A buddy of mine was in the Marines. He kept failing asleep during some lecture or something, so the drill instructor gave him a smoke grenade and pulled the pin and handed it to him. “Hold this. Don’t let go. Maybe this will keep you awake.”. So he’s sitting there with a smoke grenade and no pin. A few minutes later he still fell asleep and let go of the smoke grenade.

The handle is and has been in the same position and the pin keeps it in the same position too so you can put on some rubber bands you can screw it in the bomb or just put the pin back to keep the handle in the same position so that the bomb doesn't explode

When I was little I had a fake plastic grenade and I was showing my grandfather who fought in WW2. Being 5, I didn't know how to hold it and when I pretended to pull the pin he yelled at me, gripped my hand around the spoon firmly and said "You grip it like this until you throw it". Still one of the most vivid memories I have of him.
