Yup, she wasn't invincible either, as there were several opponent's that could beat her either because they were more cunning or just more powerful, but at no point does she ever feel weaker then when she was introduced.

@@MatthewJamesKalasky She literally took on an army of her 'peers' as well as the Dai Li which were the Earth Nations equivalent of special forces. Yeah, not only would I say she improved but they managed to create an OP character that was likable, inspiring, and you genuinely wanted to see how far she could go. If only other writers had taken note on how to portray powerful characters properly...

One thing I love about Toph is how fluidly her movements are. She's a earth bender but she moves like it's water. I think it's such a cool touch to her character in general.

Avatar: The last Airbender did something that very few shows can manage these days - they managed to make me like every character in the show except the villain. To this day, one of my favorite shows, easily.

I love how they go for strategies that SHOULD work, keeping themselves in the air to throw attacks she couldn't sense, but she still manages to detect those attacks with her hearing and counter them. It just goes to show that Toph knows her own weaknesses and has developed measures to circumvent them.

It's not exactly her hearing. Toph's seismic sense extends to all earth regardles of whether its connected to the ground, allowing her to see rocks flying at her. And it's not bending either, you could throw a rock at her with only your physical ability and she'll still catch it.

Actually, thats not it either. Toph 'sees' around her by sensing vibrations in the earth. Sort of like ground sonar. She can sense all movements around her, and if someone picks up a rock to throw at her she will see the person picking it up and throwing it. Once its in the air though, she cant see it. She predicts where the rock is based on the angle and strength of the throw

@@emancules if that were the case any rock that is first risen then propelled would hit her dead center every time. Because said rock would vanish from her vision the moment it stopped touching the ground. Then at the same time she'd be utterly defenseless against barrages because if she can't see or sense the projectile in the air she doesn't know if it's being propelled at her at full force or perhaps the bender deliberately propelled with less force to make it slower. Or sends multiple rocks at varying speeds. She would get hit. Toph can sense vibrations even through the air that's how she senses rocks flying at her despite them being first risen then propelled.

Toph really not only pioneered metal bending, but precise earth bending in general, like bolins pebble shot, all those fast attacks that dont rely on physical weight, rather terrakinetic speed.

rather than her simply being "smallest girl with the biggest punch", her biggest perk is that she was born blind and she became the ultimate earth bending powerhouse in the series by taking advantage of said disability instead with a very quirky personality to booth, small girl or grown woman only makes small difference and her bending certainly don't always need to pack a punch just to show how awesome she is, like her metal bending for example

Tbh, I feel like anyone other than DiMartino and Konietzko would have chickened out. I believe they said that they'd originally intended for Toph to be a boy, but thought it would truly inspire and add to her character by being a young girl who was blind. No one would have the courage or faith in letting a character be that complex, especially because they're uncertain of how well it would work with "demographics."

I'm so glad they decided to keep toph alive and kicking to teach Korra, after seeing toph in avatar, the development team would have definitely struggled to find anyone as entertaining to be Korea's earthbending teacher. Toph is such a great character. Don't know how they came up with her, but I'm glad they did.

The crazy part is those Earth benders weren’t weaklings, these are well experienced fighters and some were actually skilled experts and talented. They just weren’t in Toph’s league 🐐😮💨

Bumi in terms of power during ATLA, he can bend telepathically which no one else can do I believe. Toph would win if she carried on this way until her 20s I'd say. Bumi just has alot more experience.

She had to get better too. She had to learn to open up and allow the others to be able to help her when she needed it. She also had to make metal bending or she never would've escaped her captivity. Honestly she just didn't have to improve as much as the others because she had already overcome the biggest trial of her life.. being blind

One of the best parts of the show was when someone found a loophole to her ability to see through earth and trapped her in a metal cage… but instead of showing her as helpless, crying or waiting she bulldozed through it toph style and literally learned metal bending in the process and got herself out! I never respected any character more 🥹 that mental strength of her is something to aspire to..

I love how Toph is a total powerhouse, and her blindness may have actually been turned into an advantage in combat because she learned how to sense the world around her, rather than only focusing on what can be seen like so many other benders in the series. I think that that is why everyone tends to forget that she's blind. Also, the reason that she's portrayed by this massive dude in the Ember Island play is because nobody wants to admit that they got their butts handed to them by a twelve year old girl.

The introduction of Toph was the begining of Avatar's transition from a cute kids show to one of the greatest animated series of all time. She feels so essential to the gaang that it's crazy rembering she only showed up almost halfway through the show.

People really miss some ADDITIONAL aspects of her genius. She also is a master in trajectory, physics, and weight of objects. To toss a guy up in the air, renders them invisible, but she already knows where they will land based on how she tossed them. Insane

I just realized, the outfit she wears here is what she wears for most of the series, not the clothes she wears when we see her at her home later in this episode… So basically she spends most of the series running around in a pro wrestler costume.
