Hydrangeas are easily among our favorite plants we grow. This one in particular, the Oakleaf 'Ruby Slipper,' is a standout. We've got to get these growing so they are ready to sell NEXT year!

Those are looking great! I was just telling my wife yesterday that I have several of those ruby slippers that I want to get planted out in the landscape so we can have them for future cuttings. You guys are doing a great job over there! Keep up the good work.

Hey could you possibly do a video of year round car for cuttings? I have started several cuttings but I’m all over the place on how long different things take to root and when I need to put in bigger pots, what plants need to be covered in winter? I hate to kill off my plants from the very start. I think I have a handle on the pruning by doing that to plants during dormancy? I guess what I’m looking for is start to finish steps on different plants/trees? Like hosta for example when to take cuttings? How long before they’re ready to pot, should they be misted, cover at thus and such date, uncover by when? I hope I’m not being confusing lol. I’m just needing to do more homework I suppose.

I rarely disturb the roots of a rootbound plant when potting up. Everyone says you should, but mine always do great without.

Question- Are you saying that planting in a smaller container initially, and then repotting when rootbound is actually better fo the plant than starting in the larger pot? I want to plant some baby lilacs in containers and keep them for a couple years and then either sell them or put them in their permanent spot. And they are so tiny when I get them. Like a foot tall. I am not sure if I should just put them in the container they'll eventually want, or start small... and just how small???
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer Жыл бұрын
I don't know if it's better, but plants do respond well to it. And, it saves space to grow them as long as you can in smaller pots. The negative is having to pot, then pot again, and again, depending on how large you want it to grow before selling.

It boggles my mind, trying to keep all the schedules. Take cuttings of this now, grow for X months, repot for one year, repot bigger for one year, then sell. Now multiply that by however many plants one has! How do you keep it all straight in the day-to-day as well as plan for two years down the road? It feels like “To infinity and beyond!” 😂
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer Жыл бұрын
There is some degree of that, but it's not really how I do it. I look around every day and say, "what do I need to do today?" Take cuttings? Pot up next year's hydrangeas? Give some attention to some rootbound coral bells? Order more of something? And I just do it. Sometimes those projects take weeks. Sometimes hours. But it's all just a matter of keeping everything going that you started. The plants will tell you when it's time to do the next thing.
