This airport is corrupt.I flew in from Senegal and immigration refused to stamp my passport unless I gave here a thousand dalasi,the scamming starts as soon as you arrive in this country.I had paid my tourist tax and she claimed I had to give her a thousand too. I was tired and the only Caucasian on the flight. I still have her initials on my passport stamp but these may not be her real initials but I can remember her face.I will get justice and intend to report this

Sorry you had that experience, that is totally unacceptable and illegal. Airport tax in and out supposed to be only $20 each way. If this happens again or to anyone reading this, take your phone out and start recording......you will soon see how quick they say " oh its ok" or whatever. Hope you get justice.

@@SandysWorld64 Yes airport tax I paid and accepted. I had been queuing at immigration for a long time and was concerned about my luggage being taken as i knew it would already be off the plane. If I'd had someone travelling with me then I'd of made a scene.I then had my luggage searched and security and customs were trying to scam me,nightmare. I wouldn't think this happens so much to tourists on a package flight but I had come from Senegal and was the only European on the plane

@Truthful Travel reports I understand you not making a scene as a lone traveller as if anything happened to you, no one would know, and you probably couldn't even use your mobile to call until you got a sim card for the country. Not a nice start to your trip at all and it will put many people off for life. I've had similar experience at Norman Manley Airport Jamaica my luggage wasn't even on the plane 😶 they wanted my luggage keys for when it came on the next flight they could check it and send to the hotel......I said " I might be British but I'm no damn fool. Tell me when my luggage arrives and I'll come" then they wanted more money for the privilege of locating my luggage, I told them no way and asked for the supervisor or Airport manager they soon said OK. Anyway long story, got my luggage back intact, unopened next day. Corruption is everywhere, fortunately only few practice it. I hope your experience didn't put you off The Gambia as I love the country, and the majority are beautiful, peaceful people.

They take 1000dalasi airport tax for coming into the country and after again for leave .they invest this money for nonsense things but no AC in the airport.what a shame.this was my first and last visit to gambia.

Who told you it was for modernizing the airport? Cos that makes no sense as the modernization had it's own budget. I'm afraid the tax we pay on entry is gonna continue lol.

When I payed the entry tax, I asked the man who took my money, he said it was to modernise the airport, he also told a couple in our hotel the same.

Great question but once you try to bring that issue up all this misinformed people try to come at you, and that one of the reasons we remain to be the most underdeveloped country in Africa

Yeah, great question! Blame the leaders we've had, except Sir Dawda, because Gambia is richer now than it's ever been but they want to make us believe otherwise.

@@marcybashiru24 actually D1000, £20 and $20 all convert to different amounts, I'm from UK and never pay in pounds because the exchange is more than the dollar and converted to dalasi it's D1,467.00. So the cheapest option is do the maths and pay in dalasi 💁🏽‍♀️

I agree. I've been to small countries where they have a simple but effective airport. Charging people €20 or $20 for the airport development fee is simple daylight robbery when the toilets in the airport don't flush and you can't wash your hands afterwards because there is no running water. Disgraceful!
