I recently tried to build a 'Super Bike" from a vintage steel frame. I got it down to exactly 7.6kgs. It's a '96 Colnago Tecnos, which I stripped to the bare metal, removing not just paint but chrome and nickel as well, and then polished and treated it with a crystalline wax just to stop any oxidization and give it a nice glow. It's built up with a carbon fork, CK headset, Dura Ace 7900 series mechs, controllers and rim brakes, a 90's Dimension stem with vintage 3T Podium bars and Grebb tape. Lightweight Meilensteins with Conti 25mm tubulars really take it to another level. And a Thompson Masterpiece ti seat post and a vintage Selle Italia Flite TT saddle to finish it off. Super fun to build and rides like a dream! Thanks for your videos....very inspirational.

Firstly, as a pro mechanic let me say you did a great job building this bike up, some great attention to detail. Only thing missing was facing and chasing the bb. I’d normally do this whenever I get a frame back from a new paint job. Secondly, those brakes are sick. Never seen them before but 👌Steel is real!
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks a lot. I might frame this comment as motivation for the next builds 🫶. When you speak about facing the bb does this mean to chase the thread with one of these cutting tools? As i ve done this on one of my previous bikes but somehow got lost on the recording flow i guess for this one. 🫣
@OjStudios
@OjStudios Жыл бұрын
Chasing usually for threads, facing is the outer edge of tubing recut with a tool to get a perfect straight fit for the BB.

@@klein-concept Also headtube can be faced, or any other "tube faces" which receive any kind of bearing. Usually helps with uneven wear, noises and whatnot. Especially after repainting a frame this is adviceable.

Fantastic build and video. I recently bought a late 90s Bianchi with a bunch of old Suntour components on it. I rebuilt it with a mixture of new components. Ultegra cassette and derailleurs, SRAM break levers, Dura-Ace bar-end shifters (relatively cheap on sale and I actually love the look of bar end shifters on drop bars), Shimano crankset, BB and wheels (non-line, just Shimano Series). It's a bit of a frankenstein build but man does it ride nice on some slick 25mm and it truly is a one of a kind. Looking for my next vintage/retro steel frame to upcycle now that I have the tools.

I think you put the piece of housing near the rear derailleur in reverse. The ferrule with the long "tongue" should go in the chainstay. This explains also why you couldn't fit the ferrule in the cable stop: it was the ferrule that it was supposed to go in the rear derailleur (that has a wider cable stop).
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Жыл бұрын
I actually tried that as well as i didnt want to sand down the paint first. But there was just too much paint stuck in the cable stop. But you are right. Afterwards i should have used that one with the long tongue. Might actually update that next time i change cables. Thanks for the hint 🤜🤛

I don't get why everyone gets so obsessed with weight. Yeah a 40 lbs bike is going to be tough for climbing I get that but if your bike is under 20 lbs IMO it's a great bike. I love round tubes better than the carbon boxy looking shapes that come with false claims of compliance and stiffness and still flex the same as any other bike is going to flex. Best thing about the bike you just built it is will last you the rest of your life which is something no one can say about a carbon bike unless they never ride it. I moved away from carbon bikes two years ago because I broke enough frame and carbon parts to learn my lesson and I had a custom frame builder build me a titanium frame to my exact specifications. I really think it is a lot better to look at than any carbon bike I ever had. And because it weighs a couple of pounds more I think it rides a lot more comfortable too. Anyway, that's a very nice looking bike and I hope it brings you lots of joy.
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Charles. I fully agree. All the carbon stuff is just made to be thrown away at some point. While i still enjoy an aero carbon frame at times but i love to have a great steel bike mainly because i dont worry about that something could brake if somebody knockes their car keys against it 😂😂😂. I was mainly highlighting the weight here to show people that a steel frame does not need to weigh 10kg but can compete with a modern carbon bike when you pick the right frame and components.

Thanks a lot Richárd. Glad you like it. I actually only measured it roughly with the measurements which have been provided online. @@klein-concept cool! Thats usually my final push before deciding to buy a new bike or part, I always could sell it, which i never do :D My other question is that have you weigh the frame before building it? It really seems like a pretty nice ride!
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Жыл бұрын
@@kelemenrichard hehe i know and i might keep this one as well as it rides amazingly with a 110mm stem. Need to see what my gf thinks about that idea 🫣. Unfortunately i didnt weigh it before but i knew it was made out of Columbus Spirit tubes so that told me that it js pretty light and also the fork is fully carbon.
@lukaass57
@lukaass57 Жыл бұрын
Really nice build! Using channel locks to crimp the cables relaxes me a bit that you dont need the highend tools to do something like that When building such a bike with light weight in mind is there a threshold for the weight of the naked frame? Or is it acheivable just by making your wallet light weight while looking for components?
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Жыл бұрын
Yes no need to crazy expensive tools. At least in my opinion. It is a good question regarding the frame. I think frame weight also plays into it but unfortunately i didnt weigh the pure frame itself 🫣. With second hand components it is also doable without making your wallet all too light. I think overall this bike was around 2k euros. Not a bargain but given the low weight I think it is somehow acceptable.

28:19 that is the fork - so the wheel spins opposite of what you were showing and also, the brake cartridges face the wrong way... 28:46 your brake pads are the wrong way inside the (now correctly facing) cartridges - the curve of the pad should follow the curve of the rim they are going to touch while the brakes engage.
