The funniest thing about these commercials is, they ran on the beginning of a VHS tape. So no matter what they tell you about how sharp the picture or sound is, the picture and sound you witness in the commercial is VHS grade.

That's actually true. Wow. Never thought of that, but you're absolutely right. I'd give you a delta if this was change my view. That was a great point. But that doesn't negate the fact the actual quality is better. It's up to how they want to market it. But you could literally see and hear the difference for yourself after you bought the item. The commercial can be VHS grade. But the actual thing that you bought is better than VHS grade.

Even though Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD are FAR superior, you can tell DVD has left more of an impact on people, because they're still releasing movies on DVD to this day.
@dasimonds6 жыл бұрын
I think a major reason for that is that Blu-ray was just introduced too late to catch on fully in my opinion. Blu-rays and HD DVD's came out around 2006 when most people made the final switch from VHS (which 2006 was the year most stores stopped selling them) to DVD for watching movies. Both HD DVD and Blu-ray competed to sell who would replace DVD's. The Second Format War ended in 2008 with Blu-ray emerging as the winner, most likely due to HD DVD failing to catch on due to it being confused with regular DVD's. However, instead of completely replacing DVD, Blu-ray would coexist with DVD's and this is probably for a few reasons. 1:The Timing: Time goes by so fast nowadays! It was only a couple of years after people switched from VHS to DVD so I highly doubt people wanted to now throw away their DVD's just to replace them with Blu-ray. It would have been a huge waste of time and money doing so (and this is coming form someone who still owns a ton of VHS tapes) 2: The Late 2000s Recession: The economy started going down the toilet around late 2007 but really felt no one felt it until 2008 when the Housing Market crash and several major banks failed. Back then, most people would not of had enough money to buy newer movies and the newest technology when it first came out. 3: The Rise of Digital Streaming: I hate to say this, but, both DVD's and Blu-ray are now just as obsolete as VHS thanks to the rise of digital streaming sites such as Netflix and Hulu. Why would someone want to buy a DVD or Blu-ray if they can stream it on Netflix or Hulu and watch it on their computer, tablet, or smart tv? I guess that's why movie rental stores such as Blockbuster and Hollywood Video have gone out of business. In my opinion, had Blu-ray been invented in the late 1990s alongside DVD, both would've competed to seen who would replace VHS and Blu-ray would have likely won the battle.
@DP-hy4vh6 жыл бұрын
Not for long. Many stores are gradually phasing out the DVD in favor of Blu-Ray. In another few years, Blu-Ray will be phased out in favor of 4K.

I've never purchased a blu-ray disc, and I used DVD right from the moment we switched from VHS up until the moment I switched to online streaming. TBH I've never really been able to see a noticeable difference between DVD and Blu-Ray anyway, so I didn't see the point in switching, and getting a more expensive reader to be able to play more expensive discs

I used to hate DVDs too when I was a kid, even though VHS was already discontinued by the time I was about 4 or 5 (2006-2007 or so), and for very similar reasons too. Apart from the fact that DVDs could be more easily damaged than VHSs (learned that the hard way) the DVD player I used the most as a kid was generally not very reliable either, especially with discs that were even the slightest scratched or smudged (for those wondering, it was the built in player on a 2004 Toshiba DVD, VCR, TV combo set, and as of now, it no longer works so I have an external DVD player hooked up to it now). In fact, true story, when I was in I think fourth grade (which was in the years 2011 and 2012), I actually wrote a paragraph about why I hated DVDs so much and preferred VHSs over them as a writing assignment.
