Camera lenses are kinda like car tires, they can come in the same sizes but they all can do different things. Fuji is no different and we're going to check out their Fujifilm XF 50mm F1 lens.

@@nout4269 The Fuji 18-55 is actually a solid zoom, my favourite kit lens by far. The F2.8 on the short end is pretty useful and it holds low apertures until pretty far through the range. But my first lens was a prime because it was during the film era, and all zooms were pants unless you spent a horrendous amount of money (and even then...). Before the digital 18-55 became the defacto, the 50mm 1.8 was pretty much the lens everyone started with.

To be fair, the hair was also soft - only slightly sharper than the eyes. Plus since he was focusing with a magnified view he would have seen that it just wasn't sharp as he went back and forth trying to acquire focus on the eye which he rightly said. Then again it's a 40+ old beautiful lens so nothing much to criticize about it.

A lot of people confused about Crop Factor. 50mm on APS-C give you a comparable FOV as a 75mm on FF. Depth of Field also needs to be converted so your DOF is comparable to F/1.5 FF. However when it comes to light gathering and exposure, the lens is a true F/1. That means that at any given ISO you will be able to shoot faster shutter speeds than your usual F/1.4 FF glass. When it comes to image quality, it is true that APS-C sensors on average produce 1 more stop of total noise (or twice as much noise) than FF at any given ISO within the same technological generation. However having more noise DOES NOT effect your camera settings for exposure. STOP coupling Lens performance with Sensor Size. They are two different things, sensor sizes does not make a lens turn into a different lens. None of this matters BTW. If you want good photos, having a larger sensor and low F-Stops don't matter. What matters most is lighting and composition. Taking a photo at base ISO at night at a Round Table Pizza using the house lights with a Medium Format Camera will still produce a terrible image because overhead florescent lighting is terrible. No gear in the world will save you from a terrible looking photo. I think most people should invest in off camera strobes and lighting equipment before investing in Lenses.

F/1 sounds amazing until you realize that with the crop factor it's basically a 75mm f/1.5 so it's slower than a full frame with an f/1.4 lens. Great optics are great, but if it was a full frame f/1 lens that would be really impressive. The reason the leica looks softer is because it's meant for use with a full frame sensor. With a crop sensor camera you're zooming in on the center of the lens, magnifying any defects. The leica can let in more than a full stop more on a full frame sensored camera thus the crazy high price.
@SeanWashPhoto
@SeanWashPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
The FOV is a 75mm and the DoF is converted to an F/1.5. But the exposure is at an F/1. So it's not "slower" than a full frame F/1.4 lens since the "speed" of an aperture has to do with exposure not DoF. Now if you want to say that an APS-C has about 1-Stop more noise than FF at any given ISO, then that would be true. But that doesn't make the lens any less "slower" or any less impressive. This is a very impressive lens specs wise irregardless of sensor format.

I've been waiting for my copy of this lens for a while now. Things are a bit slow here. But between the 56 and the new 50 the biggest differences i've noticed are softer edges to the bokeh (better than the APD version without the light loss!), and barely any focus breathing which was a pleasant surprise for a Fuji where it's usually not a concern for them (and can be atrocious as a result). For thin DoF video, it looks pretty superb! It's definitely a cutting-edge lens for the XF, and it uses all of that glass well. Now someone buy me the 200mm F2, i want to do some street photography...

Wow, this is an awesome lens. Can you tell some more options in the fast lenses? I mean around a 1.2 mark would work too, as shelling USD 1500 just for going down a bit more seems a bit excessive to me, being a beginner.

@@SeanWashPhoto i mean, a full frame camera has a (about) 1.5 times larger sensor, meaning about 1.5² times more light ... so this checks out as well as about an f1.5 lens That doesn't make the lens any less impressive, it still physically is an f1.0 lens... WITH autofocus !

I just bought my first camera (canon m6 mk2) and I would honestly think the kit lens is the one that most people should start with. I could be wrong but I imagine that a zoom lens is much more beginner friendly for most people. Mine came with a 15-45mm and ill probably buy another zoom lens for distant shots before investing in a prime lens. Just an opinion from a complete noob so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Everyone in this section seems to know nothing about cameras, ever heard of shallow depth of field? f1 has a mush shallower depth of field thats why the nose and eyebrows are sharper on the f1.2 where they are closer to the focused area
@petitjeangilles
@petitjeangilles 3 жыл бұрын
i think brandon was looking at the skin under the eyes. The f1 was clearly focused there, while the f1.2 seemed to be focused on the eyebrows. At f1 / f1.2, the depth between the eye and the eyebrows is really not negligible

Couple things for everyone - That’s a full frame equivalent 75mm lens not a 50mm because it’s on an APSC camera with a 1.5 crop. Also, it’s an f1 on APSC which means it’s the same as an f1.4 on full frame.

Comparison vs Canon EOS R5 with RF 50 f/1.2 ? You could justify the cost with a followup video air/watercooling the R5, which seems to fix the overheating... and maybe vs Fujifilm GFX100 with the 80mm f/1.7 (medium format f1.7 🤯) when it releases?

It’d be interesting to see photos taken a stop or two higher, if memory serves, a lens is most sharp a step or two above fully open. That being said, I’m sure autofocus and a newer lens will still give the Fuji an advantage, but I think it’d still be cool to see.
