Y’know what I love about how Ricky September was handled? He’s written very, *very* “Doctor-ish”. It was to the point that I wondered very briefly if maybe he was the Doctor in some kind of disguise until they were both on screen together. And in the end, Lindy treats both with the same level of disposability. It shows that the racism of this society poisons people’s brains and souls so much that in the end even “their own kind” aren’t afforded true caring or consideration. Ricky was the only one who displayed any true, honest selflessness or thought to others’ feelings, and it shows you that this society is ultimately doomed to turn on each other at the first convenience.

At first I thought he was a bad guy in disguise (maybe trying to lure people somewhere) because he was just *too good* but then I realized that no, he is just a good person (and yeah, he is very much like the doctor). And then that betrayal and the look he gives her, going "wtf, I was trying to help you!" 😢

@@NankitaBR We do not know how he would have actually reacted to the Doctor in person because racism seemed so ingrained in that society. However, he seemed to be one of the few people there with actual empathy for other people. He was also more capable of independent thought than the others. I imagine that if he survived, he would still have an issue with the Doctor being black but he would be at least smart enough to allow the Doctor to transport him to a safe planet

It's absolutely because he's black. I recommend re-watching this episode. She is just non-stop awful to the Doctor the whole time. She blocks him immediately then only listens when Ruby talks. When he pops back up she couldn't even tell he was the same black guy because they all look the same to her. She asks if he is responsible for the monsters. She is appalled that the Doctor and Ruby are in the same room. She introduces him to the group chat by saying he isn't as "stupid as he looks" and is happy that he is going to get "disciplined" for talking to them all. Just all-around awful. Wild to me how people aren't picking up on that until the end lol.

I didn't get it on the first watch because she was a bit rude to Ruby too (because she sees Ruby as a working class person, I guess), but re-watching I saw how to Ruby she's just a little bit rude but to the Doctor she is just *awful.* Like, she treats them both badly bit the levels of badly are different.

I absolutely LOVE that the first time the Doctor realizes he doesn't have white privilege anymore and that some people won't let him save them just because of how this incarnation looks is in a futuristic, social media based episode instead of a historical. RTD has guts for that, and I applaud it. When you rewatch it, the racism is present all throughout and you realize that there are no people of color in the bubble.
@ohauss
@ohauss 2 ай бұрын
It was sort of a reaction to people asking him what's going to happen if the Doctor now goes into the past being black and RTD noted why the past? Why not now - or the future. The immediate preconception is that racism only happens in the past, and he deliberately subverted that. All garnished with some criticism of living in one's own bubble and dismissing anyone from it who is "different" in some form.

Good points on the actress playing Lindey. She does a phenomenal job of selling every side of that character. Absolutely carries the premise the whole way through.

Yes, it's because The Doctor is black, the 🎵twist at the end🎶 is that Finetime is a white supremacist society. There are microagressions throughout the episode.

I feel bad that I did not realize that everyone was white until the end. Which means that a world where everyone is white does not automatically strike me as abnormal. This was an amazing episode not only for the storytelling but how it made me so strongly self-reflect afterward!

I think this is part of the meta commentary that this episode is bringing up, like how we see white people as the "default", so much so that we don't even realize that the entire cast apart from the main character are white. And how this episode links this lack of inclusion of different people on a tv show to white supremacy, because deep down that's what it is.

"Ricky september would never" I wouldn't be so sure about that... He might have spent less time in the Bubble, but the AI still wanted him just as dead as the rest. He might have been reading history, but he was reading history of fine time that was available in Finetime which was very likely to be just as racist. Maybe he might have been smart to accept the Doctors offer, and maybe he could learn to be better, but he grew up in the same environment and partied with the same people.

I like the idea Ricky is a deep cover Future doctor trying to give her a second chance in a form she would accept help from. (Not dead, just knocked out) Ricky September real name "Richard Coombes": is an anagram Bardic Hero Comes Bards manifest themselves as a different kind of hero, ones that make choices to set them apart from the martial and magical protagonists that seem to dominate fantasy lore formerly one of an ancient Celtic order of poets who recited verses about the exploits, often legendary, of their tribes.

SORA!!!! THANKS for this!!!! This episode breaks two rules of the show. First rule, established in Classic and continuing in Nu: collective racism/prejudice must be overcome for our planet to survive. Second rule, established in Nu: individual prejudice is something to be frowned on but will be overcome one day. (TEARING SOUND AS RTD RIPS UP THOSE RULES :) ) WOW....Um, gee.... Who is RTD going after? Anti-immigration movements in Europe? The Right worldwide, including in America? The Doctor Who anti-woke crowd? Everyone? Although the Jordan Peele/"Black Mirror" crowd will not be losing sleep over this, I deeply appreciate RTD's willingness to put up a very big finger at people who don't like his direction. This is very different from his first, more subtle DW take. There will be a lot of criticism of Ncuti crying *again.* But from the point of view of this American, this cry is more out of the tradition of 19th-century Frederick Douglass than a 20th-century British-created Time Lord, recreated in this century to great impact.
@JackBarrugon
@JackBarrugon 2 ай бұрын
I think RTD is going after the way online bubbles enshrine prejudice generally. In a sense the notion that prejudice must be overcome in order to survive remains, because this society isn't going to last 10 minutes in the wilderness.

They needed to touch this topic, the doctor is not a white man straight anymore they cant just ignore the fact and keep going like nothing happened, that's not realistic. They needed to portray him accordingly. I honestly LOVE the cry baby Doctor. He's feeling so much he cant keep it inside. I cry all the time too so I feel him ahahaha
