I really enjoy your reactions and especially how you speak about the music on a higher level than any reactions I’ve seen. My only criticism, and I hope it is a constructive criticism, please correct me if you feel that not to be true. Is that this is not an album of songs, to really ‘get’ this album it needs to be listened to in its entirety, it is an exceptionally good album and I would love to see how you talk about the album and not just individual songs off the album. But despite what I have said, I am slightly autistic so hopefully my comment has been respectful, anything else is purely unintentional. Keep up your good work. It is quite different, in a good way, to other reaction channels. Apparently that recording was the first take and once she finished she asked if they wanted to her to try again. They said nope, you nailed it.

I'm old, and death is not too far in my future. A couple of decades ago I made one of the best decisions of my life. I decided that one of the worst things you can have in your life is regret, so I made it my mission to die with as little regret as I can. And when you boil it all down, there are two types of regret, one for things that you didn't do and wish that you had, and one for things that you did and wish you hadn't. As long as you're still sucking air you can still do many things that you wish you had and haven't yet done. It's the things that you did and wish you hadn't that are the hardest to reconcile because you can't undo or do-over those times, and sometimes the best you can hope to do is to apologize.

Still dealing with a rare disease that caused the lung fibrosis in the first place. Just trying to see my kids and grandkids as much as I can, then fishing and hitting the golfball around to keep me occupied! I made my peace with the lord when I was taken into the OR for surgery, so I have no fears anymore, as it’s just going to happen!

Your comments about time are very fitting. The song that precedes this on the album is called Time and explicitly explores those exact same topics about life and time. In fact the two songs listened together make even more sense. The whole album is an exploration of a journey through life.

One thing you will notice with Pink Floyd's music is that much of it is beyond magnificent and unlike anything, anyone else was doing. Plus none of their songs sound the same but all sound great and some are so legendary that they will be played as long as humans listen to music. This song is even better in the context of the album it comes from, Dark Side of the Moon. Do yourself a huge favor sometime and listen to the entire album, 40+ minutes, in a single sitting. You will be forever affected by this great album and those grand themes they examine are right up your alley. They have a great catalog, enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥

Pink Floyd played the album live in their concerts for a year before recording it in the studio. In that year they were able to refine it and then come up with the finishing touches in the studio. But they still couldn’t finish this song on their own. That’s when they asked for outside help and the rest (as they say) is history.

The singer, Claire Torrie, did not know the band when she was called to sing this. She first came in the studio and was singing words like "baby, baby" but she was told no words, and she realized they wanted her voice to be an instrument. She was given the notes and told the studio to record her first take because in her experience it is usually the best take. And it was. They were asking her to do more takes and she said no you got it. She declined more takes and just walked out the door. She didn't even know if it was liked. She didn't expect it to be used at all, and then one day she saw the album in the window of a store and that is when she learned they used her work. It was a great interview.

Nobody who has sung this since Claire Torrie sung it has gotten anywhere near the subtle nuances of her voice, even when they have had three singers in to do it! She got paid a pittance for this, which was a disgrace! It’s special to me because when my daughter was at Art college (music) she sang the part of Claire on her own when they performed the whole album for an end of the course performance. She got a standing ovation for her performance and I have to admit that I was in tears! I enjoyed your breakdown and analysis of the song and its performance, it made me realise some of the things about it that I’d never thought about.

I had a bean bag seat and mood lights in my room with a nice stereo I bought from Arnold and Morgan music store in Garland, Texas. Professional Musicians bought there equipment there. I lived with my parents close by and my older brother had an older wood frame house about 8 blocks away. One day he dropped off this black album with a prism with rainbow colors shooting out if it and told me to listen to it. I took it to my room and carefully pulled the vinyl from the sleeve. Then sat it down onto my hifi turntable, shut my curtains and turned on my mood lights as my big brother suggested. I turned the power on and the arm lifted up and set the stylus down on the groves of the black vinyl. I sat down on my bean bag and relaxed. Two hours later I showed up at my brother's house and handed him back the album as he opened his door. He said, "No, no you can keep it for a couple of weeks if you like it! Don't you like it?" A tear came to my eye as I said to my brother in his early 20s already, "I have already bought one for my own." As soon as I heard the first side I had ran through my neighborhood to a strip mall and ran into the Skillerns Drug Store. They sold a little bit of everything including popular albums. I had money from working in construction for my dad every summer and holidays. I was 14 and my parents didn't have to buy me anything. I bought two new vinyl Darkside of the Moon albums a couple of years ago. I still have the original album, eight track, cassette and cd versions. It is the only album I did that with. Pink Floyd and my brother changed the way I see life. Thank You James Roscoe and God Bless You All

I was at boarding school. Everybody had a stereo in their study, and a collection of LPs. You would walk from the door to the House and all the way to the library to half a dozen different accompaniments. If you wanted to borrow an LP, usually it would just be a matter of popping your head around the study door and asking. But the 2 or 3 guys who had DSotM would NEVER lend it out. Unless you could afford to buy your own copy (which meant 90% of the time waiting until the end of term) the only way you could listen to it was to to into someone else's study and surreptitiously hang around while it was being played.

Sidenote: Claire was paid out with 30$ for the studio work and did not know what will happen to her take. After the record was released she by accident found out at a record store that she was mentioned as singer of this song and was surprised. After years she got a fair share in a court decision. Also interesting: This song was not created on purpose, as none of the musicians of Pink Floyd had any plan on what she should sing. So in the first they just tried out what to do. After some fails she (Claire) herself decided to just sing as if her voice was an instrument. So she did two takes and during the third she just said it would not get better anyway and that was it. Great reaction as always Rosalie, Greetings from Germany

The playing is so emotional, I shed a few tears at first listen, before ever knowing the back story.

I pretty much like this story, not sure if it is true and who actually was it who told it : “The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd The vocals were done by a petite British lady studio singer brought in by the Producer Allan Parsons named Claire Torrie. She did not know what they wanted her to sing. David Gilmour suggested she use her voice like a Saxophone… it worked great. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call god. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. The speaking at the start was recorded at Apple records with various employees answering a list of questions next to a small recording machine. The question was…“Are You afraid Of Dying? This one was an elderly gentleman who was a janitor in the place. Roger thought it would fit in the song at the beginning so there it is. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. YOU LOVE GUITARS AND AMAZING VOCALS RIGHT? This song was secretly hidden from the entire world. Only a very few have heard or know about this song. Wait to you hear the vocals and the guitar from Neal Schon and voice of Steve Perry. You must listen to it at 7:27 P.M. Journey, song Suzanne. He is the singer of Don't stop believing.

How interesting, Beldin -- I have heard that story too. And that when Claire Torry emerged from the studio, having been somewhat confused about what he band actually wanted, she apologised for her effort, only to find Richard and the others totally enchanted, and the rest, as the saying goes, ' Is History' And what a history !! This album changed my life in 1973, and to this day ' The Great Gig In The Sky ' is transcendent for me, in a way that, maybe, no other song has been. I have not heard it for a while, and even right now, my entire psyche is basking in it. One note for Rosalie, the prism should not be referred to simply as a' triangle ', and it is ridiculous to call the coloured lights a rainbow. The correct terminology for light diffracted through a prism, is ' the light spectrum ' !

I don't know if I'm typical or unusual, but my death anxiety has changed over the decades of my life. When I was young if there was any anxiety it was just about my life ending. Then in my 30s it was more about how much of the future history I would miss seeing. In my 40s this "missing" feeling became more personal as I realised how my father missed seeing his grandchildren, as had his father before him, and I worried about all the future generations I'd miss. Now in my 60s my main anxiety is how my family will cope without me.

IMO, hands down combines THE most saddest, powerful and hauntingly beautiful elements wrapped up in one song unlike any other in music history. And as you correctly mentioned about the wailing of the GREAT Claire Torrey being the wail of trying to simultaneously accept/fight against pending death (e.g. maybe after learning about a terminal diagnosis, etc.). And then the wailing subsides, as the person eventually accepts his/her pending death. But after hearing this song MANY times over the years, my eyes still well up with emotion from listening to this masterpiece. As usual, great analysis by you, and glad you finally got to experience one of Floyd's vintage classics.

That up bend on the keyboard at the very end is something a lot people miss. But I’ve always felt it symbolized the final step of her spirit drifting into the ether at the exact moment of her death. It’s subtle but it’s right after her voice drifts away into complete acceptance of her leaving this earth and her body. Anyone else get that?

Pink Floyd does concept albums. This song follows a song called Time and in the song Time is a reprise from the song Breathe. Time would definitely be good for you to do.

Beautiful synopsis of life and death The fear that most have. Most won't allow themselves to even think about it. At my age (67) and not the best health I've had to come to grips that the end isn't all that far away. I just find comfort in looking back at all the great times and beautiful places I met and visited in my life. Very few regrets (and really no use in having those). Wonderful topic.....

An amazing piece of music and well reacted to by you. Each section is perfectly designed and was implemented by Claire Torry perfectly. Fear, Acceptance and Peace Just before the last section you can hear a whisper it says "if you can hear this you are dying". This whisper is something that after listening to the songs for 30 years I have never really noticed before, now I can't not hear it. Great reaction to an absolute masterpiece.

You opened this up to a perfect Segway. React to Time from the very same album (Dark Side of the Moon). Pink Floyd was know more as a psychedelic rock band and their albums are best appreciated by listening to them from start to finish as they are theme based and tell a story.

Yes, you really should listen to the album in its entirety, but in particular, you should listen to this song along with the song that precedes it, Time. Time is about the progression of life and the time passing you by as it progresses, through stages of youth, the rat race of middle age and career, retirement and dying. Right as it hits the part about dying, it melds into The Great Gig in the Sky - the song about death and stages of grief. These two songs are really two parts of one song - which are part of an entire concept album.

Interesting what you bring up with our anxiety with time ticking and death coming because on the album the song just before transitionning into great gig int the sky is called Time. It talks about that. Listen to it, it is one of their biggest masterpieces. Anyway, as others will tell you, you can listen to the whole album at once because it was meant to be heard as a whole piece of art.

The Great Gig in the Sky. In essence, the Dark Side of the Moon album deals with death. "The Great Gig in the Sky," in particular, and in the different verses, touches on each stage of grief and how we as free willed human beings deal with Death. An event that all of humanity is destined to experience at one point in time or another, be it in the realization of our own impending doom, or the death of a loved one. Depending on each individual's level of compassion and acceptance of death, persistent, traumatic grief can cause us to cycle (to some people quickly, to others slowly) through the 5 stages of grief: *denial, *anger, *bargaining, *depression, *acceptance. These stages are our minds attempt to process the change brought along by the loss of a loved one, or the acceptance of our own mortality and to protect our sanity while we adapt to our new reality. Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky is about such a journey. The opening lyrics start with denial, and the closing lyrics end with acceptance. Listen carefully and you can spot each stage in the song.

Yes, today was a “deep” day. Great analysis by you, by the way. If you stick with Floyd, you will have many such “deep days”. This band provides one of the most philosophical, existential experiences you can have from popular music. You say you haven’t listened to them much. I would urge you to change that…..This album should be listened to in its entirety. It makes quite a profound statement about life.

I was 13 when this came out Remember laying on the floor in the living room with big bulky headphones … eyes closed … feeling the music and her voice Art affects everyone in a different way, for me it felt like three stages The first was fear and pain ( of dying) Second felt like what some people say … “floating above your own body” trying to make sense of it The third and last felt more like an acceptance Thank you for your reaction!!! Good, but the WHOLE album needs to be listened to in its entirety to see how it all hangs together.
