I've just fitted a double skin steel liner in my flue. There's no reason to do all that damage. Absolutely pointless.

There is actually, depending on the size of your firebox, you may be able to fit a liner within the existing clay flue. Most of the time you need a bigger liner which calls for some demolition. You're either lucky, or using a smaller liner than you need to save money.

@@stinkfinga4918 actually no. I've done everything to regulation and had everything signed off by building control. I've built dozens of chimneys over the decades as I'm a qualified brick layer . If you have a five inch stove pipe then to achieve an adequate draw over 10 meters the flue only has to be increased to six inches. If you make the flue too large the fire will over draw and damage the burner. As for saving money I always fit twin wall steel flue.

It’s not with a metal flue. They may be installing a new clay flue.

Depends on what type fireplace is installed also. If it an open fireplace you have to maintain the proper size flue to insure a good draw. If its a woodstove or similar product you also have to size the exhaust properly.

Sometimes, the inner diameter of the 8x8 flue tile is less than 6", so a 6" liner won't fit. Or 2 tiles were misaligned, so the steel liner wouldn't go down. I'm guessing this is a furnace flue.

Why the heck would they destroy that liner, a stainless steel flue liner with Vermiculite filler and jobs done with a great draw and easily cleaned. Edit Dec '23: But with the benefit of comments here I now understand there are many more situations that may need this weapon of a trade. I guess I was a bit "fired up" , got all "hot" about it 🥵🔥😅

Possibly not large enough. SS tubes are typically round, and if they're putting out similar flow, would have to be larger diameter.

But I have learnt a lot here on the various reasons they would do it with that weapon to start with, it's the first time I saw one of those... still learning I guess. Happy Christmas 🎄
