Hi Steve, Welcome to Korea. I've been following your journey by your v log, and I'm impressed by your open mind and attitude of acceping different culture:) The sticky green food you ate at the beginning of the video is "Tteok" which is Korean traditional rice cake made by sticky rice and Korean hurb. Have a nice trip in Korea. It's so funny that you know the word "Dae-frica" hahahahaha!

Fascinating! This is the first of your videos I have watched. I was totally captivated & it is so nice to be able to see places (from a not-your-average tourist-y perspective) that I know I will never see in person. These are exactly the off- the-beaten-path places that I would search out myself to experience. Very educational. Until now, all I have known about South Korea, aside from a page or two in a geography book as a kid, is from stories my father told as a Naval Officer from the war & stories my best friend from school shared from her mom as her mother was a Korean war bride. Such a bright, modern, clean & lovely place, much nicer than most farmers markets here in the Southern U.S. The people are what make it so interesting! Thank you!

The "ne" response that you hear when you greet people means "yes". Depending on the tone and the context, it can mean various things . The long "ne~" sound you hear is generally a friendly way of acknowledging your presence, or a way of accepting greetings or thanks. For example, when you say hello in Korean, they can respond with "ne~ an-nyeong haseyo". Or if you say thank you in Korean they can respond back with "ne~" to accept your thanks. You can also respond back with "ne~" if someone thanks you for making a purchase. You can also use "ne" to say yes to a question but in a short tone.

@@Steve-Owens Also, if I may add to the wonderful explanation provided above: you hear 'ye~' as well as 'ne~' which means exactly same, yes.

My hometown is DaeGu. The market is called BUNGAE (번개 시장) market, which means lightening. It used to open for a very short time at dawn, with very reasonable prices. The garlic seller told you the garlic price was 2만2000 Korean Won (22.000); it seems you understood it as 2500. Garlic is not that cheap! )

Love your videos and exploring the nation with passion mate! Here is just a little advice I would love to share. People may feel offensive when you touch their prepared products on the shelves. It doesn't matter if you are in big supermarket (like E-Mart or Home Plus) but it is not a cool thing to do in a local market. Especially fruits or fish. And as you mentioned in the video, people are much friendly without the camera but once you ask permission first, they are more than happy to welcome you especially the old generations. Hope you have wonderful time here! I have no idea how long you will stay and where to go next, but please let me know if you ever come to City called Daejeon! keep up the good work!
@Steve-Owens

Thank you. That's an peculiar observation? I have noticed the exact opposite in this market and almost all the open markets here in Korea, that the locals pick up the fruit and fish even to inspect their quality, time and time again. If you know a market where this is not so, please let me know Thank you for your thoughts..?

4:12 Mugwert, referred to as ssuk in Korean,is widely used in Korean cuisine as well as in traditional medicine. Ssuk also adds flavor and color to more contemporary desserts like ice cream, bread, rice cake. I like this. 😀 6:10 This is burdock and is used as an ingredient for side dishes. 17:31 In fact, this yellow cake is corn rice cake made from corn flour.

16:13 so nostalgic for me. We dont get to see those anymore in the cities. In the past like 20 years ago there were many mobile(on a truck) pop grain makers that would come around the restidential area like the icecream trucks in the US. The pop many kinds of grains and they all taste different and good!

The rice cake is tteok(떡), not mochi. Japanese rice cakes and Korean rice cakes are different. And history of rice cake is longer in Korea than in Japan. It is estimated that rice cakes were made in Korea 4000 years ago.
