My friend kept insisting that we needed to review the OGO compost toilet, but I kept putting it off. After all, we have been getting along just fine with our sawdust toilet and it accompanying sawdust bucket and urine containers - - What did we need a new toilet for? Well let me tell ya, because this changed our camping lives.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Like I mentioned in the video, Linda and I did use a bucket and sawdust for years, so we are well aware of what the bucket toilet is like. These compost toilets are a whole lot better than that! If you're traveling by yourself then the bucket might be ok, but if you are with someone else then it's nice having a system that you can use inside without driving the other person out into the cold dark night to get away from the smell. The cost is because it's made in America and not China. People with black tanks on board especially find these to be a simpler and cleaner alternative.

Sorry I struck a nerve which was not my intention. As I am well aware having using the bucket system differently than yourself it doesn't have to smell if you had modified the way you used it. But I'm sure it's easier to justify this expensive toilet if you sponsor it and get it for free. I wonder how you would feel if you had to pay out of your pocket for it. You left that out. But to each his own.

Yeah, traveling solo has it's advantages, and disadvantages. I don't think there's anyone out there that would put up with me for an extended period of time - so "win" (?) for me! 😆 I know how bad odors can be when it's just me. I have a large Viddle Vault (gamma lidded container meant for pet food) that I transport waste from camp to disposal so I don't have to smell it any longer than absolutely necessary.

I've gotta agree. I've been subscribing since day l. I liked them as an older but still cute couple. They seemed to emphasize minimizist thinking. They were on a tight budget as most of us are. Rick you told us that on several occasions. But once the platform started gaining a following the product reviews started rolling out. Yes it helps pay the bills but....l turned off for awhile Rick when you reviewed one lithium ion battery packs after another. You're fair but it felt like the latest one was the best. For all practical purposes they're darn close. But l see several power stations laying around. So yes some luster came off the bloom. Now we're into the electric bikes. Yes neat but about $2 grand not hardly minimalist now it's a pooper for a grand! I have a 6x10x6 WeeRoll original Nomad model built using steel not aluminum. Sure l'd prefer the alum. trailer but with my retirement budget forget it...same with solar. I use 4 6V lead acid boat anchors....heck the lithium ion babies were a grand or more. Again a budget buster. I take care of my batteries but if l didn't l cud easily replace them and still afford gas. Yes l traded off first cost and threw it out into a higher operating cost...but extra gas didn't bankrupt me...even when its price soared. I couldn't predict lithium would be so.much less expensive...and ld have been home bound till the price dropped. I purchased a couple of lithium power banks to supplement but l haven't had any things l needed to put them out. So l love you two kids to bits...wish l lived closer to Montana rather than Pennsylvania but we stay virtial friends via your channel. Pls don't forget your roots.....

I've just come across your channel. I lived on a narrowboat in the UK for a decade. Our boat was built with a cassette toilet which packed up after 6 years. We researched compost toilets and we met boaters who had an Airhead marine compost toilet. We decided to purchase one and it only took 2 hours to install and hook up the fan. Ten years later the compost loo continues to work beautifully with no smell. I wanted to share a urine bottle cleaning hack. Denture tablets will remove any build up inside the bottle. Once a month drop 2 denture tablets into the emptied and rinsed out urine bottle. Fill with water not quite to the top and let it sit for an hour or so. The longer the better. Empty out, rinse and you are good to go.

Yes, indeed! The 5 gallon bucket/pine pellet system seems WAY less complicated (not to mention WAY WAY cheaper) to use than a composting toilet. I've been using one at my bedside for several years. As a Senior, I've had some urgent, middle-of-the-night times when I knew my bladder just couldn't make the walk down the hallway it in time. Unless you're slow about emptying it (I'm talking more than 3 days), yes, it will start to smell but thus far, I've had absolutely no trouble with odor or disposing the bag. As far as comfort, well, if you're simply sitting on the rim of a bucket, sure, it's not comfortable!. Just purchase one from the companies that make them with a toilet-like seat and a lid and you'll be just fine!

I use a 5 gallon bucket and plastic bag with pine shavings from the feed store. Its pet bedding. With grey pipe foam for the rim to sit on. My family uses this when things get down below freezing and we shut off our well and empty the hot water heater and drain the pipes so nothing can freeze.

I get the price shocks most but like you said, the market is small and the customer who would see the value are those who do live this lifestyle full time or most of the year. Weekenders would probably not care to spend the money and would rather use a bucket. However, those who boondock, those who enjoy not having tanks on board and those who live this life style or have fishing camps, hunting camps would probably want to invest in this toilet. Great review and I'm glad you like it! Made in the 🇺🇸 and a 5 yr warranty is awesome!

I use pool float tubes to cover the rim (cut to size) on the 5 gal bucket.. and kitty litter of any kind does wonders on odor instantly. Just have some in the bag to absorb and add some after it's used. Cover the 5 gal bucket with the handy lid until ready to dispose of. My whole family used this method while waiting for a plumber to arrive one day. I was grateful that my toilet paper plugged toilet wasn't full of you know what on top! I'm sure my plumber was too.

With a great demo like that everyone should be able to decide if this apparently well-built unit is worth the price. My concern is about the electrical components which are guaranteed for 1 year and I'm not talking about the exhaust fan, which I think would be fairly reliable and easily replaceable. I'm talking about the electric agitator that mixes the peat and poop and the sensor that tells you if the pee container is getting full. If the pee volume sensor fails you could guess when it's time to empty, but if the electric agitator fails, there doesn't seem to be a backup way of mixing the peat after each usage. If I were with the OGO company I'd make the unit with a window to monitor the pee level and I'd have a mechanical backup for the electrical mixer.

Add worms to the solid buckets; those abate coliform bacteria, & compost the solids faster. That also reduces the bulk of the solids, so, it reduces how often the solids need emptied.

As a gardener I suggest using the European Red Worms. These are far more aggressive than American ones when it comes to breaking down the solids. I use them in my gardens and in my compost pile.
@Chimonger1
@Chimonger1 Жыл бұрын
@@joycebowen8958 🤔Wonder why those are more vigorous? 🤔Where can anyone in the US get them? 🤔Would they be an invasive species? …..But yes…..red worms that live in the top several inches of dirt, are the ones most able to abate coliform bacteria that health departments worry about. That means, if your composting toilet uses red worms to help break down the solids, it composts faster, & cleaner. Ana Eddy, from “Solviva”, discovered this, & invented 2 kinds of composting toilets using them. …One handles an old, gallons/flush toilet upstairs in their farmhouse. ….The other one has a 9-bucket worm compost bin in a greenhouse, that never requires manually cleaning the buckets, because worms do it.

One huge advantage of this system is the weight advantage; lifting a cassette tank (my current toilet) that weighs 20-40 pounds and trying to pour the waste out takes a lot of coordination, not to mention bravery, is a painful process but the celebration when I don't spill or splash waste on myself when dumping is something to behold, unfortunately I have to be half drunk to build up the bravery to empty that thing...This OGO will be in my next camping rig.

This is very well presented, but it seems like a waste of money to me. If you were living in a stationary off grid situation, and planned to be composting all your waste, it might be worth it. But if you are planning on throwing away or burying the contents anyway (rather than composting it), you're better off building a box to hold your bucket and jug, installing a computer fan and hose system if you so desire, putting a comfy toilet seat on top, and then using the same peat moss, coconut coir, etc. the expensive model uses. Why pay $1150 when you can build something for a tenth of that which will work just as well?

If I go # 2, I'll tie it off, just in case I need to leave in a hurry. $6 of pellets lasts a long time. Tossing a bag occasionally vs. emptying a full bucket seems so much easier to me. I'm glad there are so many options, as everyone has their own preferences. I look at every option that is reviewed, but at the end of each, I prefer my good old fashioned bucket, which can also be used to gather firewood, haul water if needed, can double as an extra seat, can be used inside or outside, etc., no mechanical failure, easy to replace if it should ever require it, etc. So many advantages for my own personal purposes, and the least expensive option by far.

We actually got the OGO in January. It works great. I want to give you a heads up to check something though. I noticed some odor and figured it was time to empty. I was mortified to open it and there was a pile of unmixed waste on top. 😮I pushed the button and the motor was going but the agitator wasn’t moving. After emptying and cleaning I found that the screw at the bottom of the bucket had come loose allowing the gear to disengage. It was an easy fix fortunately. I applied thread locking compound to the screw, and will double check it when emptying from now on. Might be a good idea to get some spare gear parts to keep on hand just in case as well.

No fuss no muss! 7) I use a real toilet seat. Lift it off for cleaning/disposal, new bag, Snap it back in place.. 8) Finally.. if the bucket ever fowls. Replace it, they are cheap and everywhere.. I do like the idea of peat moss... I'll have to try that! For the simplicity and keeping it affordable.. I'll be sticking with the 5 gallon bucket system. With my bucket toilet cost savings over a compost toilet, I can now justify spending the money on the lockout hub conversion kit for my 4x4 Ram which will get me 2 to 3 mpg increase. Hi Rick. Thanks for a great post. I've actually watched two other posts on this product and both left me with more answers and the price seemed way more that I was willing to pay. You video answered most of my unanswered questions. Your videos are always so thorough and I can tell you've done your homework. I'm still not sure on the price. However, after your video I will absolutely look into this option. Thanks again. 🤙👣

For me at 65 with a 30 ft 2006 Coachman Camper I only paid $2000 for 3 years ago. I can't justify that price for me. I live on a lot less than that OGO costs, every month. Living in Northern Michigan I have a bathroom with a toilet. But no water hookup in winter of course. So its a plastic handle tie grocery bags and pine pellets, Soaks up urine with no odor as well as the solids. Goes out in the trash with the kitty litter also pine pellets. A box of the grocery bags cost $18 at Sam's club for 1000 bags. That I can handle. You are great at explaining the product and if it was in my budget , something I needed...I would surely buy one. Simply because of your great presentation.

Plastic bucket with plastic bag and seat. Another bucket with peat moss and a garden shovel for scooping.1) Lift seat. 2) Sprinkle one scoop peat moss. 3) drop mud 4) Sprinkle a hefty scoop on top. 5) When full of mud pull out doubled bag, tie up, throw in garbage can. (Do Not Mix Mud with golden shower). Golden shower extraction method-1) buy a cassette toilet. 2) only pee in cassette toilet. 3) When full empty in public urinal. No mix, no mess. And cheap. TP alternative? The also make a small backpacking portable bidet. Or use an old spray bottle and be sure to mark bidet on it!

I have a rechargeable Blaux bidet. I carry it in a drawstring bag to Wal-Mart or wherever. I have a problem with both arms, and I am lacking range of motion. I had a regular bidet put on my home toilet. I saved about a big box store, package a year on toilet paper. Like a 100 mega rolls.

Hi Rick/Linda...... We own the OGO compost toilet. Put it in our Toyhauler Trailer in early January 2023. Why invest so much....we are Full-Timing it. So far its great. Was an EASY install and we did vent it out the side of the trailer. And NO smells at all. When you do empty the inside bucket it is an earthy smell as you said. Nope no💩💩 smell at all. We use the coconut coir. Been great when we want to boondock for long lengths of time....especially when snowbirding it in Quartzsite. Great review Rick. And we too love the company!

Nice presentation and worth the money if you live in a travel trailer or a tiny home . Saving in water cost and water weight . No black tank to fuss over and no smell . I just don't like the idea of making a hole in the floor because I don't want any unwanted guests so I would probably would like to do it in the side of a rig.

I would think that #2 isn't going to always fall into the solids opening without missing the sides or hole completely, or in the case of loose stools, spray all over and be a total mess to clean the top inside of the unit and contaminate the urine collecter. Where are you going ti clean it at a camp ground or on the road? Simple bucket is cheap and better.

The hole is large and well positioned. Hasn’t been an issue for us in 2 months of use. A regular RV toilet was worse. After flushing there was always residue around the ball valve and you had to add more water and use a toilet brush and flush again. We find the OGO to be comfortable and the opening is well designed.

@@carolmoore1038 I use a 5 gallon bucket with a luggable loo type seat which is comfortable. I line it with a garbage bag and I put in pine pellets. There is nothing to clean. You simply remove the bag and throw it away. I’m glad that there are lots of options so people can choose what they want. But for me, a standard 5 gallon bucket with a luggable loo type seat still gets my vote. I have seen the 5 gallon buckets that are taller and not as large in diameter. I do think those can be a little bit top-heavy, but the standard 5 gallon bucket that you buy at Home Depot is very stable. Plus, I have mine inside one of those collapsible ottomans, which provides additional structure to keep it from sliding across the van. Because I am a campground camper, I found it easy just to throw away the bags. If I were Boondocking, I would use some of those BOS Bags to contain the odor. Those things really do work well. But my days of cleaning a toilet are far behind me

I’ve been using a 5 gal bucket 🪣 for a couple of years I tried the sawdust and your right it stinks and I got maggots which I don’t like sitting on and having to clean them off of the seat before using each time. I stitched to using coconut fiber I get the bricks and add water then I just add a couple of hand full to the bucket 🪣 after doing # 2 I cover with a handful of the coconut and I have no smell or bugs when the temperature gets over 90 it does smell a little but I found that if it’s hot I just leave the lid open and it never stinks it drys out in a few minutes when it’s dry there’s no smell and the only problems I’ve had was with using sawdust. I also found some bags on Amazon that don’t leak and fit in a 5 gal bucket another thing put a couple of hands full in the bucket before putting in the other wise the bag tends to sweat and start to smell
