Translated from the Norwegian by Marjam Idriss, Paradise Rot is a visceral and sensual novel about bodies, sexuality, and temptation. A novel that feels tailor-made for me as a reader.

I watched this, then went on Google play and found the audiobook... I feel like I'm back in University in one of my writing workshop classes. The rythm and styles and imagery... I love it!! 😊

Championing the stories of unfeminine femmes. From Keiko's unwitting resistance of gender roles to the more explicit refusal to conform while still embracing or flaunting sexuality and desire, the great unfeminising is writing it's next chapter! Next all dresses shall have pockets!

Watching your review while eating an apple. I just finished it last night, and tossed about before falling asleep, not sure of the takeaway I was meant to leave with. Letting it brew, and watching your review, I'm slowly piecing it together. What I can't deny, is that it felt like a safe place where my own idiosyncrasies were welcome, but it's also so much written as "horror" romance. There's perhaps a part of me, in my own shadow, that felt comfortable and excited by this book, while the "waking" self, the one with the "critical thinking" was made to feel like he was supposed to be disgusted. I felt a longing, even an envy for Jo. But I don't earnestly want to experience what these two went through. Right?

I'm sure this book would be called called Sad Girl (or maybe Sad Woman), but Gross Woman should totally be considered a genre of fiction. 😊 Anyway it makes me so happy to hear you praising Paradise Rot! Jenny Hval has been one of my most favorite writers since I read Girls Against God (also translated by Marjam Idriss). I recently gave in to the urge to order a used copy and I'm even more excited to read it thanks to you. Novels that are sensual, sexual, and deal with temptation and bodies are my among my favorites to read. This will also 100% be my perfect novel. 😍 Oh, please read Girls Against God as well whenever you're able to. I love that novel so much. 😭

I've been wanting to read this book and your review is just the one last push that I need. You've said in your previous videos before that Frankenstein and convenience store woman is your favorite books and I totally gasped because SAME! Your review is so helpful and you always elaborate things so clearly, well done!

I just read this in the original Norwegian, and it was so fascinating. It now lies beside me on top of a box of slowly melting ice cream that will slowly be swelled out with mould and stink before I finally throw it in the bin. I am an Australian lesbian who moved to Norway. I feel like I know the places she mentions intimately; since Hval attended Melbourne university it is those tram lines that I remember, and that accent that strikes me so softly. I know Australian seaside towns, I know the places where the snow never arrives and everything turns a sad golden in the winter. Knowing that it has been translated fascinates me. So much of Hval's work plays intimately with the Norwegian language even despite the Anglo-Saxon setting. 'Jo' would be pronounced "Yo" in norwegian; the negative affirmative reply. "You haven't seen her, have you?" "Yo, I have." It is difficult to imagine this not having factored into Hval's work. As a college student, I do not have access to many novels, or reading time. But I find that this novel is like my Anti-Novel, my own story turned on its head and filled with a bile. It's an absolutely fascinating, thrilling experience.

Cool! Ive been binge watching your videos while i clean and work so i haven't really gotten the chance to comment but i really them! They got me to read sayaka murata and im really thankful for that since love her work and relate to some parts (not the incest) of it! Im never really felt human in a metaphorical way so reading that and similar works has been great! Im reading more then i have in years and now i kinda wanna dip my toes into writing too! ^-^

I read Jenny’s other book, “Girls Against God” earlier this year and really didn’t enjoy it. The best bits were the visceral, weird and gross moments between the female characters, which sounds similar to Paradise Rot! The rest was a rambling stream of philosophical consciousness which I found really annoying. After telling myself I wouldn’t read another Hval novel, you’ve convinced me to pick this up! It sounds like a book full of the parts of Girls Against God that I did really love. Thank you!! ❤️
