mentions God and wants to forgive bad people even to this day nieve to the experiences of life and what it brings to all of us.

I met a robed figure along an interstate service station in New York. (It's like a glorified rest stop for anyone that doesn't know) I believe I was having a heart attack or something. My mind and body felt like it was preparing to die. I was on my way back home to Florida. I couldn't handle what was happening to me and I didn't have health insurance and had only enough gas money to get back home. I wasn't calling an ambulance. I closed my eyes and instinctively prayed to Jesus. ( I'm NOT Christian or religious) There was a man standing in front of me as clear as day. Robe over his head and down his arms. And then there was a beautiful brilliant white light. Can't describe it. After that... I remember waking up. Hours had gone by and the sun was starting to rise. I had no issues. Nothing. I felt like a new person. For the record, I was having severe health issues prior that I never went to a doctor... and never had them again after that night in New York.

In the 60's our paperboy was my cousin. He'd stop to talk a couple of minutes when he dropped the evening paper off and my mom would sometimes give him a soda to take on his route through the neighborhood. One day he lingered on the porch, much longer than usual and my mom could see he was troubled by something. He said we are moving to Arizona for his job( we are in NY) and he didn't want to go. Of course my mom and my brother and me said," you'll be ok, you'll make new friends" ect. Trying to boost his mood. He said "no, I don't want to go because we are going to be killed on the highway". Of course my mom discounted it as fear of moving ect. (I'm getting chills recounting this story). A couple of weeks later they did leave NY and drove to Arizona. They did get into a motor vehicle accident. A semi crossed the double line at night and hit them head on and my cousin and his dad was killed instantly.( Edit- his dad's job in Arizona)

@@Awakeningspirit20 I identify with your struggle, friend. A lot of the professing church has been misled and the church as a whole seems hopelessly fractured. I, too, once felt like an outcast who was called to much greater things. Nevertheless, if you feel called by God to be a prophet or a leader, then I recommend picking up a Bible of your choice and reading it again, or at the Torah and the Prophets. Let the Lord guide you in understanding what it tells you, with a humble heart, and you’ll find a wellspring of understanding in relation to the mysteries of life. Especially the prophets, their words provide images and even methods of spiritual understanding. A prophet isn’t a prophet by his desire to be one, but rather by the depth of his understanding of God’s manifest will in the world. They speak in images of an ancient culture that still speaks to us today and for all ages. The book of Proverbs, in its simplicity, is also a good guide to start with. The Lord is eternal, and within us, and His wonders are there for everyone to see if only they want to see it. Those who do see it are like vessels into which abundant water flows without ever breaking or rusting over. The New Testament is also of immense value to the one who knows God, but it’s significance can’t be spoken in plain terms, and the masses must take it literally to bolster their faith. And for some, that is good enough, so long as they repent from evil and do good according to their capacity to understand and do so. In all cases, we need to be merciful toward one another in our faults. I hope that you find encouragement and are lifted up by your virtue and belief in God, and I hope that He works a wonder in your life. Many Christians and Jews believe that prophecy is over, that it ended long ago, but that’s not the case. We live in a unique time, my friend. If you want to understand, then knock, and knock again, and the door will be opened to you. Clearly, you can think for yourself. So God bless you, and I hope you uncover the truth and find your purpose, whether it’s in the church or anywhere else. You are a child of the Living God, who loves you dearly. Remember that. :)

This really resonated with me. I'm not Christian or even really spiritual but I consider myself open minded. I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness which is incredibly strict and dogmatic. Their rules go and when I left as a teen I was just completely turned off all things religion. Upset about it. My life is a mess lately, and I've been interested in learning about my old religion which also made me interested in spirituality itself. I've been wanting to read the bible as an adult to get a new perspective and make my own opinion. Feel like this video convinced me to do that. I love how calm and thoughtful her responses are. I love that she isn't regretful of her past, and tries to not judge others. I'm the opposite personality wise in some ways, I'm pretty chaotic in my speech but I related so much to her. I'm very happy to have watched this.

If I might offer a gift of knowledge to you. If you decide to read the Holy Bible. Pick up the King James Version. Not the 1611 or the new KJV but the original. At first it is hard to understand but pressing on the knowledge will appear with prayer. The new versions of the Bible are remade for easy to understand as they say but have polluted the truth of the word. They added to it and took out the treasure of its real meaning which in turn put one in subject of the Government of the land and making you be in bondage to the law of their manmade inturpretation.. I hope you will find the freedom of Christ and his magnificent truth as this woman did..

Yes, read the Bible for yourself. Just not the watchtower version JW’s use. They change critical things. Many versions are good though. ESV, NASB, NIV, NKJV are some good ones. And Christianity should be about a relationship with Christ and not a works-based religion. You can’t work your way into heaven. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:8-9‬ ‭NIV‬‬ www.bible.com/111/eph.2.8-9.niv Blessings!

Thankfully God didn't give up on me and rescued me when I needed Him most. Couldn't remain an atheist after that :) All praise be to God

It's nice to see someone who's willing to admit their narrow-minded mindset, and also try not to impose their beliefs on others. It seems to be that it's more common for everyone to think that their religion is the most rightest one and no other could be the one true one.

I really hope that this sweat woman found a family, etc. She had a lot to offer a husband and children, through living so much life. It made her intelligent about life. As a now middle-aged man in my 40s, I would rather be with someone like her than a go-getter type, overly concerned with expensive things. She seems to know what life is about.

Wonderful story went through this awakening myself last year July 11, 2020 feels amazing like I woke up after over a decade my mind is clear now I know who I am and my purpose now and that there is a God he was always there patiently waiting for me to welcome him back into my life with open arms he was waiting never left me alone although I felt like I was during those dark years of atheism, liberalism, and drug culture I truly believe personally that I was in the grasps of the devil then and so are so many people sadly 😟 but don't loose faith if you find yourself still stuck in a similar position as this woman and myself were because the lord is with you with us always he has never abandoned us don't forget those evil thoughts and feelings self doubt the constant internal battle between good and evil is the devil ignore him push that away he's lying to you. God bless everyone have a wonderful safe weekend 😊

I’m happy for her, that she found her path of spirituality. I too had a deep and intensive search during the 60s, and the most important thing I learned was that the Divine speaks many languages, just as we do. We find our spiritual home in the language that touches us in heart and soul. All faiths carry beauty and love at their core. In 1967 I found the right path for myself, and I have walked it ever since. I am a worshipper of the ancient Gods and Goddesses, and serve as one of Their Priestesses to this day. I believe that ALL Gods exist, and there is wisdom and fulfillment in truly embracing the practice of what faith fills and guides one through life. Thank you for sharing this lovely woman with us.🖤🇨🇦

The Lord Christ became my savior and lord when I was a kid of six years. All through the 1960s, I knew there was something profound which was missing in the lives of my contemporaries. Following the sudden death of my beloved father, it could have been so very easy to find myself enthralled with the counter-culture (drugs, sex, far eastern philosophy, et al. The Old and New Testament and The Holy Spirit kept me grounded in Christian doctrine, so alternative "religions" never took hold on my life. It was as if Jesus told me, "All of these man-made beliefs are false, they are humanistic and they lead people to Hell." Jesus; being The Creator of The Cosmos; never consumed any substance which would addle His mind. I thought likewise. I still do. I know of quite a few hippies who took part in the so-called Christian "New Birth Movement" during the late 1960s/early 1970s. Some folks were just "joy-popping" for Jesus -- an emotional (only) encounter. Others were certain and sincere in their salvation via Christ and growth in their walk with Christ. This lady's testimony is wonderful. Thank you, David Hoffman. The Lord Jesus Christ be with all of us -- now, until the end of the age of man and for all Eternity.

Its interesting how people scoff at the Christian God because of some personal let down they have had, Or issues they have had with so called followers. God never claimed himself a genie and the only place he said he would be found is the human heart. The litmus test for any follower is when Jesus said, "we will know them by their love and their fruit." He even showed us that we had to belive before we could see his great kingdom. People go to great lengths to find God in ways that God never told us we could and then become spiteful towards God when they don't find what they are looking for. God certainly is not dead just as much as many of so called Christians are followers of Christ. But once you find the real deal it will change your life forever!

Hello Mr. Hoffman--my father was indeed one of those few who truly dropped out, and sounds just like this woman when he describes his growth of disillusionment with those around him after years of heavy drugs and no progress but barely keeping a roof over his own (and others who hung around) head. His journey out of San Francisco is so similar in milestones to this fascinating woman, with the exception of finding the way back to Catholicism/Christianity. This interview is so special to me now. It means he wasn't alone in seeing his situation and slowly painfully righting his own ship from the drop out. I'm sharing this with him after I finish writing this. Thank you, truly.

This is an interesting anecdotal experience that seems to epitomize the middle class flower child experience. Self-destructive behaviors and grasping at vague Eastern spiritualism, then returning to a middle class lifestyle under the false pretence that they are now following some kind of "enlightened" version of Christianity. She talks about her experience like it is so unique to her, but it echoes all the sentiments of the rechristianized hippies I have met.

In 1980, when I personally decided to stop doing drugs and drinking because of health ramifications, was the same time that I found out that I had absolutely nothing to talk about or in common with any of the people that I always hung around with. It was very sobering. Though I became a Christian less than 2 years later, and down the line, a minister's wife, I eventually concluded that that might have not been the best direction either. I'm not sure if I know where I am right now. But does it really matter?

Being born in '55, and into the "Hippie Lifestyle", I too, wasted so much of my life and ruined my marriage to my highschool sweetheart, in which we had two children, two boys. And my destructive behavior didn't end there... Many years of drug and alcohol abuse, destroying my physical and mental health. Much happened throughout the years... But I was reunited with my wife in 2006... After years of being apart, we agreed to be better grandparents than we were as parents. In 2013, we moved back to the state of Georgia where we had grown up... Bought a house and property... Life was good... Two months later, she passed away from a massive stroke... After a couple of years, I decided to sell the property... I just couldn't be there without her...
