This piece is called Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck. Joris van der Paele was a wealthy canon of St Donatian Church in Bruges and the man who commissioned this painting. He was very rich but very unwell and thought he was going to die and so he hoped that in creating this painting he could keep his soul alive forever in heaven.
We’re placed in a church with Mary, baby Jesus, St. Donatian, St. George and Joris van der Paele (and a parakeet). Van der Paele appears to have been praying just moments ago. Perhaps the scene before us depicts a vision that came to the Canon during one of his prayer sessions. He likely created this painting also as a sort of medical certificate to excuse him from his duties at church that he was unable to carry out due to his ill health.
Jan van Eyck has injected so much detail in this painting that doctors today have been able to diagnose the canons exact ailments: polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. I hope you all love looking at all of the amazing detail in this painting like I do. Thanks for watching!

I love your videos but I've never felt such a personal bond to a painting before. I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) 7 years ago, but thanks to modern steroid treatment I'm now free of both conditions. So I can empathise with the intense pain, fatigue and immobility that Joris van der Paele suffered every day. Of course he could afford the most expensive medical treatment of the day, but it was probably so useless he would have been better off without it.

The "cloth" that you describe as protecting the book is actually a leather cover that is folded around the book and extends beyond the book to form a bag-like structure to.protect it. It is also used to hang the book from a belt. You can see examples in museums and other paintings.

What a treat it is to pop open the laptop and see that you have posted a new video! This one was just as interesting as all the other ones you've made. I don't think I have seen this painting before. Or, at least not that I can remember very clearly. There are pieces of it that feels familiar, but I can't really discern if it's because I have seen this beautiful painting before or just me mixing up this one with some other piece of art from this time period/in this style. Nevertheless, it's a gorgeous painting and your commentary is just fantastic! This really is one of my absolute favorite channels on all of KZfaq.

The depiction of the carpet, the hanging behind the Virgin is extraordinary…the entire painting is a tour de force. Always fascinated by this painting even as a child…there’s so much to see. It has even more meaning since I’ve spent over 20 years disabled by multiple autoimmune and neurological disorders. The treatments are better than he would have had but still very mixed in the results.

Two things: Sorry, that's not cloth between his hands and the book. It looks more like a cloth bound book, so the cloth is integrated into the book cover. You take a "normal" book with wooden covers and it geht's sewn in into precious textile like silk. Or it is even a girdle book, where you also add more material (leather or cloth) to the book covers, but you keep one side longer, so you can carry it. This version would also make the book to a personal prayer book and even add to the importance of it. And second: at that time period glasses usually were reading glasses, so it's quite normal that he wouldn't use them to look at Mary. It's not the right type of lenses to look at things further away.

I have admired Jan van Eyck since I was a young art student standing in front of the spectacular Arnolfini wedding portrait in the National Gallery, London.. (I loved your presentation of that portrait too!) I wish we had more facts about this revolutionary genius! So little is known about Van Eyck's early life and neither the date nor place of his birth is documented.. and yet he has always been a huge inspiration to me! Thank you for this exceptional video.. 👏👌

This is one of my favorite paintings. Good job on the presentation. I will say though, that many books from this time period had cloth attached to the cover, so that you could wrap the book in the cloth when not in use. They didn't survive the centuries though, many of those books were rebound later on.
