What an incredible adventure! We are boarding the Rocky Mountaineer train on a two-day journey from Vancouver to Banff, Canada. This journey is called First Passage to the West. We are seated in a two-story train car with ridiculously comfortable seats and a glass top dome which offers 180-degree views... AND the lower level is a luxury dining car! Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining car and snacks and drinks are served throughout the day upstairs. We were told that the food would be delicious and it most definitely lived up to the hype!
The views... oh my gosh, the views! That is what this journey is all about! You can sit comfortably in your seat inside or can go outside to the viewing platform. If you enjoy nature, then this is the trip for you! Your eyes never get tired of looking out the windows. Mountain and trees and rivers and streams.. and wildlife when ou are lucky to catch it. We saw sheep in the mountains and salmon jumping in the rivers. I could go on and on... but you really have to see it for yourself! What we captured is beautiful, but what you see with your own eyes is even better!
We stop for the night in Kamloops, Canada and our luggage is magically in our hotel room when we arrive. Rocky Mountaineer takes care of every detail of your trip! You only travel during the day as this trip is all about the views. So you spend your evenings in great hotels along the way. Time for dinner and early to bed as are up at 6am to re-board the train for day two!

My husband had the opportunity to be the engineer on this train quite a few times. He was on the reverse leg of the journey from Calgary to Banff. The scenery and landscape in BC never gets old.

@@samtrak1204 sorry for the confusion. As the engineer he took the train from Calgary where it sits in the yard to Banff and lake Louise where the passengers embark then his terminal ended in Field BC where another crew would continue on the journey. Train crews are limited in the hours on the train as well as the area they work

Don't you wish you could stop for an hour or two to fish those rivers. That's the only trouble with train vs car travel. You can't just stop to fish, walk, swim. Beautiful scenery and the food looked amazing. Thanks so much for showing us this 40th anniversary coming up. May have to look into this.

VIA Rail Canada does the same route between Vancouver and Jasper in historic, spotlessly clean 1954 silver rail cars, the scenery is the same rivers shown here and similar mountain scenery as on the southern Banff route as you get towards Jasper. No luxury, but the food is good and prices are a fraction of the RM. Tour and express buses run all summer along the 300 km / 200 mile long and world-famous Icefields Parkway highway between Jasper and Banff, or you can rent a car. Calgary airport is 150 km / 90 miles from Banff with good airporter bus connections, and there are lots of small and large day trip tour operators throughout the region.

So glad you got a chance to do this trip, it is truly amazing! I have driven that route many many times, and it is beautiful. Haven't been on the train (out of my price range!) but maybe one day. This is a great way to start your train travels, it really is downhill from here on in - the regular train is nothing like this - good but not this caliber of travel. Enjoy looking forward to next video.

I know both provinces inside and out, and it surprises many people that in the Fraser River Canyon, river level averaging 500 feet above sea level, Skihist and Stein Mountains just west of Lytton reach 9660 feet and 9010 feet, a vertical rise of 9000 feet and 8500 feet, both visible from the Trans Canada Highway on the cliffs above but not the train at river level. Only Mt Robson, Mt Goodsir in Yoho Park and some peaks on the west side of the Columbia Icefield exceed this in the Rockies, but yes, there are endless extremely rugged ranges of peaks everywhere else, most averaging 5000-7000 feet above the valleys, and 9,000-11,000 feet or more above sea level. It is a uniquely Canadian thing that there is so much rivalry and even animosity between the provinces in Canada, something foreign to most international visitors.
