As you might remember, I work building digital asset management systems for large media companies. From NASA to corporate media departments, and to the three letter networks and their local stations. From time to time I have to look at what’s on those systems and being a geek, I look at the EXIF data. Some shooters use the absolute latest price is no object gear while others are obviously using an older body and glass that they like and are familiar with. They all capture great images….so like you say, it’s the eye, not the gear. Ok, us amateurs can be helped by the gear, and I’ve benefited from spray and pray as much as anyone, but looking at those pictures and the gear that has captured them reminds me that I don’t need to spend a fortune. I need to spend more time practicing and thinking about what I’m doing.

Its so interesting how the work people make comes to be. Some people use the absolute most rudimentary equipment and create banger after banger of images. Some need the tech but also create unusually good work. Practice practice practice is what I was taught as a kid (the three Ps) and I think thats definitely the key. Thanks for the response and thanks for watching!

Hi Thomas. Thank you for this excellent video on the Nikon Z7. As a Z7/Z8 landscape, product and occasional wildlife photographer, I am quite pleased with the sharpness and detail I get from both the Z7 and Z8, and totally agree with your points about image qualityfrom the Z7 sensor! I also agree that the Z8 is a bit "chunkier" than the Z7 though much faster in most aspects. For this reason I use the Z8 for wildlife, product, and landscape work, whereas the Z7 would be used for landscape and product photography only. Regarding your comments on printing large, and comparing to medium format, not having used MF camera systems, I can only surmise that the larger sensor in MF would show greater sharpness and detail when printing quite large say, 30" x 40" and up, based on the fact that there is less enlargemnt required from the larger sensor. Thanks again!

That sounds reasonable. Larger sensor will always have higher resolution even at the same megapixels because of the dynamic range and color accuracy brought with the larger pixels. The 100 MP sensors though are actually holding pixels that are about the same as the Z7 in size so other than resolution, there is no real increase in dynamic range or color fidelity over the Z7 or Z8 I believe. Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comment. Definitely helpful Steve.

@@ThomasPetzwinkler Interesting comments regarding dynamic range and color fidelity, Thomas! As I'm regrettably a bit colorblind, I likely would have difficulty analyzing color differences between the formats anyway. What I "can" discern is sharpness and detail, which is the main reason I'd even consider MF over FF, only when printing quite large. That said, for social media purposes, I imagine that even APS-C and M4/3 would suffice. Thanks again sir!

Nice video, I also own the Nikon Z7 and XT5 along with GFX 100s. I agree that the Z7 and lenses are top notch, the Z lenses are probably as good as it gets. However, the GFX 100s is a step up and has more dynamic range, maybe a stop more? The ability to lift shadows is crazy with little noise. This in no way diminishes the quality of the Z7, it is top shelf and a stellar landscape option that can be had at bargain prices. Thanks again, keep it up, Rod

It is a great system for sure! The lens selection certainly makes it worth while. I only have the ZF for my fast camera and use a different system for fine art landscape work.

This is something I definitely love about it. I'm about to have my cleaned repaired (I have a mode knob thats sticking from me getting sand in it) and getting everything checked. If it needs a shutter, I will gladly put one in. I don't plan on ever getting rid of this camera. That coming from a guy that buys and sells a lot of stuff. LOL

I Loved my Z7 but in Wild Life I needed better AF so traded it in Nov and got a huge BlackFriday deal in S Africa and got my last ever camera I will ever need the Z8 .. Yes the Z7 cant be beat for Landscapes and Milky Way. The 45 M Pixel BSI Stacked Sensor is the Best Sensor Nikon has ever used >> its found in the Z8 and Z9 which also have much better Grip than my old Z7 ..my Z8 fits my hand like the old D850 did ..perfect in the hand. The Z8 is not heavy especially when weighted with the 180-600 .. its also great with the S 70-200 and the 24-120. Steve Perry a Top Wild Life Photographer and Trainer only Shoots in 20 FPS and for FAST birds in Flight thats what I do too . But yes a Big Male Lion walking towards me here in Africa I have it on Low Speed 5-8 FPS

You get an extra thumbs up from me for the 'tape under the LCD screed hack'. It's bugged me for years that when I have my X-H1 on an L-plate I can't get the screen to flip out for portait orientation! Thanks. Now where did I put the gaffer tape?

Thomas, when I first saw your photo of the old white-washed house, I easily flashed back to a time when the house was new and in the summertime, a woman was sweeping off the front door step while overseeing her children playing in the yard. All this went thru my mind in a split second as I looked at this old house, which I think you captured so lovingly and beautifully. And I loved that snowy scene with the little bird sitting in the corner of the foreground. Of course, with me, birds make every shot better. haha Nice approach to your photography where you set out with no agenda but creating beautiful shots. Keep it up!

June, that is a fantastic sentiment and a wonderful vision of that old house. I appreciate your praise for sure. That bird scene was a lucky catch. I wasn't even sure if it came out until I was finally able to check it on the computer. I got one with a group of birds eating together in the same way but I didn't think that one had the same impact as this one. Thank you fro stopping in as always. I look forward to your thoughts!

Good stuff. Z7 was my first trip into mirrorless so I had some real learning curves with that camera (especially lens changes and dust spots) but I look back at how good it really was. Can't agree more that you just need to get in the car and go. Not everything needs a plan. Excellent images. Cheers.

Agree completely with your take on the Z7, I had the Z7 like yourself just when it came out, I then sold it and went for the 7II, great camera, fantastic sensor. I did jump to fast and get the Z8, loved the ergonomics, a little like my D850, but it is still quite hefty when you add a few lenses for hiking. I am really looking forward to the imminent Z7III, which is probably what I should have waited for, the Z8 although a superb camera was overkill for mainly Landscape Photography.

I have considered switching to the Z7 II but just can never justify the cost over what I gain over the Z7. I am holding out for the Z7 III. That is of course as long as I don't get converted to the Z8 while I have it in a couple of week. Thanks for watching!

I think you will love the Z8, Thomas, it is just as I mentioned almost as big and heavy as the D850, probably one of the reasons we went to Mirrorless in the first place was the compactness but still with the high res sensor, if they get it right the Z7III could be spectacular.@@ThomasPetzwinkler

I want to buy a second Body to go with my Z8. I am torn between the ZF and a used Z7II (which is cheaper). I used to own a Fuji T5, so I am actually thinking about the Z7II but the ZF is quicker and I am foremost a street shooter. But I do not need lightening speed.
@ThomasPetzwinkler
@ThomasPetzwinkler 6 ай бұрын
Well, I have the Z7 and the Zf. If you are interested in street shooting, I know the Zf is quicker than the Z7II and I also know the Z7II is quicker than my Z7... However, I think if you don't need the resolution, you will find the Zf provides a lot of camera for the 2k it costs. The Z7II is more expensive and its a fantastic camera, its smaller, it's lighter, it has more available controls to use and it's higher resolution. The Zf is superior in functioning in all ways but to what extent? I'm not sure, not having owned a Z7II. I don't think you can go wrong with either but if performance is what you need, the Zf is the one between these two, if resolution is king, then the Z7II. THat's really what I think it comes down to.

i have the Z8 Z6ii Z6 Z50 and about a dozen or so dslrs ..... i really enjoy the z6ii and i'm trying to get used to the z8 (truthfully it is overkill with way too many functions needed for me) -- I've decided to stop buying bodies and put my $'s into glass and more photo outings. i am glad I stumbled upon this channel with some great advice and your delivery is awesome!

Great Video. Question - If you were using the Z7 for a natural light portrait & wanted to retain a nice clean image, what would be the ISO value you would not want to exceed? (I currently shoot natural light portraits with D3s and Z6, but I save my D3x for studio strobe - where it looks great.)
@ThomasPetzwinkler
@ThomasPetzwinkler 7 ай бұрын
Well, thats a tough question as there are some variables. Ill do my best to answer it though. First variable is what does clean mean to you? I feel like 1600 is very clean still and 3200 is totally usable. Also, you can use the AI noise reduction in Lightroom to clean the image up quite a bit. I do shoot portraits at 3200 as well as some landscape work. Then I either lean in to having some grain or I use AI removal tools to clean them up. Regardless, I think 1600 is very clean and 3200 is very usable. I had the Z6 from launch as well and only sold it 6 months ago but I can tell you that the Z7 is literally only about a half stop worse as ISO goes so sticking to your normal rules should apply (mostly). Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks Thomas - I'm curious to try a 45mp camera and since I have modest portrait shooter requirements, a used Z7 is probably the cheapest way to do it. 😊@@ThomasPetzwinkler

Hi Thomas. I'm in the deep south, so I'm curious how you keep your camera equipment from fogging up when you go from house to car, and from car to tripod?
@ThomasPetzwinkler
@ThomasPetzwinkler 7 ай бұрын
The only way I know of is to allow the camera to come up to humidity slowly. You'll find all manner of things people do but I'm not sure any of it really works. If you are having these problems in the cold, an antifoam lens heater can help on that front but I have never used one. Some people put hand warming doodads on their lenses with rubber bands too. LOL anyway, if you find something that works let me know. I live in Maine on the coast and find the same issues. I use a dry cabinet for storage but going out on wet cold days can be a chore.

Is the zf camera just as superior to this z7?
@ThomasPetzwinkler
@ThomasPetzwinkler 6 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say its superior. Its really what you need. The Zf is very fast to focus and has good tracking and speed. The Z7/Z7 II is the king of image quality. Its not the fastest, but it definitely is the best image quality in the Nikon lineup. The Z7 II is quite speedy as well. No, its not the new generation that the Zf is based on so if you need high speed autofocus and tracking its hard to beat for the price. If you get the Z8, you pay in size and weight but you get the best of both worlds.
