The Green Party of England and Wales have made extraordinary gains in the last two decades, especially so in the last round of local elections. Now, as well as their one MP - Caroline Lucas, they are also the biggest party on a few councils and have a majority on Mid-Suffolk council.
To discuss why they are the only true opposition to centrism, why nuclear power is backwards and why Keir Starmer is a cynical middle manager - Aaron is joined by Deputy Leader of The Green Party, Zack Polanski.

I’m so glad Novara is FINALLY giving the Greens a platform! Labour is not left wing anymore and it annoys me how left wingers will still focus all their energy on Labour hoping that they’ll change Starmer if they just try hard enough. The Green Party is the only real left wing parliamentary party in England now.

@@waqasahmed939 Even if someone is a left-wing Labour member, ESPECIALLY in safe Labour seats, it's always a good idea to vote for a left-wing party as a protest than to spoil the ballot. Yes, Labour will still win, but when a good portion of their votes are going to left wing parties, like the Greens, that's more likely to make Starmer want to change his policy positions than voting for Labour would... voting for Labour would just make him less likely to change his mind. The Tories have no realistic chance of winning the next election (unless something monumental happens in a year). The way things are going, Starmer will win an overwhelming majority. Ideally, he'd win a minority and would have to strike a deal with a progressive party to form a coalition government, with PR as a concrete condition for him becoming Prime Minister.

@@waqasahmed939 too bad you seeing it as a protest vote. If you follow what they are about and read their policies etc., to me it is the only sane choice...always has been. You will not see the other parties change their ways soon...too entrenched like most people unfortunately.

So you are both expecting your privileged middle class lifestyles to be forgotten...? As though you both weren't members of a pro capitalist party like the Lib Dems. Not only that, but in the worst possible time, during AUSTERITY... how can he say he cares about the working class. Seems like supporting PR and being in a party that fucked the poor over for decades to come goes hand in hand...not caring about the working class is a background condition to supporting careerism opportunities which PR might make accessible for you. As Aaron noted in the video too... it's the most middle class issue anyone could devote themselves to. People are starving. But you both thought PR was worth supporting a party that was making that poverty worse in the mean time? Get out of here. Privileged enough to just focus on PR because neither of you have been hungry a day of your life I imagine. Doubt either of you would stand with us socialists at the end of the day.

I see a future with the Green Party who I share more values with, than Starmer's Labour. And I intend to get very active with them, bringing more serious political knowledge and heft to their chances. I'm not the only one. I'm very impressed by Zack Polanski's policies = Green Party policies. And I agree with Zack, once Starmer becomes PM, he isn't going to dive into the nearest telephone kiosk as Clark Kent and emerge as Socialist Superman. In fact, Starmer has already done the exact opposite of this. He posed as being a socialist in order to win the leadership contest, but as soon as he'd become leader he dived into the nearest telephone kiosk and emerged as Mr Maintain The Status Quo At All Costs.
@mawkernewek
@mawkernewek Жыл бұрын
But how do we know he's even telling the truth now? He could become something different again once in power. Probably unlikely to go back to his 10 pledges, but he might make some other hobby horse the main focus of his government.
@timelwell7002
@timelwell7002 Жыл бұрын
@@mawkernewek The direction of travel Starmer is taking seems a very predictable and establisment one - to protect the status quo at all times and at all costs. He seems singularly unconcerned with the profoucndly undemocratic legislation being put in place by Braverman, and already forced through Parliament by Patel. Electoral reform is near the bottom of his agenda - he's just not interested. The same can be said of environmental issues. He's said that he would be proud to be thought of as a 'conservative with a small "c"...' Starmer has accused the EU of 'pinching the dinner off our plates' - a phase straight from the Nigel Farage playbook. He has said repeatedly that 'Under NO circumstances will Labour EVER seek for the UK to re-join the EU' and that 'Freedom of Movement is a thing of the past.' Are you expecting Starmer to suddenly change his mind on all these statements, made so emphatically and unambiguously? I'm most certainly not. From my POV he is desperate to be accepted by Rupert Murdoch in order to be able to get into power. But if becoming PM is his only real objective, where are are his motivating principles? I would argue that naked ambition is his guiding principle, NOT a true desire to make the nation a better place for people to live. He seems to have embraced Neoliberal economic policy in its' totallity, in order to become acceptable as a credible member of the establishment. That is NOT a man who can be trusted.
@tomb129

He had a track record of lying before the leadership contest, people voted for him because he was presented as a more electable version of Corbyn but that was always a dubious prospect if you took a quick scan of his career to see what you’re voting for
@timelwell7002
@timelwell7002 Жыл бұрын
@@tomb129 Sadly, most of the Labour Party members were not aware of Starmer's mendacious nature before voting for him as leader. Once in power, he and his entourage and advisers (Evans, Akehurst, Reeves, Streeting, Mandelson, etc.) set about either sidelining the left. This has been done by: 1) Overriding preferred local electoral candidates for By-Elections or Council Elections, and instead 'parachuting in' those approved of by Starmer & Co. 2) Expelling prominent left-wing members - such as Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi (founder member of JVL), who had only just been voted onto the NEC - and earlier on Ken Loach. Starmer is being presented to the British electorate as 'Mr Boring, but Mr Clean.' A more accurate description of Starmer would be 'Mr Duplicitous, Mr Ruthless, and Mr Establishment Status Quo.'

Well done Novara. Was also worried. Great king interview. Pressing comments. Labour has lost my vote. First time I’m going to vote for greens. Slightly worried about it. But what I can focus on. The party aligns and talks about the very things that are important to me

I hope the Greens win big, but we need people to be on it, not just voting for it. I still see people hoping for a car, flying to watch concerts and moving to places requiring long commutes. I suspect we are fucked..

Great interview... Aaron was pretty agressive with Zack, and he just batted it all back, and stuck to his guns. Like many I've been searching for a different option outside the old Tory/Labour dichotomy, which values people over the system, has values that it sticks to, and that takes wealth inequality and the climate crisis seriously. After this I would totally vote Green, and have shared in a few different groups that I'm in.

@@davidhodgson3901 Insofar as you say, "hand another victory to the Toes," ...very rich in irony, because if Starmer's lot are voted in, it will effectively be a victory for the Tory Party Reserve Team..

Cooperation between far left ideologues & Tory nativist authoritarians, absolutely appalling, guess many of the same voted against the EU because it's a 'capitalist conspiracy' EU; nasty collective narcissism with right wing media support?

Important point about expense of trains: we need the subsidies given to aviation to be given to trains. Also, only well off people fly frequently for leisure and this is what is driving the expansion of aviation.

1:12:25 this is very damning of Khan. Zack is right on induced demand. The way to reduce congestion is to provide better alternatives than driving. Building roads makes driving MORE attractive vs the alternatives and so more people do it, until the roads clog up again. The Silvertown Tunnel is a disaster for emissions, for communities and for transport generally.

The energy industry is currently privatised, and this itself is a severe hurdle as energy companies are, in the main, driven by profits and shareholder dividends over and above the needs and concerns of the communities where the wind and solar farms are sited. In the Highlands of Scotland, there is little that is ‘green’ about the proliferation of wind farms in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Fuel poverty is at disproportionate levels in the Highlands, where the population in these most rural parts of the UK suffers from poor transportation, employment opportunities and associated deprivation factors. There is enormous support for a genuine green agenda in the Highlands, but the current approach is ‘all about the money’ for a few.
