🌎RECOMMENDATIONS:
What to do before, during and after a snow storm?
The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the "Deceptive Killers" because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. People are injured or killed in traffic accidents on icy roads, or suffer from hypothermia due to prolonged exposure to cold. Winter storms can knock out heat, power, and communications, sometimes for days at a time.
Winter storms include a variety of weather, including snow and freezing temperatures, high winds and rain storms, and even ice or heavy rain. Detailed information about winter storms can be found by contacting the National Weather Service Forecast office, local emergency management agency, or by watching local television, radio, and NOAA Weather Radio.
🌎 BEFORE:
Have your heating system checked by a professional every year. This will ensure that your system is running safely and efficiently, and this in turn will save you money.
If your heating system uses wood, clean your chimney or stove. Have your chimney flue checked for any creosote buildup and cleaned to reduce the risk of fire.
Be very careful when using alternative heating sources. Fuel kerosene heaters outside the home and keep them at least three feet from flammable objects. When using kerosene heaters, be sure to maintain ventilation to prevent the buildup of toxic fumes.
Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe breaks. If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers of newspaper and wrap the pipes with rags. Disconnect garden hoses, and turn off and drain water from pipes leading to stopcocks. This reduces the possibility of freezing in the small space of the pipe, just inside the house.
🌎 AFTER:
After the danger of a winter storm passes, or when roads are viable, look for ways to stay warm. This may include going to a shelter center or a warming center if your home is not warm.
Avoid walking outdoors on slippery or hilly surfaces until the ice has melted.
Be careful as snow and ice can melt during the day and refreeze as temperatures drop at night.
