Etaf is one of the fresh voices on the scene. And we were immensely grateful for her and her band coming along and doing their thing.
Kuwaiti born, London based she's signed to independent Kuwaiti label 'Qasida' of which herself and her writer Aziz represent.
She opens up her set at Maqam with a تقسيمة خفيفة as she describes it with her brother and bandmate Yousef before bringing on London Based Omani guitarist Moosa Al Lawati later on for a glimpse into her upcoming debut releases.
Curated by Abdulisms and co-produced by Kunstraum, we wanted to give people a little taster of the vision we have for Maqam Books to be a space for connecting. So we put together a program for a 2 day London pop up that lay host to workshops by Afikra, an Art Exhibition, a bookshop curation, a number of independent clothing brand pop ups with a purpose built display, an Arabic calligraphy stall, Visual art installations, a live music lineup and much more. What you're watching is one act out of the music segment we curated.
Maqam مقام is an initiative to establish an independent, youth-led bookshop and community space in the heart of London. Our mission is to provide an extensive collection of high-quality, affordable Arabic language books, magazines, and journals. In addition, we will curate regular exhibitions and showcase performances by both emerging and established creatives and artists.
They were a great couple of days to remember and we were pleased to see our community show up in it's droves to support it's INDEPENDENT artists, brands, makers, breakers and innovators. We wouldn't have been able to pull something like this off without all of you and for that we are eternally grateful. Looking forward to catching up at the next one.
