I remember 7 or 8 years ago this being one of the most important exercises that let me start to see and hear connections between changes, in real time. In fact when in clicks into place, efficiently moving chord tones through a progression makes even scary charts approachable at sight - and no large patterns or muscle memory required! It’s hard work but pays off massively and long term, lets you easily analyse vocab and build freedom with your playing. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas for future videos!

Hi David! I cannot NOT enjoy a lesson of fretboard knowledge specially if its intervalic approach. Been playing for 15 years and I'm still learning so much. I been learning interval visualization here and there for a while now since I first watch a video of Tom couple years ago. Certainly I need more work so it becomes "muscle memory" rather than active thinking but it's really a great approach at knowing the fretboard. One thing that I don't hear much about and I think it needs more emphasis with this approach is the fact that you NEED your root notes, so you need to learn the fretboard notes as first step. Anyway, this lessons was really helpful and its exactly the step I am working on right know when it comes to changes. I would love a part 2 where you take this idea a bit further and talk about phrasing and what you do after identifying the chord tones, how to create phrases between the chords targeting these notes. I am a bit lost there because this intervalic approach really helps me find the chord tones, but when it comes to create phrases or licks or make a melody for a chord, I feel like I need it to combine it with some common scale shapes or else I'd be thinking on too many things and intervals while playing. So yeah, not sure yet how to move forward. I follow you on Instagram and I always enjoy your licks and wonder how you come with such ideas, are you thinkning on intervals, shapes, scales, CAGED, 3np, etc? that would be a nice part 2 for this. Cheers man!

Hey Andres, thanks for watching and the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video. You're spot on about root notes. That has to be instantaneous for the two point interval system to work, but it is totally achieveable. tom and I dedicate the first chunk of the new course to working with root notes and the 2.0 update to the iOS version of solo specifically includes a root note trainer as well. Root notes are the foundation! That's a good idea for a part 2, but I'll need to think on the best way to appraoch in within a mini 15-20 minute lesson format. This approach needs to become subconscious so that it inspires the melodies you're hearing etc. There's definitely something there though for a good video, thanks again for watching. :)

I remember playing over 'Joy Spring' at a jam. I'd never herd it before, but there were 2 horn players and a keyboard, 'regulars' reading charts, with me as guest, so with the head and 3 solos ahead of me, I'd heard it 4 times. I'd recognised the form and played ok, so I thought I have that sorted. A couple of weeks later when it was called, I wasn't phased, but messed up the descending part, ditto weeks later so I decided to have a closer look. I tracked down as many recorded versions as I could, and although on the descending bit, the changes were being 'made', none of it was very interesting, so my tip if you do get a good line (or lines) working with that descending Joy Spring bit, transcribe it (or them)! YMMV.

Thanks! Really glad you are enjoying the course. There's certainly no shortcut to solid fretboard knowledge, it all takes a lot of work however you go about it, but the two-point approach massively helped me get over the difficulty hump and is objectively less things to memorise at least! Sorry the promo specific discount codes have to be applied at checkout, if you're signed up to either my mailing list or the solo mailing list you'll get notified of any future offers. Thanks again for watching/using solo dude! :)

Do you still think in intervals in real time when playing through the changes? (Eg "im targeting the 3rd, this becomes the b7, I'll then hit the 5th of the next chord etc" or do you now just hear melodic ideas in your head when soloing and they come out naturally? If the latter, then when did this transition happen for you? Maybe it's not as simple as moving from one process to the other and the two things are intertwined? Hope that makes sense. Cheers!
@DavidBeebee
@DavidBeebee 5 ай бұрын
Man what a question! It's so hard to know definitively, but I think you're probably on to something with the later, it's intertwined or maybe dependant on the familiarity or complexity of the context. Obviously the goal is to be led by the ear and not to be thinking consciously, but this kind of hard work is what makes the skill seep to the subconscious back of the brain. I mean, I'm certainly not having to think of the chord tones to something like Autumn Leaves in the forefront of my mind, I've done it so many times. But if say I spun the wheel and played real book roulette then I'd probably have to think more consciously over a harder less familiar set of changes I'd never seen before. The awesome thing about this exercise and the skills you build is it becomes possible to play over pretty complex things at sight. It might not be great, or the most musically inspired but it's a satisfying and useful ability to have at times!

Great lesson. I also found vocalizing what I'm playing very crucial, be it intervalic function or note name (yes we guitarists have it painful to learn note names) - it is one of principles of efficient learning, repeating what you just learnt. As for the lesson, I was playing with my guitar on 1st example You chose Eb which is 3 of Cm7. Then Eb from 5 became flat 7 of F7 chord. Then we have Bbmaj7 and Eb which is 4 does not fit there, so we shift down 1 step to D which becomes M3. Then we have Ebmaj7 and D is 7 there. For Ao7 D is not part of the chord so we shift right 1 fret to Eb again which is flat5. For D7b9 Eb is there being flat9, but you dropped to 1 which id D. And lastly for G chord D was 5. Then you repeated with 5 instead of 3. What was the aim of this lesson? To play on 1 string through chord changes or to get better on visualizing notes as intervalic functions with regards to chord being played? At 10:31 you are playing Eb which is part of chord D7b9, but you dropped to D - was there a particular reason, why you wanted to stick to 1 3 5 7?

Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Vocalising is HUGE. I remember first coming across the idea in a book called music reading for guitar a musicians institute publishing by a guy called David Oakes. It's a great book for learning to read traditional notation but aimed at electric guitar players. He made a big deal about looking at your hands and vocalising out loud the note names. It made an enormous difference for and many of my students. When I was getting into changes playing and intervalic visualisation I just carried this approach through of always saying out lout what I was doing so my brain didn't wander off! Aim of the lesson is that latter, its to get that big picture, relaxed over view of how you can glue chord changes together with the smallest movements, and see and hear how the note you are playing is working against the chord. It's also training the ability to voice lead lines through the chords, rather than playing big shapes from the root ascending all the time for example. You could totally stay on the Eb (b9) over the D, I think I mention in the video it is in the chord, but yea I just wanted to keep things more straight fwd and stay to the appropriate 1, 3, 5, 7. thanks again for watching :) Beebs

@@DavidBeebee looking forward to lessons following this one or in similar field. I got your SOLO app (Android version) - can you recommend me exercises to emphasize this lesson content?
@DavidBeebee
@DavidBeebee 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for using solo! Oh man you’ve just mad me realise I should have included a Solo exercise for this lesson. So, basically you could help train this by using the voice leading feature in the changes trainer. This works for solo iOS or solo Android: Load up say autumn leaves and choose the level R 3 5 7 Then set interval order to random, this will then let you switch on voice leading. This will essentially guide you through what I’m doing in this video, and of course you get the added confirmation of solo checking it off as you go. Kicking myself didn’t think of this earlier! 😹

I was wondering if you guys are ever going to release solo as VST plugin or a desktop application perhaps? it would be really convenient to have the app in my DAW while I'm practicing with some software FX on. I guess another benefit would be that I could have a metronome running in the back while I practice over some of the material in the app itself.
