Safiyyah Cotton makes $7.50 an hour working at McDonald's. So how does she stretch her budget? With a lot of help from the government. Here's a look inside the life and budget of a low-wage worker.

That doesn't work. State-level politicians receive relatively low pay (not minimum wage level of course), but all that has lead to is their ranks being filled with rich businessman who can afford to do legislating as a sort of hobby and often fundraise their own campaigns (and make laws that suit the interests of themselves at the expense of the rest of us). You need publicly financed elections and a fundamental overhaul of the lobbying/legalized bribery that dominates the political process to get real change. Constitutional amendment-level overhaul because the corporatist Supreme Court justices were literally appointed _because_ of their willingness to enable/legitimize the bribery, so they'll gut most federal laws meant to change things.

This woman chooses to get pregnant with a dead beat whose in jail, and is complaining about her living situation? Sorry, you made your bed, now you gotta sleep it. And before you attack me, saying I'm a privileged white man... Listen to this. Grew up dirt poor. Had no one but my parents. Both my parents worked retail jobs at the mall. They always told me to study hard and stay in school, to stay away from drugs and make friends with the right people. I listened to EVERYTHING they told, and I'm glad I did. When I got old enough, I started working to help my parents out with bills. We couldn't afford a car, so we took the bus everywhere. I used to stay up until 3a.m doing homework and sleep about 4 hours. High school was hell for me, but I was the first in my family to graduate. Couldn't afford university, so I went to my local community college. Fell in love with Biology and decided to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse. Took me 5 - almost 6 years to complete my Associates Degree because I had to work 2 jobs just to support myself and my parents. Now, after 26 years of busting my ass, it's all paid off. Currently a Registered Nurse, making close to 70k a year. Saving money to attend university and complete my BS to further my career. Nothing was handed to me. I worked my ass off for everything. It pisses me off when people like this woman here, who makes all these shitty choices, then expect other hard working people to help them out because they're too damn lazy to get an education. I grew up with nothing. Now look at me. I started from the bottom. You make the bed you sleep in. Listen to parents. Stay in school. Don't have kids until you have a career. And don't expect people to hand you anything.

It's up to the government to increase minimum wage. In Australia, our minimum wage, for a 22 year old and older, is USD$15 if you are part-time/full time which includes paid leave, sick leave and guaranteed number of hours per week, or USD$20 if you are a casual employee. Both include a bonus 10% on whatever you earn which goes towards your retirement fund. This is all legislation. It's up to the government. Why would McDonalds want to voluntarily pay more money!? They don't gaf about their employees. McDonalds is a business. They want to earn as much profit as possible.

She also chose to have a child in what i promise you was with some complete loser. I've been there. That min wage life is no joke. This year at 22,my bf and I found out I was pregnant and knew it was the last time I'd ever work min wage jobs. I made 110 every week working full time at Planet Fitness. But I enrolled myself in a Dental Assistant course and graduated in 4 months. No dental or non related dental job wanted to hire me because I was pregnant, but I never gave up. Just 3 weeks ago when I was about to give up, the Department of Community Health called me saying they had my resume and would like for me to start asap in the Board of Pharmacy&Dentistry. I was worried cuz I was pregnant and they didn't know but it didn't phase them and at almost 8 months pregnant I got my first career ! Now I make in a week what I used to make in a month at Planet Fitness, I work in a respecful and stress free office environment&I love what I do. No one's getting worked to death and whining for hrs, we all work Mon thru Fri 8 to 5. I can't wait to be promoted and continue my education to make more money and get my degrees. I didn't want my child to struggle and I made sure to make it happen! It's not easy, but you've got to be driven! If you want a career, make it happen. My goal is to have a successful life where me and my child will never struggle again and I'm on that path. Strive for a career, min wage was never meant for adults to raise kids or survive on. Believe in yourself 😊

Everyone saying that it is for a student is primarily incorrect. The video in it's self disproves this, as it states what working minimum wage will provide 6,000 a year, and that is full time. Of course college students aren't working full time; they have school as well. Furthermore, who do you think is working weekday mornings? Clearly not college students, because that is when their classes are happening. Minimum wage jobs are for those who are not presented with the opportunities (i.e. college) that the more privileged, upper class citizens receive. The phenomenon is called a 'poverty cycle' and it has 15% of Americas trapped in it. So, the statement that minimum wage jobs are for college students is wrong, and I don't mean this comment in a confrontational way, just to inform.

She said she makes $230-$240 every TWO weeks. That’s $115-$120 per week... And $436 per month. Oh my god. I made that at my first job at a grocery store and I can attest to the fact that it’s nothing. I didn’t even have bills at the time, I just lived at home. I can’t imagine the stress of trying to support yourself and a child on this amount of pay. Our system is so broken and it breaks my heart. I hope they paid her well for this interview and I hope she and her child are doing better now. I wish we could get an update. Also social programs are a lifesaver, we need more of them in this country.

I didn't even know places gave that little of hours even at part time. At the very least she could find a job paying a little more, even $10 an hour isn't hard to find and would increase her income a lot.
