I always believed that driving stick shift makes a better driver, because it makes you in tune with your vehicle...👍🏼
@someotherguyy2 жыл бұрын
At the very least it gives you something to focus on, running 10+ hours can get a bit dry, if you've got some hills or tight corners i find having to cycle through a few gears helps me stay awake, auto's are dangerous, been running teams for long enough not to like them, you'd shit yourself if you knew how many drivers are half awake in trucks with cruise control rolling down the freeway
2 жыл бұрын
It's more than that I find. It forces you to be more aware of the road and your surroundings. You want to look ahead, and think ahead, to avoid having to shift down a gear or come to a stop and have to launch again. It also keeps you aware of you speed, since you're more involved in the process that got you that speed.
@OGLYASDI2 жыл бұрын
@ I totally agree with what you said, I drove school bus for over 20 years and about 16 of those years was in a stick shift….I learned exactly what my bus was capable of doing and which gear to be in for the conditions, be it either weather or traffic…I also was an instructor who made sure my trainees understood the importance of being in the right gear for the situation at hand so they would always be in control of their bus at all times. So yes, you’re right when you say it’s much more than that! 👍🏼☺️

Not hard at all dude we don’t use the clutch all you gotta do is apply pressure and ease your foot of the gas. it’s called floating the gears, if he takes to long shifting gears it won’t go to the next gear you’ll have to rev the motor to make the rpms line up with the tranny or whatever. I learnt how to drive with a 13 speed now I drive a 10 speed.

I drove a little back in the 80's, and the 13 speed Fuller Road Ranger was very popular. It takes practice, but you eventually get the hang of it. Downshifting takes some finesse, but it too is doable with time and practice. What always blew my mind was the dump truck drivers who used a two lever "Brownie" shifter. They had to use both hands, with one arm through the steering wheel. Never figured that one out....
@mattmoschkau28316 жыл бұрын

My dad had me driving a manual when I was 10. My first car was a 67 GTO. It was an automatic with a hurst dual gate shifter. Wasn’t a manual but it was fun. I’ve never driven a automatic truck. I guess I would. I’m a trucker. If it’s a truck I’ll drive it. I started on an old consolidated freight. So long ago I don’t remember it’s number of gears. Seems it was 7 it didn’t have a split. My first time down the vine I was in a 10 speed without jakes. Less than halfway down my brakes were smokin’ and my partner said “well Mark, get your foot of that pedal and start shiftin’ quick we’re goin’ for a ride.” That was a ride! I remember it was just fun. I’ve driven a lot of trucks with different transmissions. It’s been a fun drive 😊.

Driving since 2008 started with a manual transmission but it's not my fault if companies are going to automatics
@fortheloveofnoise5 жыл бұрын
My Tundra is automatic because there wasn't a manual offered. I will eventually get a second vehicle which will be some classic convertible and It will be stick. I do drive in the button press shifitong mode, I cant stand for it to auto shift as it never does it when I want it to (or any car for that matter)

You can always buy your own truck or work somewhere else. I told my boss I’ll quit if he puts me in an auto.

I can't stand the new automatics. Sure it makes it easier in city traffic, but where's the fun in that?

People who are experienced to driving and aren't really car people get tired of it
@Shakshuka695 жыл бұрын
I would get tired of it if I still had to drive the 405 but my commute is all highway now and I'm not getting another automatic until they're so automatic that I can nap on the way to work.

This is the best visual...however one that don't know would've said you only shifted 12 gears...but they need to know about the LO gear....that's what make it 13 speed! Great demonstration overall!

I work in mining quarry and drive dump trucks with this lever like thingy, if you switch it down it changes to Low, up goes High, and the trucks are XCMG with 8 speed, Low1 with High5, L2 H6, L3 H7, L4 H8, also reverse, and HOWO 371 with 10 speed L1 goes with H6, L5 with H10. I also drive MT86 but this one is simple as sedans with manual, 7speed.

Finally someone who know how to shift a 13 correctly. It drives me crazy when guy pull the shifter out of gear push the red switch or overdrive forward then put it back in gear it is not how u do it. Eaton will tell u that. Hell the sticker on the dash if it's still there will tell u this. I like how u started the video with OK u want to drive a big truck but u want an automatic that's cute. 😂😂😂. If it were not for the automatic u couldn't find any steering wheel holders at all. Hell my 24 year old nephew can't even drive a standard shift car for Fuck sake.

I have a dumb question...I've only driven a 10speed. Do you have to split 5,6,7? Or could I go 5L,6L,7L, 8L,8H?? Am I making sense?
@oldmanriding6 жыл бұрын
J Cortes if your driving a 13 you can skip gears if your light or empty I do. Once you past 8th gear you can't it just lugs to much. Hope that answers question. Thanks for watching

oldmanriding thank you sir. I started off on an automatic. It was nice in town, then it broke down and they gave me a 10speed. Took me a few days to get it down. But I fell in love with it.
@oldmanriding6 жыл бұрын
J Cortes the ten speed is pretty much the best transmission. That's basically the same as the 13 without the overdrive.

We have trucks with both. I have driven both A LOT. It doesn't make you less of a man to dive an automatic. Actually, they have some badass autos out there. It all comes down to application. A Stellar drop box truck benefits from an automatic when positioning boxes in tight quarters. In situations where many newbies drive a truck an auto will save u many a clutch brake (and clutch) in newbie city driving. It won't be long and automatics will dominate the trucking industry. The driver who bases his "manhood" on shifting is, in reality, insecure.
@compteck76 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I totally disagree..I drove stick until the injury and automatics almost like driving the car. The driver who bases his "manhood" on an automatic is the insecure 1..it is nothing to go from stick to auto, but I pity many a clutch when some "automatic" newbie gets behind even 10 speeds. And Allison, Borg, ZF and others have many a year research left until their "autos" can haul upwards of 120-160K lbs.
@AnonYmous-qg4ph6 жыл бұрын
Wolf277 you obviously don't know anything about trucks. They have automatic trans for trucks that are rated much higher than your rear diff will handle. Allison's standard TC-10 automatic truck tranny is rated for 13,000 lb-ft of output torque and 110,000 gvw. And that's just their starting point. They will build their rugged series to whatever rating spec you need. And I've noticed that truckers who drive autos never base their manhood on their tranny. Gear grinder extremists are the ones with egos.
@compteck76 жыл бұрын
You are the 1 who started bat swinging with that "remark" in your last sentence. First, why don't we try and get some of your Allison figures straight since it's obvious you can't. The TC-10 1850-110 is their top end unit, NOT their starting point, which can handle up to 600Hp input and 110.000 lbs GCW NOT GVW. GCW is gross combined weight, so NO it cannot handle heavy haul 150-160k loads. And no, they don't " have automatic trans that are rated" for lets say an Eaton D52-190P..heavy haul still needs stick! It is nothing to go from a stick to an automatic..been there done that..13s and 18s to an auto..and it was a manual auto. Yes automatics have their place, such as buses, in-city and local delivery, fire engines but just like driving your everyday mode of transport, trying to drive a stick after doing an automatic, a long learning curve. And yes, I know QUITE a bit about trucks.

Wolf277 they have rugged duty transmissions that have an unlimited torque rating...do your research
